Genesis 44:8 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Then Joseph gave a command to his servant. He said, "Fill the men's sacks with as much grain as they can carry. Then put each man's money into his sack with the grain.
2 Put the youngest brother's money in his sack too. But also put my special silver cup in his sack." So the servant obeyed Joseph.
3 Early the next morning the brothers and their donkeys were sent back to their country.
4 After they had left the city, Joseph said to his servant, "Go and follow the men. Stop them and say to them, 'We were good to you! So why have you been bad to us? Why did you steal my master's silver cup?
5 My master drinks from that cup, and he uses it to learn secret things. What you did was wrong!'"
6 So the servant obeyed. He rode out to the brothers and stopped them. The servant said to them what Joseph had told him to say.
7 But the brothers said to the servant, "Why does the governor say these things? We wouldn't do anything like that!
8 We brought back the money that we found in our sacks before. So surely we wouldn't steal silver or gold from your master's house.
9 If you find the silver cup in any of our sacks, let that man die. You can kill him, and we will be your slaves."
10 The servant said, "I agree, except that only the man who is found to have the cup will be my slave. The others will be free."
11 Then every brother quickly opened his sack on the ground.
12 The servant started looking in the sacks. He started with the oldest brother and ended with the youngest. He found the cup in Benjamin's sack.
13 The brothers were very sad. They tore their clothes to show their sadness. They put their sacks back on the donkeys and went back to the city.
14 When Judah and his brothers went back to Joseph's house, Joseph was still there. The brothers fell to the ground and bowed down before him.
15 Joseph said to them, "Why have you done this? Didn't you know that I have a special way of learning secrets? No one is better at this than I am!"
16 Judah said, "Sir, there is nothing we can say. There is no way to explain. There is no way to show that we are not guilty. God has judged us guilty for something else we have done. So all of us, even Benjamin, will be your slaves."
17 But Joseph said, "I will not make you all slaves! Only the man who stole the cup will be my slave. You others can go in peace to your father."
18 Then Judah went to Joseph and said, "Sir, please let me speak plainly with you. Please don't be angry with me. I know that you are like Pharaoh himself.
19 When we were here before, you asked us, 'Do you have a father or a brother?'
20 And we answered you, 'We have a father—he is an old man. And we have a younger brother. Our father loves him because he was born while our father was old. This youngest son's brother is dead, so he is the only son who is left from that mother. Our father loves him very much.'
21 Then you said to us, 'Bring that brother to me. I want to see him.'
22 And we said to you, 'That young boy cannot come. He cannot leave his father. If his father loses him, his father will be so sad that he will die.'
23 But you said to us, 'You must bring your youngest brother, or I will not sell you grain again.'
24 So we went back to our father and told him what you said.
25 "Later, our father said, 'Go back and buy us some more food.'
26 We said to our father, 'We cannot go without our youngest brother. The governor said he will not sell us grain again until he sees our youngest brother.'
27 Then my father said to us, 'You know that my wife Rachel gave me two sons.
28 I let one son go away, and he was killed by a wild animal. And I haven't seen him since.
29 If you take my other son away from me, and something happens to him, I will be sad enough to die.'
30 Now, imagine what will happen when we go home without our youngest brother—he is the most important thing in our father's life!
31 Our father will die if he sees that the boy isn't with us—and it will be our fault. We will send our father to his grave a very sad man.
32 "I took responsibility for the young boy. I told my father, 'If I don't bring him back to you, you can blame me all my life.'
33 So now I beg you, please let the boy go back with his brothers, and I will stay and be your slave.
34 I cannot go back to my father if the boy is not with me. I am very afraid of what would happen to my father."
1 And he commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS the steward H834 RPRO of his house H1004 NMS-3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Fill H4390 the men H376 NMS \'s sacks H572 with food H400 NMS , as much as H834 RPRO they can H3201 carry H5375 VQFC , and put H7760 W-VQI2MS every man H376 NMS \'s money H3701 in his sack H572 \'s mouth H6310 B-CMS .
2 And put H7760 VQY2MS my cup H1375 , the silver H3701 cup H1375 , in the sack H572 \'s mouth H6310 B-CMS of the youngest H6996 D-AMS , and his corn H7668 money H3701 NMS . And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS according to the word H1697 K-NMS that H834 RPRO Joseph H3130 had spoken H1696 .
