Numbers 31:23 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 The Lord spoke to Moses and said,
2 "Moses, tell the Israelites this: 'Go and attack the Midianites, and do to them what they did to you.' After that, Moses, you will die."
3 So Moses spoke to the people. He said, "Choose some of your men to be soldiers. The Lord will use these men to do to the Midianites what they did to you.
4 Choose 1000 men from each of the tribes of Israel.
5 There will be a total of 12,000 soldiers from the tribes of Israel."
6 Moses sent these 12,000 men to war. He sent Phineas son of Eleazar with them as the priest. Phineas took the holy things and the horns and trumpets with him.
7 The Israelites fought the Midianites as the Lord had commanded. They killed all of the Midianite men.
8 Among the people who they killed were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with a sword.
9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and children as prisoners. They also took all their sheep, cattle, and other things.
10 Then they burned all their towns and villages.
11 They took all the people and animals
12 and brought them to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the other Israelites. They brought all of the things they took in war to the camp of Israel. The Israelites were camped in the Jordan Valley in Moab, on the east side of the Jordan River across from Jericho.
13 Then Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the people went out of the camp to meet with the soldiers.
14 Moses was very angry with the leaders of the army, the commanders of 1000 men, and the commanders of 100 men, who came back from the war.
15 Moses said to them, "Why did you let the women live?
16 These are the women who listened to Balaam and caused the men of Israel to turn away from the Lord that time at Peor. The disease will come to the Lord's people again.
17 Now, kill all the Midianite boys, and kill all the Midianite women who have had sexual relations with a man.
18 You can let all the young girls live—but only if they never had sexual relations with any man.
19 And then, all you men who killed other people must stay outside the camp for seven days. You must stay outside the camp even if you just touched a dead body. On the third day you and your prisoners must make yourselves pure. You must do the same thing again on the seventh day.
20 You must wash all of your clothes. You must wash anything made with leather, wool, or wood. You must purify yourselves."
21 Then Eleazar the priest spoke to the soldiers. He said, "These are the rules that the Lord gave to Moses for soldiers coming back from war.
22 You must put gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, or lead into the fire and then wash these things with the special water to make them pure. If something can be put in the fire, you must put it in fire to purify it. If things cannot be put in fire, you must still wash them with the special water.

24 On the seventh day you must wash all of your clothes. Then you will be pure. After that you can come into camp."
25 Then the Lord said to Moses,
26 "You, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders should count all of the prisoners, animals, and everything the soldiers took in war.
27 Then divide these things between the soldiers who went to war and the rest of the Israelites.
28 Take part of these things from the soldiers who went to war. That part will belong to the Lord. The Lord's share is one from every 500 items. This includes people, cattle, donkeys, and sheep.
29 Take that share from the soldiers' half of the things they took in war. Then give these things to Eleazar the priest. That part will belong to the Lord.
30 And then, from the people's half, take one thing for every 50 items. This includes people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or any other animal. Give that share to the Levites, because they take care of the Lord's Holy Tent. "
31 So Moses and Eleazar did what the Lord commanded Moses.
32 The soldiers had taken 675,000 sheep,
33 72,000 cattle,
34 61,000 donkeys,
35 and 32,000 women. (These are only the women who had not had sexual relations with any man.)
36 The soldiers who went to war got 337,500 sheep.
37 They gave 675 sheep to the Lord.
38 The soldiers got 36,000 cattle. They gave 72 cattle to the Lord.
39 The soldiers got 30,500 donkeys. They gave 61 donkeys to the Lord.
40 The soldiers got 16,000 women. They gave 32 women to the Lord.
41 Moses gave all of these gifts for the Lord to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord had commanded him.
42 Then Moses counted the people's half. This was their share that Moses had taken from the soldiers who had gone to war.
43 The people got 337,500 sheep,
44 36,000 cattle,
45 30,500 donkeys,
46 and 16,000 women.
47 For every 50 items, Moses took one thing for the Lord. This included the animals and the people. Then he gave them to the Levites because they took care of the Lord's Holy Tent. Moses did this as the Lord commanded.
