Judges 18:21 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 At that time the Israelites did not have a king. And the tribe of Dan was still looking for a place to live. They did not have their own land yet. The other tribes of Israel already had their land, but the tribe of Dan had not taken their land yet.
2 So the tribe of Dan sent five soldiers to look for some land. They went to search for a good place to live. These five men were from the cities of Zorah and Eshtaol. They were chosen because they were from all the families of Dan. They were told, "Go, look for some land." The five men came to the hill country of Ephraim. They came to Micah's house and spent the night there.
3 When the five men came close to Micah's house, they heard the voice of the young Levite man. They recognized his voice, so they stopped at Micah's house. They asked the young man, "Who brought you to this place? What are you doing? Why are you here?"
4 The young man told them what Micah had done for him. "Micah hired me," the young man said. "I am his priest."
5 So they said to him, "Please ask God if our search for a place to live will be successful."
6 The priest said to the five men, "Yes. Go in peace. The Lord will lead you on your way."
7 So the five men left. They came to the city of Laish and saw that the people of that city lived in safety. They were ruled by the people of Sidon. Everything was peaceful and quiet. The people had plenty of everything, and they didn't have any enemies nearby to hurt them. Also they lived a long way from the city of Sidon, and they did not have any agreements with the people of Aram.
8 The five men went back to the cities of Zorah and Eshtaol. Their relatives asked them, "What did you learn?"
9 The five men answered, "We have found some land, and it is very good. We should attack them. Don't wait! Let's go and take that land!
10 When you come to that place, you will see that there is plenty of land. There is plenty of everything there. You will also see that the people are not expecting an attack. Surely God has given that land to us."
11 So 600 men from the tribe of Dan left the cities of Zorah and Eshtaol. They were ready for war.
12 On their way to the city of Laish, they stopped near the city of Kiriath Jearim in the land of Judah. They set up a camp there. That is why the place west of Kiriath Jearim is named Mahaneh Dan to this very day.
13 From there the 600 men traveled on to the hill country of Ephraim. Then they came to Micah's house.
14 So the five men who had explored the land around Laish spoke. They said to their relatives, "There is an ephod in one of these houses. And there are also household gods, a carved statue, and a silver idol. You know what to do."
15 So they stopped at Micah's house, where the young Levite lived. They asked the young man how he was.
16 The 600 men from the tribe of Dan stood at the entrance of the gate. They all had their weapons and were ready for war.
17 The five spies went into the house. The priest stood just outside by the gate with the 600 men who were ready for war. The men took the carved idol, the ephod, the household idols, and the silver idol. The young Levite priest said, "What are you doing?"

19 The five men answered, "Be quiet! Don't say a word. Come with us. Be our father and our priest. You must choose. Is it better for you to be a priest for just one man or for a whole tribe of Israelites with many family groups?"
20 This made the Levite happy. So he took the ephod, the household idols, and the idol. He went with the men from the tribe of Dan.
21 Then the 600 men from the tribe of Dan and the Levite priest turned and left Micah's house. They put their little children, their animals, and all their things in front of them.
22 The men from the tribe of Dan went a long way from that place. But the people living near Micah met together. Then they began chasing the men of Dan and caught up with them.
23 The men with Micah were shouting at the men of Dan. The men of Dan turned around and said to Micah, "What's the problem? Why are you shouting?"
24 Micah answered, "You men from Dan took my idols. I made them for myself. You have also taken my priest. What do I have left now? How can you ask me, 'What's the problem?'"
25 The men from the tribe of Dan answered, "You had better not argue with us. Some of our men become angry easily. If you shout at us, they might attack you. You and your families might get killed."
26 Then the men of Dan turned around and went on their way. Micah knew that these men were too strong for him, so he went back home.
27 So the men of Dan took the idols that Micah made. They also took the priest who had been with Micah. Then they came to Laish. They attacked the people living in Laish. Those people were at peace. They were not expecting an attack. The men of Dan killed them with their swords and then burned the city.
28 The people living in Laish did not have anyone to rescue them. They lived too far from the city of Sidon for the people there to help. And the people of Laish did not have any agreements with the people of Aram—so they did not help them. The city of Laish was in a valley, which belonged to the town of Beth Rehob. The people from Dan built a new city in that place, and it became their home.
29 The people of Dan gave the city a new name. That city had been called Laish, but they changed the name to Dan. They named the city after their ancestor Dan, one of the sons of Israel.
30 The people of the tribe of Dan set up the idol in the city of Dan. They made Jonathan son of Gershom their priest. Gershom was the son of Moses. Jonathan and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time when the Israelites were taken into captivity.
31 The people of Dan set up for themselves the idol that Micah had made. That idol was there the whole time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

2 And the children H1121 CMP of Dan H1835 sent H7971 of their family H4940 five H2568 men H376 NMP from their coasts H7098 , men H376 NMP of valor H2428 NMS , from Zorah H6881 , and from Eshtaol H847 , to spy out H7270 the land H776 D-GFS , and to search H2713 it ; and they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Go H1980 VQI2MP , search H2713 the land H776 D-GFS : who when they came H935 W-VQY3MP to mount H2022 CMS Ephraim H669 , to H5704 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Micah H4318 , they lodged H3885 there H8033 ADV .
