1 Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and On turned against Moses. (Korah was the son of Izhar. Izhar was the son of Kohath, and Kohath was the son of Levi. Dathan and Abiram were brothers, the sons of Eliab. And On was the son of Peleth. Dathan, Abiram, and On were descendants of Reuben.)

2 These four men gathered 250 other men from Israel together and came against Moses. They were leaders who had been chosen by the people. All the people knew them.

3 They came as a group to speak against Moses and Aaron and said, "You have gone too far—you are wrong! All the Israelites are holy—the Lord still lives among them. You are making yourselves more important than the rest of the Lord's people."

4 When Moses heard this, he bowed his face to the ground to show he was not being proud.

5 Then Moses said to Korah and all his followers, "Tomorrow morning the Lord will show who belongs to him. He will show who is holy, and he will bring that man near to him. He will choose him and bring that man near to him.

6 So Korah, you and all your followers should do this:

7 Tomorrow put fire and incense in some special pans. Then bring those pans before the Lord. He will choose the man who is holy. You Levites have gone too far—you are wrong!"

8 Moses also said to Korah, "You Levites, listen to me.

9 You should be happy that the God of Israel chose you and made you special. You are different from the rest of the Israelites. The Lord brought you near to him to do the special work in the Lord's Holy Tent to help the Israelites worship him. Isn't that enough?

10 He brought you Levites near to him to help the priests, but now you are trying to become priests also.

11 You and your followers have joined together and turned against the Lord! Did Aaron do anything wrong? No, so why are you complaining against Aaron?"

12 Then Moses called Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But the two men said, "We will not come!

13 You have brought us out of a land filled with many good things. You brought us to the desert to kill us. And now you want to show that you have even more power over us.

14 Why should we follow you? You did not bring us into the new land filled with many good things. You did not give us the land God promised. You did not give us the fields or the vineyards. Will you make these men your slaves? No! We will not come."

15 So Moses became very angry. He said to the Lord, "I never did anything wrong to these people. I never took anything from them—not even a donkey! Don't accept their gifts!"

16 Then Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers will stand before the Lord tomorrow. Aaron will also be there with you and your followers.

17 Each of you must bring a pan, put incense on it, and present it to the Lord. There will be 250 pans for the leaders and one pan for you and one pan for Aaron."

18 So each man got a pan and put burning incense on it. Then they stood at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. Moses and Aaron also stood there.

19 Korah also gathered all the people together at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. Then the Glory of the Lord appeared to everyone there.

20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

21 "Move away from these men! I want to destroy them now!"

22 But Moses and Aaron bowed to the ground and cried out, "God, you know what people are thinking. Please don't be angry with all these people. Only one man really sinned."

23 Then the Lord said to Moses,

24 "Tell the people to move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram."

25 Moses stood and went to Dathan and Abiram. All the elders of Israel followed him.

26 Moses warned the people, "Move away from the tents of these evil men. Don't touch anything that belongs to them! If you do, you will be destroyed because of their sins."

27 So the men moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram went to their tents. They stood outside of their tents with their wives, children, and little babies.

28 Then Moses said, "I will show you proof that the Lord sent me to do all the things I told you. I will show you that all these things were not my own idea.

29 These men will die, but if they die in a normal way—the way people always die— then that will show that the Lord did not really send me.

30 But if the Lord causes them to die in a different way—something new—then you will know that these men have sinned against the Lord. This is the proof: the earth will open and swallow them. They will go down to their grave still alive. And everything that belongs to these men will go down with them."

31 When Moses finished saying these things, the ground under the men opened.

32 It was as if the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them. All of Korah's men, their families, and everything they owned went down into the earth.

33 They went down into their grave alive. Everything they owned went with them. Then the earth closed over them. They were finished— gone from the camp!

34 The Israelites heard the cries of the men being destroyed. So they all ran in different directions and said, "The earth will swallow us, too!"

35 Then a fire came from the Lord and destroyed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

36 The Lord said to Moses,

37 "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to get all the incense pans from the fire. Tell him to scatter the coals and ashes. These men sinned against me, and their sin cost them their lives. But the incense pans are still holy. The pans became holy when people gave them to the Lord. Hammer the pans into flat sheets. Use the metal sheets to cover the altar. This will be a warning to all of the Israelites."

