Genesis 24:1 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Abraham lived to be a very old man. The Lord blessed him and everything he did.
2 Abraham's oldest servant was in charge of everything he owned. Abraham called that servant to him and said, "Put your hand under my leg.
3 Now I want you to make a promise to me. Promise to me before the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan. We live among these people, but don't let him marry a Canaanite girl.
4 Go back to my country, to my own people, to find a wife for my son Isaac. Bring her here to him."
5 The servant said to him, "Maybe this woman will not want to come back with me to this land. If that happens, should I take your son with me to your homeland?"
6 Abraham said to him, "No, don't take my son to that place.
7 The Lord, the God of heaven, brought me from my homeland to this place. That place was the home of my father and the home of my family, but he promised that this new land would belong to my family. May the Lord send his angel before you so that you can choose a wife for my son.
8 If the girl refuses to come with you, you will be free from this promise. But you must not take my son back to that place."
9 So the servant put his hand under his master's leg and made the promise.
10 The servant took ten of Abraham's camels and left that place. The servant carried with him many different kinds of beautiful gifts. He went to Mesopotamia, to Nahor's city.
11 In the evening, when the women come out to get water, he went to the water well outside the city. He made the camels kneel down at the well.
12 The servant said, "Lord, you are the God of my master Abraham. Allow me to find a wife for his son today. Please show this kindness to my master Abraham.
13 Here I am, standing by this well of water, and the young women from the city are coming out to get water.
14 I am waiting for a special sign to know which is the right one for Isaac. This is the special sign: I will say to the girl, 'Please put your jar down so that I can drink.' I will know that she is the right one if she says, 'Drink, and I will also give water to your camels.' If that happens, it will be proof that she is the right one for Isaac and that you have shown kindness to my master."
15 Before the servant finished praying, a young woman named Rebekah came to the well. She was the daughter of Bethuel. (Bethuel was the son of Milcah and Nahor, Abraham's brother.) Rebekah came to the well with her water jar on her shoulder.
16 She was very pretty. She was a virgin; no man had ever had sexual relations with her. She went down to the well and filled her jar.
17 Then the servant ran to her and said, "Please give me a little water to drink from your jar."
18 Rebekah quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and gave him a drink. She said, "Drink this, sir."
19 As soon as she finished giving him something to drink, Rebekah said, "I will also pour some water for your camels."
20 So Rebekah quickly poured all the water from her jar into the drinking trough for the camels. Then she ran to the well to get more water, and she gave water to all the camels.
21 The servant quietly watched her. He wanted to be sure that the Lord had given him an answer and had made his trip successful.
22 After the camels finished drinking, he gave Rebekah a gold ring that weighed ounce. He also gave her two gold arm bracelets that weighed 2 ounces each.
23 The servant asked, "Who is your father? And is there a place in your father's house for me and my men to sleep?"
24 Rebekah answered, "My father is Bethuel, the son of Milcah and Nahor."
25 Then she said, "Yes, we have straw and other food for your camels and a place for you to sleep."
26 The servant bowed and worshiped the Lord.
27 He said, "Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham. The Lord has been kind and loyal to him by leading me to his own people."
28 Then Rebekah ran and told her family about all these things.
29 She had a brother named Laban. She told him what the man had said to her. Laban was listening to her. And when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's arms, he ran out to the well. There the man was, standing by the camels at the well.
30 vnumber="30">
31 Laban said, "Sir, you are welcome to come in! You don't have to stand outside here. I have prepared a room for you to sleep in and a place for your camels."
32 So Abraham's servant went into the house. Laban unloaded his camels and gave them straw and feed. Then he gave Abraham's servant water so that he and the men with him could wash their feet.
33 Then Laban gave him food to eat, but the servant refused to eat. He said, "I will not eat until I have told you why I came." So Laban said, "Then tell us."
34 The servant said, "I am Abraham's servant.
35 The Lord has greatly blessed my master in everything. My master has become a great man. The Lord has given him many flocks of sheep and herds of cattle. He has much silver and gold and many servants. He has many camels and donkeys.
36 Sarah was my master's wife. When she was very old, she gave birth to a son, and my master has given everything he owns to that son.