48 Then the leaders of the army (the leaders over 1000 men and the leaders over 100 men) came to Moses.
49 They told Moses, "We, your servants, have counted our soldiers. We have not missed any of them.
50 So we are bringing the Lord's gift from every soldier. We are bringing things that are made of gold—armbands, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces. This gift to the Lord is to make us pure."
51 So Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted all these gold items from them.
52 The gold that the commanders and captains gave to the Lord weighed about 424 pounds.
53 The soldiers kept the rest of their share of the things they took in war.
54 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the commanders and captains and then put that gold in the Meeting Tent. This present was a memorial before the Lord for the Israelites.

2 Avenge H5358 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 of the Midianites H4084 : afterward H310 ADV shalt thou be gathered H622 unto H413 PREP thy people H5971 .
3 And Moses H4872 spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Arm H2502 some H376 NMP of yourselves H854 unto the war H6635 , and let them go H1961 against H5921 PREP the Midianites H4080 , and avenge H5414 L-VQFC the LORD H3068 EDS of Midian H4080 .
4 Of every tribe a thousand H505 W-BMS , throughout all H3605 the tribes H4294 of Israel H3478 , shall ye send H7971 to the war H6635 .
5 So there were delivered H4560 out of the thousands H505 of Israel H3478 , a thousand H505 W-BMS of every tribe H4294 , twelve H8147 thousand H505 W-BMS armed H2502 for war H6635 .
6 And Moses H4872 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS them to the war H6635 , a thousand H505 W-BMS of every tribe H4294 them , and Phinehas H6372 the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , to the war H6635 , with the holy H6944 instruments H3627 , and the trumpets H2689 to blow H8643 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS .
7 And they warred H6633 against H5921 PREP the Midianites H4080 , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 ; and they slew H2026 all H3605 NMS the males H2145 .
8 And they slew H2026 the kings H4428 CMP of Midian H4080 , beside H5921 PREP the rest of them that were slain H2491 ; namely , Evi H189 , and Rekem H7552 , and Zur H6698 , and Hur H2354 , and Reba H7254 , five H2568 kings H4428 CMP of Midian H4080 : Balaam H1109 also the son H1121 of Beor H1160 they slew H2026 with the sword H2719 .
9 And the children H1121 CMP of Israel H3478 took all the women H802 GFP of Midian H4080 captives H7617 , and their little ones H2945 , and took the spoil H962 of all H3605 NMS their cattle H929 , and all H3605 NMS their flocks H4735 , and all H3605 NMS their goods H2428 .
10 And they burnt H8313 all H3605 NMS their cities H5892 wherein they dwelt H4186 , and all H3605 NMS their goodly castles H2918 , with fire H784 .
11 And they took H3947 W-VQY3MP all H3605 NMS the spoil H7998 , and all H3605 NMS the prey H4455 , both of men H120 and of beasts H929 .
12 And they brought H935 the captives H7628 , and the prey H4455 , and the spoil H7998 , unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and unto H413 PREP the congregation H5712 CFS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 at H413 PREP the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 , which H834 RPRO are by H5921 PREP Jordan H3383 LFS near Jericho H3405 .
13 And Moses H4872 , and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and all H3605 W-CMS the princes H5387 of the congregation H5712 , went forth H3318 W-VQY3MP to meet H7125 them without H413 PREP the camp H4264 .
14 And Moses H4872 was wroth H7107 with H5921 PREP the officers H6485 of the host H2428 , with the captains H8269 CMP over thousands H505 , and captains H8269 over hundreds H3967 , which came H935 from the battle H6635 .
15 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Have ye saved all the women alive H2421 ?
16 Behold H2005 IJEC , these H2007 PPRO-3FP caused H1961 VQQ3MP the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 , through the counsel H1697 of Balaam H1109 , to commit H4560 trespass H4604 against the LORD H3068 in H5921 PREP the matter H1697 CMS of Peor H6465 , and there was H1961 W-VQY3FS a plague H4046 among the congregation H5712 B-CFS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
17 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore kill H2026 every H3605 CMS male H2145 NMS among the little ones H2945 , and kill H2026 every H3605 W-CMS woman H802 NFS that hath known H3045 man H376 NMS by lying H4904 with him H2145 NMS .