39 So Eleazar the priest gathered together all the bronze pans that the men had brought. These men were all burned up, but the pans were still there. Then Eleazar told some men to hammer the pans into flat metal. Then he put the metal sheets on the altar.

40 He did this the way the Lord commanded him through Moses. This was a sign to help the Israelites remember that only someone from the family of Aaron should burn incense before the Lord. Any other person who burns incense before the Lord will die like Korah and his followers.

41 The next day all the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron. They said, "You killed the Lord's people."

42 Moses and Aaron were standing at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. The people gathered together at that place to complain against Moses and Aaron. But when they looked toward the Meeting Tent, the cloud covered it and the Glory of the Lord appeared there.

43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Meeting Tent.

44 The Lord said to Moses,

45 "Move away from these people so that I can destroy them now." So Moses and Aaron bowed with their faces to the ground.

46 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Get your bronze pan and some fire from the altar. Then put incense on it. Hurry to the people and do the things that will make them pure. The Lord is angry with them. The trouble has already started."

47 So Aaron did what Moses said. Aaron got the incense and the fire, and he ran to the middle of the people. But the sickness had already started among them. So Aaron stood between the dead and those who were still alive. He did the things to make the people pure, and the sickness stopped there.

49 But 14,700 people died from that sickness—and that is not counting the people who died because of Korah.

50 So the terrible sickness was stopped and Aaron went back to Moses at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.

5 And he spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Korah ^H7141 and unto ^H413 ^PREP all ^H3605 ^NMS his company ^H5712 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Even tomorrow ^H1242 ^NMS the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS will show ^H3045 who ^H834 ^RPRO are his , and who is holy ^H6918 ; and will cause him to come near ^H7126 unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him : even him whom ^H834 ^RPRO he hath chosen ^H977 will he cause to come near ^H7126 unto ^H413 ^PREP him .

7 And put ^H5414 fire ^H784 ^CMS therein , and put ^H7760 ^W-VQI2MP incense ^H7004 in ^H5921 them before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS tomorrow ^H4279 ^NMS : and it shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS that the man ^H376 ^D-NMS whom ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS doth choose ^H977 , he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS shall be holy ^H6918 : ye take too much ^H7227 ^AMS upon you , ye sons ^H1121 of Levi ^H3878 .

8 And Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Korah ^H7141 , Hear ^H8085 ^VQI2MP , I pray you ^H4994 ^IJEC , ye sons ^H1121 of Levi ^H3878 :

9 Seemeth it but a small thing ^H4592 ^D-AMS unto ^H4480 ^M-PPRO-2MS you , that ^H3588 ^CONJ the God ^H430 ^CDP of Israel ^H3478 hath separated ^H914 you from the congregation ^H5712 of Israel ^H3478 , to bring you near ^H7126 to ^H413 ^PREP-3MS himself to do ^H5647 the service ^H5656 of the tabernacle ^H4908 of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and to stand ^H5975 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the congregation ^H5712 to minister ^H8334 unto them ?

10 And he hath brought thee near ^H7126 to him , and all ^H3605 ^NMS thy brethren ^H251 ^CMP-2MS the sons ^H1121 ^CMP of Levi ^H3878 with ^H854 ^PART-2MS thee : and seek ^H1245 ye the priesthood ^H3550 also ^H1571 ^CONJ ?

11 For which cause ^H3651 ^L-ADV both thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS thy company ^H5712 are gathered together ^H3259 against ^H5921 ^PREP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS : and what ^H4100 ^IPRO is Aaron ^H175 , that ^H3588 ^CONJ ye murmur ^H3885 against ^H5921 ^PREP him ?

12 And Moses ^H4872 sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS to call ^H7121 Dathan ^H1885 and Abiram ^H48 , the sons ^H1121 of Eliab ^H446 : which said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP , We will not ^H3808 ^NADV come up ^H5927 :

13 Is it a small thing ^H4592 ^D-AMS that ^H3588 ^CONJ thou hast brought us up ^H5927 out of a land ^H776 ^M-NFS that floweth ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 ^NMS and honey ^H1706 , to kill ^H4191 us in the wilderness ^H4057 , except ^H3588 ^CONJ thou make thyself altogether a prince ^H8323 over ^H5921 ^PREP-1MP us ?