3 When they H1992 PPRO-3MP were by H5973 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Micah H4318 , they H1992 knew H5234 VHQ3MP the voice H6963 CMS of the young man H5288 the Levite H3881 : and they turned in H5493 thither H8033 ADV , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto him , Who H4310 IPRO brought H935 thee hither H1988 ? and what H4100 makest H6213 VQPMS thou H859 PPRO-2MS in this H2088 place ? and what H4100 W-IPRO hast thou here H6311 ?
4 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Thus H2090 and thus H2090 dealeth H6213 VQQ3MS Micah H4318 with me , and hath hired H7936 me , and I am H1961 W-VQY1MS his priest H3548 .
5 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto him , Ask counsel H7592 VQI2MS , we pray thee H4994 IJEC , of God H430 , that we may know H3045 W-VQI1CP whether our way H1870 which H834 RPRO we H587 PPRO-1MP go H1980 shall be prosperous H6743 .
6 And the priest H3548 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Go H1980 VQI2MP in peace H7965 : before H5227 the LORD H3068 EDS is your way H1870 wherein H834 RPRO ye go H1980 .
7 Then the five H2568 men H376 D-NMP departed H1980 W-VQY3MP , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to Laish H3919 , and saw H7200 W-VQY3MP the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were therein H7130 , how they dwelt H3427 careless H983 L-NMS , after the manner H4941 of the Zidonians H6722 , quiet H8252 and secure H982 ; and there was no H369 W-NPAR magistrate H3423 in the land H776 B-NFS , that might put them to shame H3637 in any thing H1697 VQPMS ; and they H1992 PPRO-3MP were far H7350 from the Zidonians H6722 , and had no H369 NPAR business H1697 W-NMS with H5973 PREP any man H120 .
8 And they came H935 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP their brethren H251 to Zorah H6881 and Eshtaol H847 : and their brethren H251 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto them , What H4100 IGAT say ye H859 ?
9 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Arise H6965 , that we may go up H5927 against H5921 PREP-3MP them : for H3588 CONJ we have seen H7200 the land H776 D-GFS , and , behold H2009 IJEC , it is very H3966 ADV good H2896 NFS : and are ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP still H2814 ? be not slothful H6101 to go H1980 L-VQFC , and to enter H935 to possess H3423 the land H776 D-GFS .
10 When ye go H935 , ye shall come H935 unto H413 PREP a people H5971 NMS secure H982 , and to a large H7342 land H776 WD-GFS : for H3588 CONJ God H430 EDP hath given H5414 it into your hands H3027 NFD ; a place H4725 NUM-MS where H834 RPRO there is no H369 ADV want H4270 of any H3605 NMS thing H1697 VQPMS that H834 RPRO is in the earth H776 B-GFS .
11 And there went H5265 from thence H8033 M-ADV of the family H4940 M-CFS of the Danites H1839 , out of Zorah H6881 and out of Eshtaol H847 , six H8337 hundred H3967 BFP men H376 NMS appointed H2296 with weapons H3627 of war H4421 .
12 And they went up H5927 , and pitched H2583 in Kirjath H7157 - jearim , in Judah H3063 : wherefore H3651 ADV they called H7121 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS place H4725 Mahaneh H4265 - dan unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS : behold H2009 IJEC , it is behind H310 PREP Kirjath H7157 - jearim .
13 And they passed H5674 thence H8033 M-ADV unto mount H2022 CMS Ephraim H669 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP unto H5704 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Micah H4318 .
14 Then answered H6030 the five H2568 men H376 that went H1980 to spy out H7270 the country H776 D-GFS of Laish H3919 , and said H559 unto H413 PREP their brethren H251 , Do ye know H3045 that H3588 CONJ there is H3426 PART in these H428 D-DPRO-3MP houses H1004 an ephod H646 , and teraphim H8655 , and a graven image H6459 , and a molten image H4541 ? now H6258 W-ADV therefore consider H3045 what H4100 IGAT ye have to do H6213 .
15 And they turned H5493 thitherward H8033 ADV-3FS , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP the house H1004 of the young man H5288 the Levite H3881 , even unto the house H1004 CMS of Micah H4318 , and saluted H7592 him .
16 And the six H8337 W-RFS hundred H3967 BFP men H376 NMS appointed H2296 with their weapons H3627 of war H4421 , which H834 RPRO were of the children H1121 of Dan H1835 , stood H5324 by the entering H6607 CMS of the gate H8179 .
17 And the five H2568 men H376 D-NMS that went H5927 to spy out H7270 the land H776 D-GFS went up H5927 , and came in H935 VQQ3MP thither H8033 ADV-3FS , and took H3947 the graven image H6459 , and the ephod H646 , and the teraphim H8655 , and the molten image H4541 : and the priest H3548 stood H5324 in the entering H6607 CMS of the gate H8179 with the six H8337 W-RFS hundred H3967 BFP men H376 D-NMS that were appointed H2296 with weapons H3627 of war H4421 .