18 But all H3605 W-CMS the women H802 children H2945 , that H834 RPRO have not H3808 NADV known H3045 VQQ3MP a man H2145 NMS by lying H4904 with him , keep alive H2421 for yourselves .
19 And do ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP abide H2583 without H2351 the camp H4264 seven H7651 RMS days H3117 NMP : whosoever H3605 NMS hath killed H2026 VQPMS any person H5315 GFS , and whosoever H3605 NMS hath touched H5060 any slain H2491 , purify H2398 both yourselves H859 PPRO-2MS and your captives H7628 on the third H7992 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , and on the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 .
20 And purify H2398 all H3605 W-CMS your raiment H899 , and all H3605 W-CMS that is made H3627 CMS of skins H5785 NMS , and all H3605 W-CMS work H4639 M-CMS of goats\' H5795 hair , and all H3605 W-CMS things H3627 CMS made of wood H6086 NMS .
21 And Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the men H376 of war H6635 which went H935 to the battle H4421 , This H2063 DPRO is the ordinance H2708 of the law H8451 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 ;
22 Only H389 ADV the gold H2091 , and the silver H3701 , the brass H5178 , the iron H1270 , the tin H913 , and the lead H5777 ,
23 Every H3605 NMS thing H1697 VQPMS that H834 RPRO may abide H935 VQY3MS the fire H784 , ye shall make it go H5674 through the fire H784 , and it shall be clean H2891 : nevertheless H389 ADV it shall be purified H2398 with the water H4325 of separation H5079 : and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO abideth H935 VQY3MS not H3808 ADV the fire H784 ye shall make go H5674 through the water H4325 .
24 And ye shall wash H3526 your clothes H899 on the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , and ye shall be clean H2891 , and afterward H310 W-ADV ye shall come H935 into H413 PREP the camp H4264 .
25 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS ,
26 Take H5375 VQI2MS the sum H7218 NMS of the prey H4455 that was taken H7628 , both of man H120 and of beast H929 WB-NFS , thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and the chief H7218 fathers H1 of the congregation H5712 :
27 And divide H2673 the prey H4455 into two parts ; between H996 PREP them that took H8610 the war H4421 upon them , who went out H3318 to battle H6635 , and between H996 PREP all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 :
28 And levy H7311 a tribute H4371 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS of the men H376 CMP of war H4421 which went out H3318 to battle H6635 : one H259 MMS soul H5315 GFS of five H2568 hundred H3967 , both of H4480 PREP the persons H120 D-NMS , and of H4480 PREP the beefs H1241 D-NMS , and of H4480 PREP the asses H2543 , and of H4480 PREP the sheep H6629 :
29 Take H3947 it of their half H4276 , and give H5414 it unto Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , for a heave offering H8641 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
30 And of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 \'s half H4276 , thou shalt take H3947 VQY2MS one H259 MMS portion H270 of H4480 PREP fifty H2572 , of H4480 PREP the persons H120 D-NMS , of H4480 PREP the beefs H1241 D-NMS , of H4480 PREP the asses H2543 , and of H4480 PREP the flocks H6629 , of all manner H3605 M-CMS of beasts H929 D-NFS , and give H5414 them unto the Levites H3881 , which keep H8104 the charge H4931 of the tabernacle H4908 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
31 And Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 did H6213 W-VQY3MS as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
32 And the booty H4455 , being the rest H3499 of the prey H957 which H834 RPRO the men H5971 NMS of war H6635 had caught H962 , was H1961 W-VQY3MS six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS and seventy H7657 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS and five H2568 thousand H505 sheep H6629 NMS ,
33 And threescore and twelve H8147 ONUM thousand H505 MMS beefs H1241 W-NMS ,
34 And threescore H8346 W-MMP and one H259 MMS thousand H505 MMS asses H2543 W-NMP ,

36 And the half H4275 , which was the portion H2506 CMS of them that went out H3318 to war H6635 , was H1961 W-VQY3FS in number H4557 CMS three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS and seven H7651 W-BMS and thirty H7970 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS and five H2568 W-BFS hundred H3967 sheep H6629 :
37 And the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s tribute H4371 of H4480 PREP the sheep H6629 was H1961 W-VQY3MS six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 BFP and threescore and fifteen H2568 MFS .
