Judges 19:16 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 At that time the Israelites did not have a king. There was a Levite who lived far back in the hill country of Ephraim. That man had a woman as a slave who was like a wife to him. She was from the city of Bethlehem in the country of Judah.
2 But his slave woman had an argument with him. She left him and went back to her father's house in Bethlehem in Judah. She stayed there for four months.
3 Then her husband went after her. He wanted to speak kindly to her so that she would come back to him. He took with him his servant and two donkeys. The Levite came to her father's house. Her father saw the Levite and came out to greet him. The father was very happy.
4 The woman's father led the Levite into his house. The Levite's father-in-law invited him to stay. So he stayed for three days. He ate, drank, and slept in his fatherin- law's house.
5 On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning. The Levite was getting ready to leave. But the young woman's father said to his son-in-law, "Eat something first. After you eat, you can go."
6 So the Levite and his father-in-law sat down to eat and drink together. After that, the young woman's father said to the Levite, "Please stay tonight. Relax and enjoy yourself." So the two men ate together.
7 The Levite got up to leave, but his father-in-law persuaded him to stay the night again.
8 Then, on the fifth day, the Levite got up early in the morning. He was ready to leave. But the woman's father said to his son-in-law, "Eat something first. Relax and stay until this afternoon." So they both ate together again.
9 Then the Levite, his slave woman, and his servant got up to leave. But the young woman's father said, "It is almost dark. The day is almost gone. So stay the night here and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow morning you can get up early and go on your way."
10 But the Levite did not want to stay another night. He took his two donkeys and his slave woman. He traveled as far as the city of Jebus (that is, Jerusalem).
11 The day was almost over. They were near the city of Jebus. So the servant said to his master, the Levite, "Let's stop at this Jebusite city. Let's stay the night here."
12 But his master, the Levite man, said, "No, we will not go inside a strange city. Those people are not Israelites. We will go to the city of Gibeah. "
13 The Levite said, "Come on. Let's try to make it to Gibeah or Ramah. We can stay the night in one of those cities."
14 So the Levite and those with him traveled on. The sun was going down just as they entered the city of Gibeah. Gibeah is in the area that belongs to the tribe of Benjamin.
15 They planned to stop there and stay the night. They came to the city square and sat down, but no one invited them home to stay the night.
16 That evening an old man came into the city from the fields. His home was in the hill country of Ephraim, but now he was living in the city of Gibeah. (The men of Gibeah were from the tribe of Benjamin.)
17 The old man saw the traveler in the public square and asked, "Where are you going? Where did you come from?"
18 The Levite answered, "We are traveling from the city Bethlehem in Judah to my home, which is far back in the hill country of Ephraim. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to my house.
19 We already have straw and food for our donkeys. There is also bread and wine for me, the young woman, and my servant. We don't need anything."
20 The old man said, "You are welcome to stay at my house. I will give you anything you need, but don't stay the night in the public square."
21 Then the old man took the Levite and the people with him to his house. He fed their donkeys. They washed their feet and then had something to eat and drink.
22 While the Levite and those who were with him were enjoying themselves, some very bad men from the city surrounded the house. They began beating on the door. They shouted at the old man who owned the house. They said, "Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to have sex with him."
23 The old man went outside and said to them, "My friends, don't do such an evil thing! This man is a guest in my house. Don't commit this terrible sin.
24 Look, here is my daughter. She has never had sex before. I will bring her out to you now. This man also has a slave woman. You can use them any way you want, but don't do such a terrible sin against this man."
25 But those evil men would not listen to the old man. So the Levite took his slave woman and put her outside with them. They hurt her and raped her all night long. Then, at dawn, they let her go.
26 At dawn, the woman came back to the house where her master was staying. She fell down at the front door and lay there until it was daylight.
27 The Levite got up early the next morning. He wanted to go home. He opened the door to go outside, and a hand fell across the threshold of the door. There was his slave woman. She had fallen down against the door.
28 The Levite said to her, "Get up, let's go." But there was no answer. The Levite put her body on his donkey and went home.
29 When he arrived at his house, he took a knife and cut her body into 12 parts. Then he sent the 12 parts of the woman to each of the areas where the Israelites lived.
30 Everyone who saw this said, "Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel before. We haven't seen anything like this from the time we came out of Egypt. Discuss this and tell us what to do."
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 BD-NMP , when there was no H369 NPAR king H4428 in Israel H3478 , that there was H1961 W-VQY3MS a certain H376 NMS Levite H3881 sojourning H1481 VQPMS on the side H3411 of mount H2022 CMS Ephraim H669 , who took H3947 W-VQY3MS to him a concubine H6370 out of Bethlehem H1035 - judah .
2 And his concubine H6370 played the whore H2181 against H5921 PREP-3MS him , and went away H1980 W-VQQ3FS from him unto H413 PREP her father H1 \'s house H1004 CMS to H413 PREP Bethlehem H1035 - judah , and was H1961 W-VQY3FS there H8033 ADV four H702 MMS whole H3117 NMP months H2320 .
