Matthew 23:1 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Then Jesus spoke to the people and to his followers. He said,
2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees have the authority to tell you what the Law of Moses says.
3 So you should obey them. Do everything they tell you to do. But their lives are not good examples for you to follow. They tell you to do things, but they don't do those things themselves.
4 They make strict rules that are hard for people to obey. They try to force others to obey all their rules. But they themselves will not try to follow any of those rules.
5 "The only reason they do what they do is for other people to see them. They make the little Scripture boxes they wear bigger and bigger. And they make the tassels on their prayer clothes long enough for people to notice them.
6 These men love to have the places of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues.
7 They love for people to show respect to them in the marketplaces and to call them 'Teacher.'
8 "But you must not be called 'Teacher.' You are all equal as brothers and sisters. You have only one Teacher.
9 And don't call anyone on earth 'Father.' You have one Father. He is in heaven.
10 And you should not be called 'Master.' You have only one Master, the Christ.
11 Whoever serves you like a servant is the greatest among you.
12 People who think they are better than others will be made humble. But people who humble themselves will be made great.
13 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You close the way for people to enter God's kingdom. You yourselves don't enter, and you stop those who are trying to enter.

15 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites. You travel across the seas and across different countries to find one person who will follow your ways. When you find that person, you make him worse than you are. And you are so bad that you belong in hell!
16 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You guide the people, but you are blind. You say, 'If anyone uses the name of the Temple to make a promise, that means nothing. But anyone who uses the gold that is in the Temple to make a promise must keep that promise.'
17 You are blind fools! Can't you see that the Temple is greater than the gold on it? It's the Temple that makes the gold holy!
18 "And you say, 'If anyone uses the altar to make a promise, that means nothing. But anyone who uses the gift on the altar to make a promise must keep that promise.'
19 You are blind! Can't you see that the altar is greater than any gift on it? It's the altar that makes the gift holy!
20 Whoever uses the altar to make a promise is really using the altar and everything on the altar.
21 And anyone who uses the Temple to make a promise is really using the Temple and God, who lives in it.
22 Whoever uses heaven to make a promise is using God's throne and the one who is seated on it.
23 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You give God a tenth of everything you own—even your mint, dill, and cumin. But you don't obey the really important teachings of the law—being fair, showing mercy, and being faithful. These are the things you should do. And you should also continue to do those other things.
24 You guide the people, but you are blind! Think about a man picking a little fly out of his drink and then swallowing a camel! You are like that.
25 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees. You are hypocrites! You wash clean the outside of your cups and dishes. But inside they are full of what you got by cheating others and pleasing yourselves.
26 Pharisees, you are blind! First make the inside of the cup clean and good. Then the outside of the cup will also be clean.
27 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You are like tombs that are painted white. Outside they look fine, but inside they are full of dead people's bones and all kinds of filth.
28 It is the same with you. People look at you and think you are godly. But on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and evil.
29 "It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets. And you show honor to the graves of the godly people who were killed.
30 And you say, 'If we had lived during the time of our ancestors, we would not have helped them kill these prophets.'
31 So you give proof that you are descendants of those who killed the prophets.
32 And you will finish the sin that your ancestors started!
33 "You are snakes! You are from a family of poisonous snakes! You will not escape God. You will all be judged guilty and go to hell!
34 So I tell you this: I send to you prophets and teachers who are wise and know the Scriptures. You will kill some of them. You will hang some of them on crosses. You will beat some of them in your synagogues. You will chase them from town to town.
35 "So you will be guilty for the death of all the good people who have been killed on earth. You will be guilty for the killing of that godly man Abel. And you will be guilty for the killing of Zechariah son of Berachiah. He was killed between the Temple and the altar. You will be guilty for the killing of all the good people who lived between the time of Abel and the time of Zechariah.
36 Believe me when I say that all of these things will happen to you people who are living now.
37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets. You stone to death those that God has sent to you. Many, many times I wanted to help your people. I wanted to gather them together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you did not let me.