3 As soon as the morning H1242 was light H215 , the men H376 were sent away H7971 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP and their asses H2543 .
4 And when they H1992 PPRO-3MP were gone out of the city H5892 D-GFS , and not H3808 NADV yet far off H7368 , Joseph H3130 said H559 VQQ3MS unto his steward H1004 NMS-3MS , Up H6965 VQI2MS , follow H7291 after H310 PREP the men H376 ; and when thou dost overtake H5381 them , say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO have ye rewarded H7999 evil H7451 AFS for H8478 NMS good H2896 NFS ?
5 Is not H3808 D-NPAR this H2088 DPRO it in which H834 RPRO my lord H113 drinketh H8354 , and whereby indeed he divineth H5172 ? ye have done evil H7489 in so H834 RPRO doing H6213 .
6 And he overtook H5381 them , and he spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them these same H428 words H1697 AMP .
7 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO saith H1696 VPY3MS my lord H113 these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 ? God forbid H2486 IJEC-3FS that thy servants H5650 should do H6213 according to this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 :
8 Behold H2005 IJEC , the money H3701 NMS , which H834 RPRO we found H4672 VQQ1MP in our sacks H572 \' mouths H6310 B-CMS , we brought again H7725 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee out of the land H776 M-NFS of Canaan H3667 EMS : how H349 W-IJEC then should we steal H1589 out of thy lord\'s house H1004 silver H3701 NMS or H176 CONJ gold H2091 ?
9 With H854 PREP-3MS whomsoever H834 RPRO of thy servants H5650 it be found H4672 , both let him die H4191 , and we H587 PPRO-1MP also H1571 W-CONJ will be H1961 my lord H113 \'s bondmen H5650 .
10 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Now H6258 ADV also H1571 CONJ let it H1931 PPRO-3MS be according unto your words H1697 : he with H854 PREP-3MS whom H834 RPRO it is found H4672 shall be H1961 VQY3MS my servant H5650 ; and ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP shall be H1961 blameless H5355 .
11 Then they speedily H4116 took down H3381 every man H376 NMS his sack H572 to the ground H776 NFS-3FS , and opened H6605 every man H376 NMS his sack H572 .
12 And he searched H2664 , and began H2490 VHQ3MS at the eldest H1419 , and left H3615 at the youngest H6996 : and the cup H1375 was found H4672 in Benjamin H1144 \'s sack H572 .
13 Then they rent H7167 their clothes H8071 , and laded H6006 every man H376 NMS his ass H2543 , and returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to the city H5892 .
14 And Judah H3063 and his brethren H251 came H935 W-VQY3MS to Joseph H3130 \'s house H1004 ; for he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was yet H5750 there H8033 ADV : and they fell H5307 W-VQY3MP before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him on the ground H776 NFS-3FS .
15 And Joseph H3130 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , What H4100 IGAT deed H4639 is this H2088 D-PMS that H834 RPRO ye have done H6213 ? know H3045 ye not H3808 D-NPAR that H3588 CONJ such a man H376 NMS as I H3644 can certainly divine H5172 ?
16 And Judah H3063 said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO shall we say H559 W-VQY3MS unto my lord H113 ? what H4100 IPRO shall we speak H1696 ? or how H4100 IPRO shall we clear ourselves H6663 ? God H430 D-EDP hath found out H4672 VQPMS the iniquity H5771 of thy servants H5650 : behold H2009 , we are my lord H113 \'s servants H5650 NMP , both H1571 CONJ we H587 PPRO-1MP , and he also H1571 CONJ with whom H834 RPRO the cup H1375 is found H4672 VNQ3MS .
17 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , God forbid H2486 IJEC-3FS that I should do H6213 so H2063 DPRO : but the man H376 D-NMS in whose H834 RPRO hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS the cup H1375 is found H4672 VNQ3MS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall be H1961 VQY3MS my servant H5650 ; and as for you H859 W-PPRO-2MP , get you up H5927 in peace H7965 unto H413 PREP your father H1 .