18 And these H428 W-PMP went H935 VQQ3MP into Micah H4318 \'s house H1004 CMS , and fetched H3947 W-VQY3MP the carved image H6459 , the ephod H646 , and the teraphim H8655 , and the molten image H4541 . Then said H559 W-VQY3MS the priest H3548 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , What H4100 IGAT do H6213 ye H859 PPRO-2MS ?
19 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto him , Hold thy peace H2790 VHI2MP , lay H7760 thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS upon H5921 PREP thy mouth H6310 CMS-2MS , and go H1980 with H5973 PREP-1MP us , and be H1961 to us a father H1 and a priest H3548 : is it better H2896 I-NMS for thee to be H1961 a priest H3548 NMS unto the house H1004 of one H259 MMS man H376 NMS , or H176 CONJ that thou be H1961 a priest H3548 NMS unto a tribe H7626 L-NMS and a family H4940 in Israel H3478 ?
20 And the priest H3548 \'s heart H3820 NMS was glad H3190 , and he took H3947 W-VQY3MS the ephod H646 , and the teraphim H8655 , and the graven image H6459 , and went H935 W-VQY3MS in the midst H7130 of the people H5971 D-NMS .
21 So they turned H6437 and departed H1980 W-VQY3MP , and put H7760 W-VQY3MP the little ones H2945 and the cattle H4735 and the carriage H3520 before H6440 them .
22 And when they H1992 PPRO-3MP were a good way H7368 from the house H1004 of Micah H4318 , the men H376 that H834 RPRO were in the houses H1004 near H5973 PREP to Micah H4318 \'s house H1004 CMS were gathered together H2199 , and overtook H1692 the children H1121 of Dan H1835 .
23 And they cried H7121 unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Dan H1835 . And they turned H5437 their faces H6440 CMP-3MP , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto Micah H4318 , What H4100 IPRO aileth thee , that H3588 CONJ thou comest with such a company H2199 ?
24 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Ye have taken away H3947 my gods H430 which H834 RPRO I made H6213 VQQ1MS , and the priest H3548 , and ye are gone away H1980 : and what H4100 IPRO have I more H5750 ADV ? and what H4100 IPRO is this H2088 PMS that ye say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , What H4100 IPRO aileth thee ?
25 And the children H1121 of Dan H1835 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Let not H408 NPAR thy voice H6963 be heard H8085 among H5973 PREP-1MP us , lest H6435 angry H4751 fellows H376 NMP run H6293 upon thee , and thou lose H622 thy life H5315 GFS , with the lives H5315 GFS of thy household H1004 .
26 And the children H1121 CMP of Dan H1835 went H1980 W-VQY3MP their way H1870 : and when Micah H4318 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP were too strong H2389 AMP for H4480 M-PREP-3MS him , he turned H6437 and went back H7725 unto H413 PREP his house H1004 CMS-3MS .
27 And they H1992 took H3947 the things which H834 RPRO Micah H4318 had made H6213 VQQ3MS , and the priest H3548 which H834 RPRO he had H1961 VQQ3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MP unto H5921 PREP Laish H3919 , unto H5921 PREP a people H5971 NMS that were at quiet H8252 and secure H982 : and they smote H5221 W-VHY3MP them with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 NFS , and burnt H8313 the city H5892 D-GFS with fire H784 .
28 And there was no H369 W-NPAR deliverer H5337 , because H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3FS was far H7350 from Zidon H6721 , and they had no H369 NPAR business H1697 W-NMS with H5973 PREP any man H120 NMS ; and it H1931 PPRO-3FS was in the valley H6010 that H834 RPRO lieth by Beth H1050 - rehob . And they built H1129 a city H5892 D-GFS , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP therein .
29 And they called H7121 W-VQY3MP the name H8034 CMS of the city H5892 D-GFS Dan H1835 , after the name H8034 B-CMS of Dan H1835 their father H1 CMS-3MP , who H834 RPRO was born H3205 unto Israel H3478 : howbeit H199 W-CONJ the name H8034 CMS of the city H5892 D-GFS was Laish H3919 at the first H7223 .
30 And the children H1121 W-CMP-3MS of Dan H1835 set up H6965 the graven image H6459 : and Jonathan H3083 , the son H1121 W-CMP-3MS of Gershom H1648 , the son H1121 W-CMP-3MS of Manasseh H4519 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and his sons H1121 W-CMP-3MS were H1961 VQQ3MP priests H3548 to the tribe H7626 L-NMS of Dan H1839 until H5704 PREP the day H3117 NMS of the captivity H1540 of the land H776 D-GFS .
31 And they set them up H7760 W-VQY3MP Micah H4318 \'s graven image H6459 , which H834 RPRO he made H6213 VQQ3MS , all H3605 NMS the time H3117 CMP that the house H1004 CMS of God H430 D-EDP was H1961 VQFC in Shiloh H7887 .