38 Now your house will be left completely empty.
39 I tell you, you will not see me again until that time when you will say, 'Welcome! God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord.' "

3 All G3956 A-APN therefore G3767 CONJ whatsoever G3745 K-APN they bid G2036 V-2AAS-3P you G5213 P-2DP observe G5083 V-PAN , that observe G5083 V-PAM-2P and G2532 CONJ do G4160 V-PAM-2P ; but G1161 CONJ do G4160 V-PAM-2P not G3361 PRT-N ye after G2596 PREP their G3588 T-APN works G2041 N-APN : for G1063 CONJ they say G3004 V-PAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ do G4160 V-PAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N .
4 For G1063 CONJ they bind G1195 V-PAI-3P heavy G926 A-APN burdens G5413 N-APN and G2532 CONJ grievous to be borne G1419 A-APN , and G2532 CONJ lay G2007 V-PAI-3P them G3588 T-GPM on G1909 PREP men G444 N-GPM \'s shoulders G5606 N-APM ; but G1161 CONJ they themselves will G2309 V-PAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N move G2795 V-AAN them G846 P-GPM with one of their G848 fingers G1147 N-DSM .
5 But G1161 CONJ all G3956 A-APN their G3588 T-APN works G2041 N-APN they do G4160 V-PAI-3P for to be seen G2300 V-APN of men G444 N-DPM : they G1161 CONJ make broad G4115 V-PAI-3P their G3588 T-APN phylacteries G5440 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ enlarge G3170 V-PAI-3P the G3588 T-APN borders G2899 N-APN of G3588 T-GPN their G3588 T-GPN garments G2440 N-GPN ,
6 And G5037 PRT love G5368 V-PAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF uppermost rooms G4411 N-ASF at G1722 PREP feasts G1173 N-DPN , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APF chief seats G4410 N-APF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF synagogues G4864 N-DPF ,
7 And G2532 CONJ greetings G783 N-APM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF markets G58 N-DPF , and G2532 CONJ to be called G2564 V-PPN of G3588 T-GPM men G444 N-GPM , Rabbi G4461 HEB , Rabbi G4461 HEB .
8 But G1161 CONJ be not G3361 PRT-N ye G5210 P-2NP called G2564 V-APS-2P Rabbi G4461 HEB : for G1063 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S your G3588 T-NSM Master G2519 N-NSM , even Christ G5547 N-NSM ; and G1161 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P brethren G80 N-NPM .
9 And G2532 CONJ call G2564 V-AAS-2P no G3361 PRT-N man your G5216 P-2GP father G3962 N-ASM upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF : for G1063 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S your G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM , which G3588 T-NSM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM .
10 Neither G3366 CONJ be ye called G2564 V-APS-2P masters G2519 N-NPM : for G1063 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S your G3588 T-NSM Master G2519 N-NSM , even Christ G5547 N-NSM .
11 But G1161 CONJ he that is greatest G3187 A-NSM-C among you G5216 P-2GP shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S your G5216 P-2GP servant G1249 N-NSM .
12 And G1161 CONJ whosoever G3748 R-NSM shall exalt G5312 V-FAI-3S himself G1438 F-3ASM shall be abased G5013 V-FPI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ he G3748 R-NSM that shall humble G5013 V-FAI-3S himself G1438 F-3ASM shall be exalted G5312 V-FPI-3S .
13 But G1161 woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , scribes G1122 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-VPM , hypocrites G5273 N-VPM ! for G3754 CONJ ye shut up G2808 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF of heaven G3772 N-GPM against G1715 PREP men G444 N-GPM : for G1063 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP neither G3756 PRT-N go in G1525 V-PNI-2P yourselves , neither G3761 ADV suffer G863 V-PAI-2P ye G3588 T-APM them that are entering G1525 V-PNP-APM to go in G1525 V-2AAN .
14 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , scribes G1122 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-VPM , hypocrites G5273 N-VPM ! for G3754 CONJ ye G3588 T-GPF devour G2719 V-PAI-2P widows G5503 N-GPF \' houses G3614 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ for a pretence G4392 N-DSF make long prayer G4336 V-PNP-NPM : therefore G1223 PREP ye shall receive G2983 V-FDI-2P the greater G4056 damnation G2917 N-ASN .