18 Then Judah H3063 came near H5066 unto him H413 PREP-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Oh H994 my lord H113 , let thy servant H5650 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , speak H1696 VPY3MS a word H1697 NMS in my lord H113 \'s ears H241 , and let not H408 W-NPAR thine anger H639 burn H2734 against thy servant H5650 : for H3588 CONJ thou art even as H3644 Pharaoh H6547 .
19 My lord H113 asked H7592 his servants H5650 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Have H3426 I-ADV ye a father H1 NMS , or H176 CONJ a brother H251 ?
20 And we said H559 unto H413 PREP my lord H113 , We have H3426 ADV a father H1 NMS , an old man H2205 PFS , and a child H3206 W-NMS of his old age H2208 , a little one H6996 ; and his brother H251 is dead H4191 , and he H1931 PPRO-3MS alone H905 L-CMS-3MS is left H3498 of his mother H517 , and his father H1 loveth H157 him .
21 And thou saidst H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP thy servants H5650 , Bring him down H3381 unto H413 PREP me , that I may set H7760 mine eyes H5869 CMS-1MS upon H5921 him .
22 And we said H559 unto H413 PREP my lord H113 , The lad H5288 cannot H3808 NADV leave H5800 his father H1 CMS-3MS : for if he should leave H5800 his father H1 CMS-3MS , his father would die H4191 .
23 And thou saidst H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP thy servants H5650 , Except H518 PART your youngest H6996 D-AMS brother H251 come down H3381 with H854 PART-2MP you , ye shall see H7200 L-VQFC my face H6440 no H3808 NADV more H3254 .
24 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS when H3588 CONJ we came up H5927 unto H413 PREP thy servant H5650 my father H1 CMS-1MS , we told H5046 him the words H1697 CMP of my lord H113 .
25 And our father H1 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go again H7725 , and buy H7666 us a little H4592 AMS food H400 NMS .
26 And we said H559 , We cannot H3808 NADV go down H3381 : if H518 PART our youngest H6996 D-AMS brother H251 be H3426 PART with H854 PREP-1MP us , then will we go down H3381 : for H3588 CONJ we may H3201 not H3808 NADV see H7200 L-VQFC the man H376 D-NMS \'s face H6440 CMP , except H369 our youngest H6996 D-AMS brother H251 be with H854 us .
27 And thy servant H5650 my father H1 CMS-1MS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 us , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS know H3045 that H3588 CONJ my wife H802 bore H3205 VQQ3FS me two H8147 ONUM sons :
28 And the one H259 D-AMS went out H3318 W-VQY3MS from me , and I said H559 W-VQY1MS , Surely H389 ADV he is torn in pieces H2963 ; and I saw H7200 him not H3808 W-NPAR since H5704 PREP :
29 And if ye take H3947 this H2088 DPRO also H1571 CONJ from M-PREP me H6440 NMP-1MS , and mischief H611 befall H7136 him , ye shall bring down H3381 my gray hairs H7872 with sorrow H7451 to the grave H7585 .
30 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore when I come H935 to H413 PREP thy servant H5650 my father H1 CMS-1MS , and the lad H5288 be not H369 with H854 PREP-1MP us ; seeing that his life H5315 W-CFS-3MS is bound up H7194 in the lad\'s life H5315 ;
31 It shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when he seeth H7200 that H3588 CONJ the lad H5288 is not H369 NPAR with us , that he will die H4191 : and thy servants H5650 shall bring down H3381 the gray hairs H7872 of thy servant H5650 our father H1 with sorrow H3015 to the grave H7585 .
32 For H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 became surety H6148 VQQ3MS for the lad H5288 unto H5973 M-PREP my father H1 CMS-1MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , If H518 PART I bring H935 him not H3808 NADV unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , then I shall bear the blame H2398 to my father H1 forever H3117 D-NMP .
33 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , let thy servant H5650 abide H3427 instead of H8478 NMS the lad H5288 a bondman H5650 NMS to my lord H113 ; and let the lad H5288 go up H5927 with H5973 PREP his brethren H251 .
34 For H3588 CONJ how H349 shall I go up H5927 to H413 PREP my father H1 CMS-1MS , and the lad H5288 be not H369 with H854 PREP-1MS me ? lest peradventure H6435 CONJ I see H7200 VQY1MS the evil H7451 that H834 RPRO shall come on VQY3MS my father H1 .
