Joshua 7:3 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 But the Israelites did not obey God. There was a man from the tribe of Judah named Achan son of Carmi, grandson of Zimri. Achan kept some of the things that should have been destroyed. So the Lord became very angry with the Israelites.
2 After they defeated Jericho, Joshua sent some men to Ai. Ai was near Beth Aven, east of Bethel. He told them, "Go to Ai and look for weaknesses in that area." So the men went to spy on that land.
3 Later, the men came back to Joshua. They said, "Ai is a weak area. We will not need all of our people to defeat them. Send 2000 or 3000 men to fight there. There is no need to use the whole army. There are only a few men there to fight against us."
4 So about 3000 men went to Ai, but the people of Ai killed about 36 men of Israel. And the Israelites ran away. The people of Ai chased them from the city gates all the way to the quarries. The people of Ai beat them badly. When the people from Israel saw this, they became very frightened and lost their courage.

6 When Joshua heard about this, he tore his clothes to show his sadness. He bowed down to the ground before the Holy Box and stayed there until evening. The leaders of Israel did the same thing. They also threw dirt on their heads to show their sadness.
7 Joshua said, "Lord God, you brought our people across the Jordan River. Why did you bring us this far and then allow the Amorites to destroy us? We should have been satisfied and stayed on the other side of the Jordan River.
8 I promise by my life, Lord! There is nothing I can say now. Israel has surrendered to the enemy.
9 The Canaanites and all the other people in this country will hear about what happened. Then they will attack us and kill all of us! Then what will you do to protect your great name?"
10 The Lord said to Joshua, "Why are you down there with your face on the ground? Stand up!
11 The Israelites sinned against me. They have broken the agreement that I commanded them to obey. They took some of the things that I commanded them to destroy. They have stolen from me. They have lied. They have taken those things for themselves.
12 That is why the army of Israel turned and ran away from the fight. They did that because they have done wrong. They should be destroyed. I will not continue to help you or be with you unless you destroy everything I commanded you to destroy.
13 "Now go and make the people pure. Tell them, 'Make yourselves pure. Prepare for tomorrow. The Lord, the God of Israel, says that some people are keeping things that he commanded to be destroyed. You will never be able to defeat your enemies until you throw away those things.
14 "'Tomorrow morning you must all stand before the Lord. All of the tribes will stand before the Lord, and he will choose one tribe. Only that tribe will stand before him. Then the Lord will choose one family group from that tribe. Only that family group must stand before him. Then he will look at each family in that family group, and the Lord will choose one family. Then he will look at each man in that family.
15 The man who is keeping those things that we should have destroyed will be caught. Then he will be destroyed by fire, and everything that he owns will be destroyed with him. He broke the agreement with the Lord. He has done a very bad thing to the Israelites!'"
16 Early the next morning, Joshua led all the Israelites before the Lord. All of the tribes stood before the Lord. He chose the tribe of Judah.
17 So all the family groups of Judah stood before the Lord. He chose the Zerah family group. Then all the families of the Zerah group stood before the Lord. The family of Zimri was chosen.
18 Then Joshua told all the men in that family to come before the Lord. He chose Achan the son of Carmi. (Carmi was the son of Zimri. And Zimri was the son of Zerah.)
19 Then Joshua said to Achan, "Son, you must honor the Lord, the God of Israel. Praise him and confess your sins to him. Tell me what you did, and don't try to hide anything from me."
20 Achan answered, "It is true! I sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I did:
21 In Jericho, I saw a beautiful coat from Babylon, about 5 pounds of silver, and about a pound of gold. I wanted these things for myself, so I took them. You will find them buried in the ground under my tent. The silver is under the coat."
22 So Joshua sent some men to the tent. They ran to the tent and found the things hidden there. The silver was under the coat.
23 The men brought the things out of the tent and took them to Joshua and all the Israelites. They threw them on the ground before the Lord.
24 Then Joshua and all the people led Achan son of Zerah to the Valley of Achor. They also took the silver, the coat, the gold, Achan's sons and daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and everything he owned. They took all these things to the Valley of Achor with Achan.
25 Then Joshua said, "You caused much trouble for us, but now the Lord will bring trouble to you." Then all the people threw stones at Achan and his family until they died. Then the people burned them and everything he owned.
26 After they burned Achan, they put many rocks over his body. The rocks are still there today. That is why it is called the Valley of Achor. After this the Lord was not angry with the people.