14 Moreover ^H637 ^CONJ thou hast not ^H3808 ^NADV brought ^H935 us into ^H413 ^PREP a land ^H776 ^GFS that floweth ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 ^NMS and honey ^H1706 , or given ^H5414 us inheritance ^H5159 of fields ^H7704 and vineyards ^H3754 : wilt thou put out ^H5365 the eyes ^H5869 ^I-CMD of these ^H1992 ^D-PPRO-3MP men ^H376 ^D-NMP ? we will not ^H3808 ^NADV come up ^H5927 .

15 And Moses ^H4872 was very wroth ^H2734 ^W-VQY3MS , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , Respect ^H6437 ^VQI3MS not ^H408 ^NPAR thou their offering ^H4503 : I have not ^H3808 ^NADV taken ^H5375 ^VQQ1MS one ^H259 ^MMS ass ^H2543 ^CMS from ^H4480 them , neither ^H3808 ^W-NADV have I hurt ^H7489 one ^H259 of ^H4480 them .

16 And Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Korah ^H7141 , Be ^H1961 thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS thy company ^H5712 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS , and they ^H1992 , and Aaron ^H175 , tomorrow ^H4279 :

17 And take ^H3947 every man ^H376 ^NMS his censer ^H4289 , and put ^H5414 incense ^H7004 in ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them , and bring ^H7126 ye before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS every man ^H376 ^NMS his censer ^H4289 , two hundred ^H3967 ^W-MFD and fifty ^H2572 ^MMP censers ^H4289 ; thou ^H859 ^W-PPRO-2MS also , and Aaron ^H175 , each ^H376 ^NMS of you his censer ^H4289 .

20 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Moses ^H4872 and unto ^H413 ^PREP Aaron ^H175 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC ,

21 Separate yourselves ^H914 from among ^H8432 this ^H2063 ^D-DFS congregation ^H5712 , that I may consume ^H3615 them in a moment ^H7281 .

24 Speak ^H1696 ^VPFC unto ^H413 ^PREP the congregation ^H5712 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Get you up ^H5927 from about ^H5439 ^M-ADV the tabernacle ^H4908 of Korah ^H7141 , Dathan ^H1885 , and Abiram ^H48 .

25 And Moses ^H4872 rose up ^H6965 ^W-VQY3MS and went ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Dathan ^H1885 and Abiram ^H48 ; and the elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 ^LMS followed ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP him .

26 And he spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP the congregation ^H5712 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Depart ^H5493 , I pray you ^H4994 ^IJEC , from ^M-PREP the tents ^H168 of these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP wicked ^H7563 men ^H376 ^D-NMP , and touch ^H5060 nothing ^H408 of theirs , lest ^H6435 ^CONJ ye be consumed ^H5595 in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS their sins ^H2403 .

27 So they got up ^H5927 from ^M-PREP the tabernacle ^H4908 of Korah ^H7141 , Dathan ^H1885 , and Abiram ^H48 , on every side ^H5439 ^M-ADV : and Dathan ^H1885 and Abiram ^H48 came out ^H3318 ^VQQ3MP , and stood ^H5324 in the door ^H6607 ^CMS of their tents ^H168 , and their wives ^H802 , and their sons ^H1121 , and their little children ^H2945 .

28 And Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Hereby ^H2063 ye shall know ^H3045 that ^H3588 ^CONJ the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS hath sent ^H7971 me to do ^H6213 ^L-VQFC all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP works ^H4639 ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ I have not ^H3808 ^NADV done them of mine own mind ^H3820 .

29 If ^H518 ^PART these ^H428 ^PMP men die ^H4191 the common death ^H4194 of all ^H3605 ^NMS men ^H120 ^D-NMS , or if they be visited ^H6485 after ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP the visitation ^H6486 of all ^H3605 ^NMS men ^H120 ^D-NMS ; then the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS hath not ^H3808 ^NADV sent ^H7971 me .

30 But if ^H518 ^W-PART the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS make ^H1254 a new thing ^H1278 , and the earth ^H127 ^D-NFS open ^H6475 her mouth ^H6310 ^CMS-3FS , and swallow them up ^H1104 , with all ^H3605 ^NMS that ^H834 ^RPRO appertain unto them , and they go down ^H3381 quick ^H2416 ^NMP into the pit ^H7585 ; then ye shall understand ^H3045 that ^H3588 ^CONJ these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP men ^H376 ^D-NMP have provoked ^H5006 the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

31 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , as he had made an end ^H3615 of speaking ^H1696 all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP words ^H1697 ^AMP , that the ground ^H127 ^D-NFS cleaved asunder ^H1234 that ^H834 ^RPRO was under ^H8478 them :

32 And the earth ^H776 ^D-GFS opened ^H6605 her mouth ^H6310 ^CMS-3FS , and swallowed them up ^H1104 , and their houses ^H1004 ^CMP-3MP , and all ^H3605 ^NMS the men ^H120 ^D-NMS that ^H834 ^RPRO appertained unto Korah ^H7141 , and all ^H3605 ^NMS their goods ^H7399 .