15 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , scribes G1122 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-VPM , hypocrites G5273 N-VPM ! for G3754 CONJ ye G3588 T-ASF compass G4013 V-PAI-2P sea G2281 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ land G3584 N-ASF to make G4160 V-AAN one G1520 A-ASM proselyte G4339 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ when G3752 CONJ he is made G1096 V-2ADS-3S , ye make G4160 V-PAI-2P him G846 P-ASM twofold more G1362 A-ASM-C the child G5207 N-ASM of hell G1067 N-GSF than yourselves G5216 P-2GP .
16 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , ye blind G5185 A-VPM guides G3595 N-VPM , which say G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Whosoever G302 PRT shall swear G3660 V-AAS-3S by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM temple G3485 N-DSM , it is G2076 V-PXI-3S nothing G3762 A-NSN ; but G1161 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall swear G3660 V-AAS-3S by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM gold G5557 N-DSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM temple G3485 N-GSM , he is a debtor G3784 V-PAI-3S !
17 Ye fools G3474 A-VPM and G2532 CONJ blind G5185 A-VPM : for G1063 CONJ whether G5101 I-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S greater G3187 A-NSM-C , the G3588 T-NSM gold G5557 N-NSM , or G2228 PRT the G3588 T-NSM temple G3485 N-NSM that sanctifieth G37 V-PAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASM gold G5557 N-ASM ?
18 And G2532 CONJ , Whosoever G1437 COND shall swear G3660 V-AAS-3S by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN altar G2379 N-DSN , it is G2076 V-PXI-3S nothing G3762 A-NSN ; but G1161 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM sweareth G3660 V-AAS-3S by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN gift G1435 N-DSN that G3588 T-DSN is upon G1883 ADV it G846 P-GSN , he is guilty G3784 V-PAI-3S .
19 Ye fools G3474 A-VPM and G2532 CONJ blind G5185 A-VPM : for G1063 CONJ whether G5101 I-NSN is greater G3187 , the G3588 T-NSN gift G1435 N-NSN , or G2228 PRT the G3588 T-NSN altar G2379 N-NSN that sanctifieth G37 V-PAP-NSN the G3588 T-ASN gift G1435 N-ASN
20 Whoso therefore shall swear G3660 V-AAP-NSM by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN altar G2379 N-DSN , sweareth G3660 V-PAI-3S by G1722 PREP it G846 P-DSN , and G2532 CONJ by G1722 PREP all things G3956 A-DPN thereon G1883 ADV .
21 And whoso shall swear G3660 V-AAP-NSM by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM temple G3485 N-DSM , sweareth G3660 V-PAI-3S by G1722 PREP it G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ by G1722 PREP him that dwelleth therein G846 P-ASM .
22 And G2532 CONJ he that shall swear G3660 V-AAP-NSM by G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM , sweareth G3660 V-PAI-3S by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM throne G2362 N-DSM of God G2316 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ by G1722 PREP him that sitteth G2521 V-PNP-DSM thereon G1883 ADV .
23 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , scribes G1122 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-VPM , hypocrites G5273 N-VPM ! for G1063 ye pay tithe G586 V-PAI-2P of mint G2238 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ anise G432 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ cummin G2951 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ have omitted G863 V-AAI-2P the G3588 T-APN weightier G926 A-APN-C matters of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM law G3551 N-GSM , judgment G2920 N-ASF , mercy G1656 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ faith G4102 N-ASF : these G5023 D-APN ought G1163 V-IQI-3S ye to have done G4160 V-AAN , and not G3361 PRT-N to leave G863 V-PAN the other G2548 D-NPN-C undone G863 V-AAI-2P .
24 Ye blind G5185 A-VPM guides G3595 N-VPM , which strain G1368 V-PAP-NPM at a gnat G2971 N-ASM , and G1161 CONJ swallow G2666 V-PAP-NPM a camel G2574 N-ASM .
25 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , scribes G1122 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-VPM , hypocrites G5273 N-VPM ! for G3754 CONJ ye make clean G2511 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-ASN outside G1855 ADV of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN cup G4221 N-GSN and G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF platter G3953 N-GSF , but G1161 CONJ within G2081 ADV they are full G1073 V-PAI-3P of G1537 PREP extortion G724 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ excess G192 .