38 And the beefs H1241 were thirty H7970 W-MMP and six H8337 thousand H505 MMS ; of which the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s tribute H4371 was threescore and twelve H8147 ONUM .
39 And the asses H2543 W-NMP were thirty H7970 MMP thousand H505 W-BMS and five H2568 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP ; of which the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s tribute H4371 was threescore H8346 and one H259 MMS .
40 And the persons H5315 W-GFS were sixteen H8337 thousand H505 MMS ; of which the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s tribute H4371 was thirty H7970 W-MMP and two H8147 ONUM persons H5315 W-GFS .
41 And Moses H4872 gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS the tribute H4371 , which was the LORD H3068 EDS \'s heave offering H8641 , unto Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
42 And of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 \'s half H4276 , which H834 RPRO Moses H4872 divided H2673 from H4480 PREP the men H376 D-NMP that warred H6633 ,
43 (Now the half H4275 that pertained unto the congregation H5712 was H1961 W-VQY3FS three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS and thirty H7970 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS and seven H7651 RMS thousand H505 MMP and five H2568 W-BFS hundred H3967 sheep H6629 ,
44 And thirty H7970 W-MMP and six H8337 thousand H505 MMS beefs H1241 W-NMS ,
45 And thirty H7970 MMP thousand H505 W-BMS asses H2543 W-NMP and five H2568 W-BFS hundred H3967 ,
46 And sixteen H8337 thousand H505 MMS persons H5315 W-GFS ; )
47 Even of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 \'s half H4276 , Moses H4872 took H3947 W-VQY3MS one H259 MMS portion H270 of H4480 PREP fifty H2572 , both of H4480 PREP man H120 D-NMS and of H4480 PREP beast H929 D-NFS , and gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS them unto the Levites H3881 , which kept H8104 the charge H4931 of the tabernacle H4908 of the LORD H3068 EDS ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
48 And the officers H6485 which H834 RPRO were over thousands H505 of the host H6635 , the captains H8269 CMP of thousands H505 , and captains H8269 of hundreds H3967 , came near H7126 unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 :
49 And they said H559 unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Thy servants H5650 have taken H5375 the sum H7218 NMS of the men H376 CMP of war H4421 which H834 RPRO are under our charge H3027 , and there lacketh H6485 not H3808 W-NPAR one man H376 NMS of H4480 M-PREP-3MS us .
50 We have therefore brought H7126 an oblation H7133 for the LORD H3068 EDS , what H834 RPRO every man H376 NMS hath gotten H4672 VQPMS , of jewels H3627 of gold H2091 NMS , chains H685 , and bracelets H6781 , rings H2885 , earrings H5694 , and tablets H3558 , to make an atonement H3722 for H5921 PREP our souls H5315 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
51 And Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 took H3947 W-VQY3MS the gold H2091 of them , even all H3605 NMS wrought H4639 jewels H3627 CMS .
52 And all H3605 NMS the gold H2091 of the offering H8641 that H834 RPRO they offered up H7311 to the LORD H3068 L-EDS , of the captains H8269 CMP of thousands H505 W-BMS , and of the captains H8269 CMP of hundreds H3967 BFP , was H1961 W-VQY3MS sixteen H8337 thousand H505 seven H7651 hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 W-MMP shekels H8255 .
53 ( For the men H376 NMS of war H6635 had taken spoil H962 , every man H376 NMS for himself . )
54 And Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 took H3947 W-VQY3MS the gold H2091 of the captains H8269 CMP of thousands H505 and of hundreds H3967 , and brought H935 it into H413 PREP the tabernacle H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , for a memorial H2146 for the children H1121 of Israel H3478 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