1 But the children H1121 of Israel H3478 committed H4603 a trespass H4604 in the accursed thing H2764 : for Achan H5912 , the son H1121 CMS of Carmi H3756 , the son H1121 CMS of Zabdi H2067 , the son H1121 of Zerah H2226 , of the tribe H4294 of Judah H3063 , took H3947 W-VQY3MS of H4480 PREP the accursed thing H2764 : and the anger H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was kindled H2734 against the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
2 And Joshua H3091 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS men H376 NMP from Jericho H3405 to Ai H5857 , which H834 RPRO is beside H5973 PREP Beth H1007 - aven , on the east side H6924 M-NMS of Bethel H1008 LFS , and spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Go up H5927 and view H7270 the country H776 D-GFS . And the men H376 D-NMP went up H5927 and viewed H7270 Ai H5857 D-EFS .
3 And they returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Let not H408 NPAR all H3605 NMS the people H5971 go up H5927 ; but let about two H505 or H176 CONJ three H7969 thousand H505 MMP men H376 NMS go up H5927 and smite H5221 Ai H5857 ; and make not H408 NPAR all H3605 NMS the people H5971 to labor H3021 thither H8033 ADV-3FS ; for H3588 CONJ they H1992 are but few H4592 AMS .
4 So there went up H5927 thither H8033 ADV-3FS of H4480 PREP the people H5971 about three H7969 thousand H505 MMP men H376 NMS : and they fled H5127 W-VQY3MP before H6440 L-CMP the men H376 NMS of Ai H5857 D-EFS .
5 And the men H376 NMS of Ai H5857 smote H5221 W-VHY3MP of H4480 them about thirty H7970 and six H8337 men H376 NMS : for they chased H7291 them from before H6440 L-CMP the gate H8179 even unto H5704 PREP Shebarim H7671 , and smote H5221 them in the going down H4174 : wherefore the hearts H3824 of the people H5971 melted H4549 , and became H1961 W-VQY3MS as water H4325 .
6 And Joshua H3091 rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H8071 , and fell H5307 W-VQY3MS to the earth H776 NFS-3FS upon H5921 PREP his face H6440 L-CMP before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 EDS until H5704 PREP the eventide H6153 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 , and put H5927 dust H6083 NMS upon H5921 PREP their heads H7218 .
7 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Alas H162 , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , wherefore H4100 L-IGAT hast thou at all brought H5674 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS , to deliver H5414 L-VQFC us into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , to destroy H6 us ? would to God H3863 we had been content H2974 , and dwelt H3427 on the other side H5676 Jordan H3383 !
8 O H994 Lord H136 EDS , what H4100 IGAT shall I say H559 VQY1MS , when H310 PREP Israel H3478 turneth H2015 VQQ3MS their backs H6203 before H6440 L-CMP their enemies H341 !
9 For the Canaanites H3669 and all H3605 W-CMS the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 D-GFS shall hear H8085 of it , and shall environ us round H5437 , and cut off H3772 our name H8034 from H4480 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS : and what H4100 wilt thou do H6213 unto thy great H1419 D-AMS name H8034 ?
10 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , Get thee up H6965 ; wherefore H4100 L-IPRO liest H5307 VQPMS thou H859 PPRO-2MS thus H2088 PMS upon H5921 PREP thy face H6440 CMP-2MS ?
11 Israel H3478 hath sinned H2398 VQQ3MS , and they have also H1571 W-CONJ transgressed H5674 VQQ3MP my covenant H1285 B-CFS-1MS which H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 them : for they have even H1571 W-CONJ taken H3947 of H4480 PREP the accursed thing H2764 , and have also H1571 W-CONJ stolen H1589 , and dissembled H3584 also H1571 W-CONJ , and they have put H7760 VQQ3MP it even H1571 W-CONJ among their own stuff H3627 .
12 Therefore the children H1121 of Israel H3478 could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR stand H6965 before H6440 L-CMP their enemies H341 , but turned H6437 their backs H6203 before H6440 L-CMP their enemies H341 , because H3588 CONJ they were H1961 VQQ3MP accursed H2764 : neither H3808 W-NPAR will I be H1961 L-VQFC with H5973 PREP-3MP you any more H3254 VHY1MS , except H518 PART ye destroy H8045 the accursed H2764 from among H7130 you .