3 And her husband H376 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS after H310 her , to speak H1696 friendly H3820 unto her , and to bring her again H7725 , having his servant H5288 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and a couple H6776 of asses H2543 : and she brought H935 him into her father H1 \'s house H1004 CMS : and when the father H1 CMS-1MS of the damsel H5291 saw H7200 him , he rejoiced H8055 W-VQY3MS to meet H7125 him .
4 And his father H2859 - in - law , the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 CMS-1MS , retained H2388 him ; and he abode H3427 W-VQY3MS with H854 PREP-3MS him three H7969 BMS days H3117 NMP : so they did eat H398 W-VQY3MP and drink H8354 , and lodged H3885 there H8033 ADV .
5 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS on the fourth H7243 day H3117 B-AMS , when they arose early H7925 in the morning H1242 , that he rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS to depart H1980 L-VQFC : and the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 CMS-1MS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his son H2860 - in - law , Comfort H5582 thine heart H3820 CMS-2MS with a morsel H6595 of bread H3899 NMS , and afterward H310 W-ADV go your way H1980 .
6 And they sat down H3427 W-VQY3MP , and did eat H398 W-VQY3MP and drink H8354 both H8147 ONUM-3MP of them together H3162 ADV-3MS : for the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 CMS-1MS had said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the man H376 D-NMS , Be content H2974 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and tarry all night H3885 , and let thine heart H3820 CMS-2MS be merry H3190 .
7 And when the man H376 D-NMS rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS to depart H1980 L-VQFC , his father H2859 - in - law urged H6484 him : therefore he lodged H3885 there H8033 ADV again H7725 .
8 And he arose early H7925 in the morning H1242 B-NMS on the fifth H2549 day H3117 B-AMS to depart H1980 L-VQFC : and the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 CMS-1MS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Comfort H5582 thine heart H3824 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC . And they tarried H4102 until H5704 PREP afternoon H5186 , and they did eat H398 W-VQY3MP both H8147 of them .
9 And when the man H376 D-NMS rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS to depart H1980 L-VQFC , he H1931 PPRO-3MS , and his concubine H6370 , and his servant H5288 , his father H2859 - in - law , the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 CMS-1MS , said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Behold H2009 IJEC , now H4994 IJEC the day H3117 D-AMS draweth H7503 toward evening H6150 , I pray you H4994 IJEC tarry all night H3885 : behold H2009 IJEC , the day H3117 D-AMS groweth to an end H2583 , lodge H3885 here H6311 ADV , that thine heart H3824 may be merry H3190 ; and tomorrow H4279 NMS get you early H7925 on your way H1870 , that thou mayest go H1980 home H168 .
10 But the man H376 D-NMS would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR tarry that night H3885 , but he rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS and departed H1980 W-VQY3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS over against H5704 PREP Jebus H2982 , which H1931 PPRO-3FS is Jerusalem H3389 ; and there were with H5973 W-PREP-3MS him two H6776 NMS asses H2543 saddled H2280 , his concubine H6370 also was with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
11 And when they H1992 PPRO-3MP were by H5973 PREP Jebus H2982 , the day H3117 was far H3966 ADV spent H7286 ; and the servant H5288 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his master H113 , Come H1980 VQI2MS-3FS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and let us turn in H5493 into H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 of the Jebusites H2983 D-TMS , and lodge H3885 in it .
12 And his master H113 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , We will not H3808 NADV turn aside H5493 hither into H413 PREP the city H5892 GFS of a stranger H5237 AMS , that H834 RPRO is not H3808 ADV of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 ; we will pass over H5674 to H5704 PREP Gibeah H1390 .
13 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto his servant H5288 , Come H1980 , and let us draw near H7126 to one H259 of these places H4725 to lodge all night H3885 , in Gibeah H1390 , or H176 CONJ in Ramah H7414 .
14 And they passed on H5674 and went their way H1980 W-VQY3MP ; and the sun H8121 D-NMS went down H935 W-VQY3FS upon them when they were by H681 Gibeah H1390 , which H834 RPRO belongeth to Benjamin H1144 .
15 And they turned aside H5493 thither H8033 ADV , to go in H935 L-VQFC and to lodge H3885 in Gibeah H1390 : and when he went in H935 W-VQY3MS , he sat him down H3427 W-VQY3MS in a street H7339 of the city H5892 D-GFS : for there was no H369 W-NPAR man H376 NMS that took H622 them into his house H1004 to lodging H3885 .
16 And , behold H2009 IJEC , there came H935 VQPMS an old H2205 PFS man H376 NMS from H4480 PREP his work H4639 out of H4480 PREP the field H7704 D-NMS at even H6153 , which H3676 was also of mount H2022 Ephraim H669 ; and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS sojourned H1481 in Gibeah H1390 : but the men H376 NMS of the place H4725 D-NMS were Benjamites H1145 .
17 And when he had lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MS his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS a wayfaring H732 man H376 D-NMS in the street H7339 of the city H5892 D-GFS : and the old H2205 man H376 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Whither H575 ADV goest H1980 VQY2MS thou ? and whence H370 WM-ADV comest H935 thou ?