37 My master forced me to make a promise to him. He said to me, 'You must not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan. We live among these people, but I don't want him to marry one of the Canaanite girls.
38 So you must promise to go to my father's country. Go to my family and choose a wife for my son.'
39 I said to my master, 'Maybe the woman will not come back to this place with me.'
40 But my master said to me, 'I serve the Lord, and he will send his angel with you and help you. You will find a wife for my son among my people there.
41 But if you go to my father's country, and they refuse to give you a wife for my son, you will be free from this promise.'
42 "Today I came to this well and said, 'Lord, God of my master Abraham, please make my trip successful.
43 I will stand by this well and wait for a young woman to come to get water. Then I will say, "Please give me water from your jar to drink."
44 The right woman will answer in a special way. She will say, "Drink this water, and I will also get water for your camels." That way I will know that she is the one the Lord has chosen for my master's son.'
45 "Before I finished praying, Rebekah came out to the well to get water. She had her water jar on her shoulder as she went to get water from the well. I asked her to give me some water.
46 She quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and poured me some water. Then she said, 'Drink this, and I'll get some water for your camels.' So I drank the water, and she gave water to my camels.
47 Then I asked her, 'Who is your father?' She answered, 'My father is Bethuel the son of Milcah and Nahor.' Then I gave her the ring and bracelets for her arms.
48 I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham. I thanked him for leading me straight to the granddaughter of my master's brother.
49 Now, tell me, will you be kind and loyal to my master and give him your daughter? Or will you refuse to give her to him? Tell me so that I will know what I should do."
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, "We see that this is from the Lord, so there is nothing we can say to change it.
51 Here is Rebekah. Take her and go. Let her marry your master's son. This is what the Lord wants."
52 When Abraham's servant heard this, he bowed to the ground before the Lord.
53 Then he gave Rebekah the gifts he brought. He gave her beautiful clothes and gold and silver jewelry. He also gave expensive gifts to her mother and brother.
54 Then he and his men had something to eat and drink, and they spent the night there. Early the next morning they got up and the servant said, "Now we must go back to my master."
55 Rebekah's mother and her brother said, "Let Rebekah stay with us for a short time. Let her stay with us ten days. After that she can go."
56 But the servant said to them, "Don't make me wait. The Lord has made my trip successful. Now let me go back to my master."
57 Rebekah's brother and mother said, "We will call Rebekah and ask her what she wants to do."
58 They called her and asked her, "Do you want to go with this man now?" Rebekah said, "Yes, I will go."
59 So they allowed Rebekah to go with Abraham's servant and his men. Her nurse also went with them.
60 While Rebekah was leaving they said to her, "Our sister, may you be the mother of millions of people, and may your descendants defeat their enemies and take their cities."
61 Then Rebekah and her nurse got on the camels and followed the servant and his men. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
62 Isaac had left Beer Lahai Roi and was now living in the Negev.
63 One evening he went out to the field to think. He looked up and saw the camels coming from far away.
64 Rebekah also looked and saw Isaac. Then she jumped down from the camel.
65 She said to the servant, "Who is that young man walking in the field to meet us?" The servant said, "That is my master's son." So Rebekah covered her face with her veil.
66 The servant told Isaac everything that had happened.
67 Then Isaac brought the girl into his mother's tent. Rebekah became his wife that day. Isaac loved her very much. So he was comforted after his mother's death.
1 And Abraham H85 was old, H2204 and well stricken H935 in age: H3117 and the LORD H3068 had blessed H1288 H853 Abraham H85 in all things. H3605
2 And Abraham H85 said H559 unto H413 his eldest H2205 servant H5650 of his house, H1004 that ruled H4910 over all H3605 that H834 he had, Put, H7760 I pray thee, H4994 thy hand H3027 under H8478 my thigh: H3409
3 And I will make thee swear H7650 by the LORD, H3068 the God H430 of heaven, H8064 and the God H430 of the earth, H776 that H834 thou shalt not H3808 take H3947 a wife H802 unto my son H1121 of the daughters H4480 H1323 of the Canaanites, H3669 among H7130 whom H834 I H595 dwell: H3427
4 But H3588 thou shalt go H1980 unto H413 my country, H776 and to H413 my kindred, H4138 and take H3947 a wife H802 unto my son H1121 Isaac. H3327
5 And the servant H5650 said H559 unto H413 him, Peradventure H194 the woman H802 will not H3808 be willing H14 to follow H1980 H310 me unto H413 this H2063 land: H776 must I needs bring H7725 thy son H1121 again unto H413 the land H776 from whence H834 H4480 H8033 thou camest H3318 ?