13 Up H6965 , sanctify H6942 the people H5971 , and say H559 , Sanctify yourselves H6942 against tomorrow H4279 : for H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 . There is an accursed thing H2764 in the midst H7130 of thee , O Israel H3478 : thou canst H3201 not H3808 NADV stand H6965 before H6440 L-CMP thine enemies H341 VQPMP-2MS , until H5704 PREP ye take away H5493 the accursed thing H2764 from among H7130 you .
14 In the morning H1242 B-NMS therefore ye shall be brought H7126 according to your tribes H7626 : and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that the tribe H7626 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS taketh H3920 shall come H7126 according to the families H4940 thereof ; and the family H4940 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS shall take H3920 shall come H7126 by households H1004 ; and the household H1004 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS shall take H3920 shall come H7126 man by man H1397 .
15 And it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that he that is taken H3920 with the accursed thing H2764 shall be burnt H8313 with fire H784 , he and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he hath : because H3588 CONJ he hath transgressed H5674 VQQ3MS the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and because H3588 CONJ he hath wrought H6213 VQQ3MS folly H5039 NFS in Israel H3478 .
16 So Joshua H3091 rose up early H7925 in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and brought H7126 Israel H3478 by their tribes H7626 ; and the tribe H7626 CMS of Judah H3063 was taken H3920 :
17 And he brought H7126 the family H4940 of Judah H3063 ; and he took H3920 the family H4940 of the Zarhites H2227 : and he brought H7126 the family H4940 of the Zarhites H2227 man by man H1397 ; and Zabdi H2067 was taken H3920 :
18 And he brought H7126 his household H1004 NMS-3MS man by man H1397 ; and Achan H5912 , the son H1121 CMS of Carmi H3756 , the son H1121 CMS of Zabdi H2067 , the son H1121 CMS of Zerah H2226 , of the tribe H4294 of Judah H3063 , was taken H3920 .
19 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Achan H5912 , My son H1121 NMS-1MS , give H7760 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , glory H3519 to the LORD H3068 L-EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , and make H5414 confession H8426 unto him ; and tell H5046 me now H4994 IJEC what H4100 IPRO thou hast done H6213 VQQ2MS ; hide H3582 it not H408 NPAR from H4480 PREP-1MS me .
20 And Achan H5912 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS Joshua H3091 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Indeed H546 I H595 PPRO-1MS have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS against the LORD H3068 L-EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , and thus H2063 and thus H2063 have I done H6213 VQQ1MS :
21 When I saw H7200 among the spoils H7998 a H259 OFS goodly H2896 NFS Babylonish H8152 LFS garment H155 , and two hundred H3967 W-MFD shekels H8255 of silver H3701 NMS , and a H259 MMS wedge H3956 of gold H2091 NMS of fifty H2572 MMP shekels H8255 weight H4948 , then I coveted H2530 them , and took H3947 them ; and , behold H2009 , they are hid H2934 in the earth H776 B-NFS in the midst H8432 B-NMS of my tent H168 , and the silver H3701 under H8478 it .
22 So Joshua H3091 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 , and they ran H7323 unto the tent H168 ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , it was hid H2934 in his tent H168 B-CMS-3MS , and the silver H3701 under H8478 it .
23 And they took H3947 W-VQY3MS-3MP them out of the midst H8432 of the tent H168 , and brought H935 them unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , and unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and laid them out H3332 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
24 And Joshua H3091 , and all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , took H3947 W-VQY3MS Achan H5912 the son H1121 CMP-3MS of Zerah H2226 , and the silver H3701 , and the garment H155 , and the wedge H3956 L-CMS of gold H2091 , and his sons H1121 CMP-3MS , and his daughters H1323 , and his oxen H7794 CMS-3MS , and his asses H2543 , and his sheep H6629 GFS-3MS , and his tent H168 , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he had : and they brought H5927 them unto the valley H6010 CMS of Achor H5911 .
25 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Why H4100 IPRO hast thou troubled H5916 us ? the LORD H3068 EDS shall trouble H5916 thee this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 B-AMS . And all H3605 CMS Israel H3478 stoned H5619 him with stones H68 GFS , and burned H8313 them with fire H784 , after they had stoned H7275 them with stones H68 GFS .
26 And they raised H6965 over H5921 PREP-3MS him a great H1419 AMS heap H1530 NMS of stones H68 NFP unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS . So the LORD H3068 EDS turned H7725 from the fierceness H2740 M-CMS of his anger H639 CMS-3MS . Wherefore H5921 PREP-3MS the name H8034 CMS of that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS place H4725 D-NMS was called H7121 VQQ3MS , The valley H6010 CMS of Achor H5911 , unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS .
