Jeremiah 40:15 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 The message from the Lord came to Jeremiah after he was set free at the city of Ramah. Nebuzaradan, the commander of the king of Babylon's special guards, found Jeremiah in Ramah. Jeremiah was bound with chains. He was with all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah. They were being taken away in captivity to Babylon.
2 When commander Nebuzaradan found Jeremiah, he spoke to him. He said, "Jeremiah, the Lord, your God, announced that this disaster would come to this place.
3 And now the Lord has done everything just as he said he would do. This disaster happened because you people of Judah sinned against the Lord. You didn't obey the Lord.
4 But now, Jeremiah, I will set you free. I am taking the chains off your wrists. If you want to, come with me to Babylon, and I will take good care of you. But if you don't want to come with me, then don't come. Look, the whole country is open to you. Go anywhere you want.
5 Or go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan. The king of Babylon has chosen Gedaliah to be governor over the towns of Judah. Go and live with Gedaliah among the people. Or you can go anywhere you want." Then Nebuzaradan gave Jeremiah some food and a present and let him go.
6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. He stayed with Gedaliah among those who were left behind in the land of Judah.
7 There were some soldiers from the army of Judah, officers and their men, still out in the open country when Jerusalem was destroyed. They heard that the king of Babylon had put Gedaliah son of Ahikam in charge of those who were left in the land. Those who were left were men, women, and children who were very poor. They were not carried off to Babylon as captives.
8 So the soldiers came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. They were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and his brother Jonathan, sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, sons of Ephai from Netophah, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, and the men who were with them.
9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, made an oath to make the soldiers and their men feel more secure. This is what he said: "You soldiers, don't be afraid to serve the Babylonian people. Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon. If you do this, things will go well for you.
10 I myself will live in Mizpah. I will speak for you before the Chaldeans who come here. You leave that work to me. You should harvest the wine, the summer fruit, and the oil. Put what you harvest in your storage jars. Live in the towns that you control."
11 All the people of Judah who were in the countries of Moab, Ammon, Edom, and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left some people of Judah in the land. And they heard that the king of Babylon had chosen Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, to be governor over them.
12 When the people of Judah heard this news, they came back to the land of Judah. They came back to Gedaliah at Mizpah from all the countries where they had been scattered. So they came back and gathered a large harvest of wine and summer fruit.
13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the officers of the army of Judah who were still in the open country came to Gedaliah. Gedaliah was at the town of Mizpah.
14 Johanan and the officers with him said to Gedaliah, "Do you know that Baalis, the king of the Ammonites, wants to kill you? He has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you." But Gedaliah son of Ahikam didn't believe them.
15 Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in private at Mizpah. Johanan said to Gedaliah, "Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah. No one will know anything about it. We should not let Ishmael kill you. That would cause all the people of Judah who are gathered around you to be scattered to different countries again. And that would mean that the few survivors of Judah would be lost."
16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, "Don't kill Ishmael. The things you are saying about Ishmael are not true."

2 And the captain H7227 AMS of the guard H2876 took H3947 W-VQY3MS Jeremiah H3414 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , The LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hath pronounced H1696 VPQ3MS this H2063 D-DFS evil H7451 D-AFS upon H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS .
3 Now the LORD H3068 EDS hath brought H935 W-VHY3MS it , and done H6213 W-VQY3MS according as H834 K-RPRO he hath said H1696 : because H3588 CONJ ye have sinned H2398 against the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and have not H3808 W-NPAR obeyed H8085 his voice H6963 B-CMS-3MS , therefore this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 is come H1961 W-VQQ3MS upon you .
4 And now H6258 W-ADV , behold H2009 IJEC , I loose H6605 thee this day H3117 D-AMS from H4480 the chains H246 which H834 RPRO were upon H5921 PREP thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS . If H518 PART it seem good unto thee H2896 AMS to come H935 L-VQFC with H854 PREP-1MS me into Babylon H894 , come H935 ; and I will look well H7760 unto H5921 PREP thee : but if H518 PART it seem ill unto thee H7489 to come H935 with H854 PREP-1MS me into Babylon H894 , forbear H2308 : behold H7200 VQI2MS , all H3605 NMS the land H776 D-GFS is before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee : whither H413 PREP it seemeth H5869 good H2896 AMS and convenient H3477 for thee to go H1980 L-VQFC , thither H8033 ADV-3FS go H1980 .
5 Now while he was not H3808 ADV yet H5750 gone back H7725 VQY3MS , he said , Go back H7725 also to H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 CMS of Shaphan H8227 , whom H834 RPRO the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS hath made governor H6485 over the cities H5892 B-CFP of Judah H3063 , and dwell H3427 with H854 PREP-3MS him among H8432 B-NMS the people H5971 : or H176 CONJ go H1980 L-VQFC wheresoever H413 PREP it seemeth H5869 convenient H3477 unto thee to go H1980 VQI2MS . So the captain H7227 AMS of the guard H2876 gave H5414 W-VQY3MS him victuals H737 and a reward H4864 , and let him go H7971 .
6 Then went H935 W-VQY3MS Jeremiah H3414 unto H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 to Mizpah H4708 ; and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS with H854 PREP-3MS him among H8432 B-NMS the people H5971 that were left H7604 in the land H776 B-GFS .
7 Now when all H3605 CMS the captains H8269 CMP of the forces H2428 which H834 RPRO were in the fields H7704 B-NMS , even they H1992 PPRO-3MP and their men H376 , heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS had made Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 governor H6485 in the land H776 B-NFS , and H3588 CONJ had committed H6485 unto H854 PREP-3MS him men H376 NMP , and women H802 , and children H2945 , and of the poor H1803 of the land H776 D-GFS , of them that RPRO were not H3808 ADV carried away captive H1540 to Babylon H894 ;
8 Then they came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 to Mizpah H4708 , even Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , and Johanan H3110 and Jonathan H3129 the sons H1121 CMS of Kareah H7143 , and Seraiah H8304 the son H1121 W-CMP of Tanhumeth H8576 , and the sons H1121 of Ephai H5778 the Netophathite H5200 , and Jezaniah H3153 the son H1121 of a Maachathite H4602 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP and their men H376 .
9 And Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 CMS of Shaphan H8227 swore H7650 unto them and to their men H376 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Fear H3372 not H408 NPAR to serve H5647 the Chaldeans H3778 : dwell H3427 in the land H776 BD-GFS , and serve H5647 the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS , and it shall be well H3190 with you .
10 As for me H589 W-PPRO-1MS , behold H2009 , I will dwell H3427 VQPMS at Mizpah H4709 to serve H5975 the Chaldeans H3778 , which H834 RPRO will come H935 VQY3MP unto H413 us : but ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP , gather H622 ye wine H3196 NMS , and summer fruits H7019 W-NMS , and oil H8081 , and put H7760 them in your vessels H3627 , and dwell H3427 in your cities H5892 that H834 RPRO ye have taken H8610 .
11 Likewise H1571 W-CONJ when all H3605 CMS the Jews H3064 that H834 RPRO were in Moab H4124 , and among the Ammonites H1121 , and in Edom H123 , and that H834 RPRO were in all H3605 B-CMS the countries H776 , heard H8085 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS had left H5414 VQQ3MS a remnant H7611 of Judah H3063 , and that H3588 CONJ he had set H6485 over H5921 PREP-3MP them Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 ;
12 Even all H3605 CMS the Jews H3064 returned H7725 W-VUY3MP out of all H3605 M-CMS places H4725 whither H834 RPRO they were driven H5080 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to the land H776 of Judah H3063 , to H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 , unto Mizpah H4708 , and gathered H622 wine H3196 NMS and summer fruits H7019 very H3966 ADV much H7335 .
13 Moreover Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 W-CMS the captains H8269 CMP of the forces H2428 that H834 RPRO were in the fields H7704 B-NMS , came H935 VQQ3MP to H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 to Mizpah H4708 ,
14 And said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Dost thou certainly know H3045 that H3588 CONJ Baalis H1185 the king H4428 NMS of the Ammonites H1121 hath sent H7971 VQQ3MS Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 to slay H5221 thee ? But Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 believed H539 them not H3808 W-NPAR .
15 Then Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 spoke H559 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 in Mizpah H4709 secretly H5643 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let me go H1980 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and I will slay H5221 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , and no H3808 NADV man H376 W-NMS shall know H3045 VQY3MS it : wherefore H4100 L-IPRO should he slay H5221 thee , that all H3605 NMS the Jews H3063 which are gathered H6908 unto H413 PREP thee should be scattered H6327 , and the remnant H7611 in Judah H3063 perish H6 ?
16 But Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Johanan H3110 the son H1121 CMS of Kareah H7143 , Thou shalt not H408 ADV do H6213 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS : for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS speakest H1696 falsely H8267 NMS of H413 PREP Ishmael H3458 .