6 And Abraham H85 said H559 unto H413 him, Beware H8104 thou that H6435 thou bring H7725 not H853 my son H1121 thither H8033 again.
7 The LORD H3068 God H430 of heaven, H8064 which H834 took H3947 me from my father's house H4480 H1004, H1 and from the land H4480 H776 of my kindred, H4138 and which H834 spoke H1696 unto me , and that H834 swore H7650 unto me, saying, H559 Unto thy seed H2233 will I give this H2063 land; H776 he H1931 shall send H7971 his angel H4397 before H6440 thee , and thou shalt take H3947 a wife H802 unto my son H1121 from thence H4480. H8033
8 And if H518 the woman H802 will not H3808 be willing H14 to follow H1980 H310 thee , then thou shalt be clear H5352 from this my oath H4480 H7621: H2063 only H7535 bring H7725 not my son H1121 thither H8033 again.
9 And the servant H5650 put H7760 H853 his hand H3027 under H8478 the thigh H3409 of Abraham H85 his master, H113 and swore H7650 to him concerning H5921 that H2088 matter. H1697
10 And the servant H5650 took H3947 ten H6235 camels H1581 of the camels H4480 H1581 of his master, H113 and departed; H1980 for all H3605 the goods H2898 of his master H113 were in his hand: H3027 and he arose, H6965 and went H1980 to H413 Mesopotamia, H763 unto H413 the city H5892 of Nahor. H5152
11 And he made his camels H1581 to kneel down H1288 without H4480 H2351 the city H5892 by H413 a well H875 of water H4325 at the time H6256 of the evening, H6153 even the time H6256 that women go out H3318 to draw H7579 water .
12 And he said, H559 O LORD H3068 God H430 of my master H113 Abraham, H85 I pray thee, H4994 send me good speed H7136 H6440 this day, H3117 and show H6213 kindness H2617 unto H5973 my master H113 Abraham. H85
13 Behold H2009 , I H595 stand H5324 here by H5921 the well H5869 of water; H4325 and the daughters H1323 of the men H376 of the city H5892 come out H3318 to draw H7579 water: H4325
14 And let it come to pass, H1961 that the damsel H5291 to whom H834 I shall say H559 H413 , Let down H5186 thy pitcher, H3537 I pray thee, H4994 that I may drink; H8354 and she shall say, H559 Drink, H8354 and I will give thy camels H1581 drink H8248 also: H1571 let the same be she that thou hast appointed H3198 for thy servant H5650 Isaac; H3327 and thereby shall I know H3045 that H3588 thou hast showed H6213 kindness H2617 unto H5973 my master. H113
15 And it came to pass, H1961 before H2962 he H1931 had done H3615 speaking, H1696 that, behold, H2009 Rebekah H7259 came out, H3318 who H834 was born H3205 to Bethuel, H1328 son H1121 of Milcah, H4435 the wife H802 of Nahor, H5152 Abraham's H85 brother, H251 with her pitcher H3537 upon H5921 her shoulder. H7926
16 And the damsel H5291 was very H3966 fair H2896 to look upon, H4758 a virgin, H1330 neither H3808 had any man H376 known H3045 her : and she went down H3381 to the well, H5869 and filled H4390 her pitcher, H3537 and came up. H5927
17 And the servant H5650 ran H7323 to meet H7125 her , and said, H559 Let me , I pray thee, H4994 drink H1572 a little H4592 water H4325 of thy pitcher H4480 H3537 .
18 And she said, H559 Drink, H8354 my lord: H113 and she hasted, H4116 and let down H3381 her pitcher H3537 upon H5921 her hand, H3027 and gave him drink. H8248
19 And when she had done H3615 giving him drink, H8248 she said, H559 I will draw H7579 water for thy camels H1581 also, H1571 until H5704 H518 they have done H3615 drinking. H8354
20 And she hasted, H4116 and emptied H6168 her pitcher H3537 into H413 the trough, H8268 and ran H7323 again H5750 unto H413 the well H875 to draw H7579 water , and drew H7579 for all H3605 his camels. H1581
21 And the man H376 wondering H7583 at her held his peace, H2790 to know H3045 whether the LORD H3068 had made his journey H1870 prosperous H6743 or H518 not. H3808
22 And it came to pass, H1961 as H834 the camels H1581 had done H3615 drinking, H8354 that the man H376 took H3947 a golden H2091 earring H5141 of half a shekel H1235 weight, H4948 and two H8147 bracelets H6781 for H5921 her hands H3027 of ten H6235 shekels weight H4948 of gold; H2091
23 And said, H559 Whose H4310 daughter H1323 art thou H859 ? tell H5046 me , I pray thee: H4994 is there H3426 room H4725 in thy father's H1 house H1004 for us to lodge in H3885 ?
24 And she said H559 unto H413 him, I H595 am the daughter H1323 of Bethuel H1328 the son H1121 of Milcah, H4435 which H834 she bore H3205 unto Nahor. H5152
25 She said H559 moreover unto H413 him , We have both H1571 straw H8401 and H1571 provender H4554 enough, H7227 and H1571 room H4725 to lodge in. H3885
26 And the man H376 bowed down his head, H6915 and worshiped H7812 the LORD. H3068
27 And he said, H559 Blessed H1288 be the LORD H3068 God H430 of my master H113 Abraham, H85 who H834 hath not H3808 left destitute H5800 H4480 H5973 my master H113 of his mercy H2617 and his truth: H571 I H595 being in the way, H1870 the LORD H3068 led H5148 me to the house H1004 of my master's H113 brethren. H251
28 And the damsel H5291 ran, H7323 and told H5046 them of her mother's H517 house H1004 these H428 things. H1697
29 And Rebekah H7259 had a brother, H251 and his name H8034 was Laban: H3837 and Laban H3837 ran H7323 out H2351 unto H413 the man, H376 unto H413 the well. H5869
30 And it came to pass, H1961 when he saw H7200 H853 the earring H5141 and bracelets H6781 upon H5921 his sister's H269 hands, H3027 and when he heard H8085 H853 the words H1697 of Rebekah H7259 his sister, H269 saying, H559 Thus H3541 spoke H1696 the man H376 unto H413 me ; that he came H935 unto H413 the man; H376 and, behold, H2009 he stood H5975 by H5921 the camels H1581 at H5921 the well. H5869
31 And he said, H559 Come in, H935 thou blessed H1288 of the LORD; H3068 wherefore H4100 standest H5975 thou without H2351 ? for I H595 have prepared H6437 the house, H1004 and room H4725 for the camels. H1581
32 And the man H376 came H935 into the house: H1004 and he ungirded H6605 his camels, H1581 and gave H5414 straw H8401 and provender H4554 for the camels, H1581 and water H4325 to wash H7364 his feet, H7272 and the men's H376 feet H7272 that H834 were with H854 him.
33 And there was set H7760 meat before H6440 him to eat: H398 but he said, H559 I will not H3808 eat, H398 until H5704 H518 I have told H1696 mine errand. H1697 And he said, H559 Speak on. H1696
34 And he said, H559 I H595 am Abraham's H85 servant. H5650
35 And the LORD H3068 hath blessed H1288 H853 my master H113 greatly; H3966 and he is become great: H1431 and he hath given H5414 him flocks, H6629 and herds, H1241 and silver, H3701 and gold, H2091 and menservants, H5650 and maidservants, H8198 and camels, H1581 and asses. H2543
36 And Sarah H8283 my master's H113 wife H802 bore H3205 a son H1121 to my master H113 when H310 she was old: H2209 and unto him hath he given H5414 H853 all H3605 that H834 he hath.
37 And my master H113 made me swear, H7650 saying, H559 Thou shalt not H3808 take H3947 a wife H802 to my son H1121 of the daughters H4480 H1323 of the Canaanites, H3669 in whose H834 land H776 I H595 dwell: H3427
38 But H518 H3808 thou shalt go H1980 unto H413 my father's H1 house, H1004 and to H413 my kindred, H4940 and take H3947 a wife H802 unto my son. H1121
39 And I said H559 unto H413 my master, H113 Peradventure H194 the woman H802 will not H3808 follow H1980 H310 me.
40 And he said H559 unto H413 me , The LORD, H3068 before H6440 whom H834 I walk, H1980 will send H7971 his angel H4397 with H854 thee , and prosper H6743 thy way; H1870 and thou shalt take H3947 a wife H802 for my son H1121 of my kindred H4480 , H4940 and of my father's house H4480 H1004: H1
41 Then H227 shalt thou be clear H5352 from this my oath H4480 H423 , when H3588 thou comest H935 to H413 my kindred; H4940 and if H518 they give H5414 not H3808 thee one , thou shalt be H1961 clear H5355 from my oath H4480 H423 .
42 And I came H935 this day H3117 unto H413 the well, H5869 and said, H559 O LORD H3068 God H430 of my master H113 Abraham, H85 if H518 now H4994 thou do H3426 prosper H6743 my way H1870 which H834 H5921 I H595 go: H1980
43 Behold H2009 , I H595 stand H5324 by H5921 the well H5869 of water; H4325 and it shall come to pass, H1961 that when the virgin H5959 cometh forth H3318 to draw H7579 water , and I say H559 to H413 her , Give me , I pray thee, H4994 a little H4592 water H4325 of thy pitcher H4480 H3537 to drink; H8248
44 And she say H559 to H413 me, Both H1571 drink H8354 thou, H859 and I will also H1571 draw H7579 for thy camels: H1581 let the same H1931 be the woman H802 whom H834 the LORD H3068 hath appointed out H3198 for my master's H113 son. H1121
45 And before H2962 I H589 had done H3615 speaking H1696 in H413 mine heart, H3820 behold, H2009 Rebekah H7259 came forth H3318 with her pitcher H3537 on H5921 her shoulder; H7926 and she went down H3381 unto the well, H5869 and drew H7579 water : and I said H559 unto H413 her , Let me drink, H8248 I pray thee. H4994
46 And she made haste, H4116 and let down H3381 her pitcher H3537 from H4480 H5921 her shoulder , and said, H559 Drink, H8354 and I will give thy camels H1581 drink H8248 also: H1571 so I drank, H8354 and she made the camels H1581 drink H8354 also. H1571
47 And I asked H7592 her , and said, H559 Whose H4310 daughter H1323 art thou H859 ? And she said, H559 The daughter H1323 of Bethuel, H1328 Nahor's H5152 son, H1121 whom H834 Milcah H4435 bore H3205 unto him : and I put H7760 the earring H5141 upon H5921 her face, H639 and the bracelets H6781 upon H5921 her hands. H3027
48 And I bowed down my head, H6915 and worshiped H7812 the LORD, H3068 and blessed H1288 H853 the LORD H3068 God H430 of my master H113 Abraham, H85 which H834 had led H5148 me in the right H571 way H1870 to take H3947 H853 my master's H113 brother's H251 daughter H1323 unto his son. H1121
49 And now H6258 if H518 ye will H3426 deal H6213 kindly H2617 and truly H571 with H854 my master, H113 tell H5046 me : and if H518 not, H3808 tell H5046 me ; that I may turn H6437 to H5921 the right hand, H3225 or H176 to H5921 the left. H8040
50 Then Laban H3837 and Bethuel H1328 answered H6030 and said, H559 The thing H1697 proceedeth H3318 from the LORD H4480 H3068 : we cannot H3201 H3808 speak H1696 unto H413 thee bad H7451 or H176 good. H2896
51 Behold H2009 , Rebekah H7259 is before H6440 thee, take H3947 her , and go, H1980 and let her be H1961 thy master's H113 son's H1121 wife, H802 as H834 the LORD H3068 hath spoken. H1696
52 And it came to pass, H1961 that, when H834 Abraham's H85 servant H5650 heard H8085 H853 their words, H1697 he worshiped H7812 the LORD, H3068 bowing himself to the earth. H776