33 They ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP , and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS that ^H834 ^RPRO appertained to them , went down ^H3381 alive ^H2416 ^NMP into the pit ^H7585 , and the earth ^H776 ^D-GFS closed ^H3680 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them : and they perished ^H6 from among ^H8432 the congregation ^H6951 .

34 And all ^H3605 ^W-CMS Israel ^H3478 that ^H834 ^RPRO were round about ^H5439 them fled ^H5127 at the cry ^H6963 of them : for ^H3588 ^CONJ they said ^H559 , Lest ^H6435 ^CONJ the earth ^H776 ^D-GFS swallow us up ^H1104 also .

35 And there came out ^H3318 ^VQQ3FS a fire ^H784 ^W-NMS from the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and consumed ^H398 ^W-VQY3FS the two hundred ^H3967 ^W-MFD and fifty ^H2572 men ^H376 ^NMS that offered ^H7126 incense ^H7004 .

36 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Moses ^H4872 , saying ^H559 ,

37 Speak ^H559 unto ^H413 ^PREP Eleazar ^H499 the son ^H1121 of Aaron ^H175 the priest ^H3548 , that he take up ^H7311 the censers ^H4289 out of the burning ^H8316 , and scatter ^H2219 thou the fire ^H784 yonder ^H1973 ; for ^H3588 they are hallowed ^H6942 .

38 The censers ^H4289 of these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP sinners ^H2400 against their own souls ^H5315 , let them make ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MP them broad ^H7555 plates ^H6341 ^NMP for a covering ^H6826 of the altar ^H4196 : for ^H3588 ^CONJ they offered ^H7126 them before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , therefore they are hallowed ^H6942 : and they shall be ^H1961 a sign ^H226 ^L-CMS unto the children ^H1121 ^L-CMP of Israel ^H3478 ^LMS .

39 And Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 took ^H3947 ^W-VQY3MS the brazen ^H5178 censers ^H4289 , wherewith ^H834 ^RPRO they that were burnt ^H8313 had offered ^H7126 ; and they were made broad ^H7554 plates for a covering ^H6826 of the altar ^H4196 :

40 To be a memorial ^H2146 unto the children ^H1121 ^L-CMP of Israel ^H3478 , that ^L-CONJ no ^H3808 stranger ^H2114 , which ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS is not ^H3808 ^NADV of the seed ^H2233 of Aaron ^H175 , come near ^H7126 to offer ^H6999 incense ^H7004 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS ; that he be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR as Korah ^H7141 , and as his company ^H5712 : as ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS said ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS to him by the hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS of Moses ^H4872 .

41 But on the morrow ^H4283 all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 ^CFS of the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 murmured ^H3885 against ^H5921 ^PREP Moses ^H4872 and against ^H5921 ^PREP Aaron ^H175 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS have killed ^H4191 the people ^H5971 ^NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

42 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , when the congregation ^H5712 was gathered ^H6950 against ^H5921 ^PREP Moses ^H4872 and against ^H5921 ^PREP Aaron ^H175 , that they looked ^H6437 toward ^H413 the tabernacle ^H168 ^NMS of the congregation ^H4150 ^NMS : and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , the cloud ^H6051 covered ^H3680 it , and the glory ^H3519 of the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS appeared ^H7200 ^W-VNY3MS .

43 And Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175 came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS before ^H413 ^PREP the tabernacle ^H168 ^NMS of the congregation ^H4150 .

44 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS unto ^H413 Moses ^H4872 , saying ^H559 ,

45 Get you up ^H7426 from among ^H8432 this ^H2063 ^D-DFS congregation ^H5712 , that I may consume ^H3615 them as in a moment ^H7281 . And they fell ^H5307 ^W-VQY3MP upon ^H5921 ^PREP their faces ^H6440 ^L-CMP .