18 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , We H587 PPRO-1MP are passing H5674 from Bethlehem H1035 - judah toward H5704 PREP the side H3411 CFS of mount H2022 CMS Ephraim H669 ; from thence H8033 M-ADV am I H595 PPRO-1MS : and I went H1980 to H5704 PREP Bethlehem H1035 - judah , but I H589 PPRO-1MS am now going H1980 to the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS ; and there is no H369 W-NPAR man H376 NMS that receiveth H622 me to house H1004 .
19 Yet there is H3426 PART both H1571 W-CONJ straw H8401 and H1571 CONJ provender H4554 for our asses H2543 ; and there is H3426 ADV bread H3899 NMS and wine H3196 also H1571 W-CONJ for me , and for thy handmaid H519 , and for the young man H5288 which is with H5973 PREP thy servants H5650 : there is no H369 NPAR want H4270 of any H3605 NMS thing H1697 .
20 And the old H2205 man H376 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Peace H7965 NMS be with thee ; howsoever H7535 ADV let all H3605 NMS thy wants H4270 lie upon H5921 me ; only H7535 ADV lodge H3885 not H408 NPAR in the street H7339 BD-NFS .
21 So he brought H935 him into his house H1004 L-CMS-3MS , and gave provender H1101 unto the asses H2543 : and they washed H7364 their feet H7272 CFD-3MP , and did eat H398 W-VQY3MP and drink H8354 .
22 Now as they H1992 PPRO-3MP were making their hearts merry H3190 , behold H2009 IJEC , the men H376 D-NMS of the city H5892 D-GFS , certain H376 D-NMS sons H1121 of Belial H1100 , beset the house round about H5437 , and beat H1849 at H5921 PREP the door H1817 , and spoke H559 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP the master H1167 CMS of the house H1004 D-NMS , the old man H2205 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Bring forth the man H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO came H935 VQPMS into H413 PREP thine house H1004 D-NMS , that we may know H3045 him .
23 And the man H376 D-NMS , the master H1167 CMS of the house H1004 D-NMS , went out H3318 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Nay H408 NPAR , my brethren H251 NMP-1MS , nay , I pray you H4994 IJEC , do not so wickedly H7489 ; seeing that PREP this H2088 D-PMS man H376 D-NMS is come H935 VQPMS into H413 mine house H1004 CMS-1MS , do H6213 not H408 NPAR this H2063 folly H5039 .
24 Behold H2009 IJEC , here is my daughter H1323 a maiden H1330 , and his concubine H6370 ; them I will bring out H3318 now H4994 IJEC , and humble H6031 ye them , and do H6213 with them what seemeth H5869 good H2896 D-NMS unto you : but unto this H2088 D-PMS man H376 do H6213 not H3808 NADV so H2063 vile H5039 a thing H1697 CMS .
25 But the men H376 D-NMS would H14 VQQ3MP not H3808 W-NPAR hearken H8085 to him : so the man H376 D-NMS took H2388 his concubine H6370 , and brought her forth W-VHY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them ; and they knew H3045 W-VQY3MP her , and abused H5953 her all H3605 NMS the night H3915 D-AMS until H5704 PREP the morning H1242 : and when the day H7837 began to spring H5927 , they let her go H7971 .
26 Then came H935 W-VQY3FS the woman H802 D-NFS in the dawning H6437 of the day H1242 , and fell down H5307 W-VQY3FS at the door H6607 CMS of the man H376 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS where H834 RPRO her lord H113 was , till H5704 PREP it was light H216 .
27 And her lord H113 rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and opened H6605 W-VQY3MS the doors H1817 of the house H1004 D-NMS , and went out H3318 W-VQY3MS to go H1980 L-VQFC his way H1870 : and , behold H2009 IJEC , the woman H802 D-NFS his concubine H6370 was fallen down H5307 at the door H6607 CMS of the house H1004 D-NMS , and her hands H3027 were upon H5921 PREP the threshold H5592 .
28 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her , Up H6965 , and let us be going H1980 . But none H369 W-NPAR answered H6030 . Then the man took H3947 W-VQY3MS her up upon H5921 PREP an ass H2543 , and the man H376 D-NMS rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS , and got H1980 W-VQY3MS him unto his place H4725 .
29 And when he was come H935 W-VQY3MS into H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS , he took H3947 W-VQY3MS a knife H3979 , and laid hold H2388 on his concubine H6370 , and divided H5408 her , together with her bones H6106 , into twelve H8147 pieces H5409 , and sent H7971 her into all H3605 the coasts H1366 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
30 And it was H1961 W-VQQ3MS so , that all H3605 CMS that saw H7200 it said H559 , There was no H3808 ADV such H2063 deed done H1961 W-VQQ3MS nor H3808 ADV seen H7200 from the day H3117 that the children H1121 of Israel H3478 came up H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS : consider H7760 of H5921 PREP-3FS it , take advice H5779 , and speak H1696 your minds .