26 Thou blind G5185 A-VSM Pharisee G5330 N-VSM , cleanse G2511 V-AAM-2S first G4412 ADV that G3588 T-ASN which G3588 T-ASN is within G1787 ADV the G3588 T-GSN cup G4221 N-GSN and G2532 CONJ platter G3953 N-GSF , that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NSN outside G1622 ADV of them G846 P-GPM may be G1096 V-2ADS-3S clean G2513 A-NSN also G2532 CONJ .

29 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , scribes G1122 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-VPM , hypocrites G5273 N-VPM ! because G3754 CONJ ye build G3618 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-APM tombs G5028 N-APM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM prophets G4396 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ garnish G2885 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-APN sepulchers G3419 N-APN of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM righteous G1342 A-GPM ,
30 And G2532 CONJ say G3004 V-PAI-2P , If G1487 COND we had been G2258 in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF of G3588 T-GPM our G3588 T-GPM fathers G3962 N-GPM , we would not G3756 PRT-N have been G2258 partakers G2844 A-NPM with them G846 P-GPM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN blood G129 N-DSN of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM prophets G4396 N-GPM .
31 Wherefore G5620 CONJ ye be witnesses G3140 V-PAI-2P unto yourselves G1438 F-3DPM , that G3754 CONJ ye are G2075 V-PXI-2P the children G5207 N-NPM of G3588 T-GPM them which killed G5407 V-AAP-GPM the G3588 T-APM prophets G4396 N-APM .
32 Fill ye up G4137 V-AAM-2P then G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASN measure G3358 N-ASN of G3588 T-GPM your G3588 T-GPM fathers G3962 N-GPM .
33 Ye serpents G3789 N-VPM , ye generation G1081 N-VPN of vipers G2191 N-GPF , how G4459 ADV-I can ye escape G5343 V-2AAS-2P the G3588 T-GSF damnation G2920 N-GSF of hell G1067 N-GSF ?
34 Wherefore G1223 PREP , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , I G1473 P-1NS send G649 V-PAI-1S unto G4314 PREP you G5209 P-2AP prophets G4396 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ wise men G4680 A-APM , and G2532 CONJ scribes G1122 N-APM : and G2532 CONJ some of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPM ye shall kill G615 V-FAI-2P and G2532 CONJ crucify G4717 V-FAI-2P ; and G2532 CONJ some of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPM shall ye scourge G3146 V-FAI-2P in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF synagogues G4864 N-DPF , and G2532 CONJ persecute G1377 V-FAI-2P them from G575 PREP city G4172 N-GSF to G1519 PREP city G4172 N-ASF :
35 That G3704 ADV upon G1909 PREP you G5209 P-2AP may come G2064 V-2AAS-3S all G3956 A-NSN the righteous G1342 A-NSN blood G129 N-NSN shed G1632 V-PPP-NSN upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF , from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSN blood G129 N-GSN of righteous G1342 A-GSM Abel G6 N-PRI unto G2193 CONJ the G3588 T-GSN blood G129 N-GSN of Zechariah G2197 N-GSM son G5207 N-GSM of Barachias G914 N-GSM , whom G3739 R-ASM ye slew G5407 V-AAI-2P between G3342 ADV the G3588 T-GSM temple G3485 N-GSM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-GSN altar G2379 N-GSN .
36 Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , All G3956 A-NPN these things G5023 shall come G2240 V-FAI-3S upon G1909 PREP this G3588 T-ASF generation G1074 N-ASF .
37 O Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , thou that killest G615 V-PAP-NSF the G3588 T-APM prophets G4396 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ stonest G3036 V-PAP-NSF them which are sent G649 V-RPP-APM unto G4314 PREP thee G846 P-ASF , how often G4212 ADV would G2309 V-AAI-1S I have gathered thy children together G1996 V-2AAN , even as R-ASM a hen G3733 N-NSM gathereth G1996 V-PAI-3S her G3588 T-APN chickens G3556 N-APN under G5259 PREP her wings G4420 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ ye would G2309 V-AAI-2P not G3756 PRT-N !
38 Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , your G3588 T-NSM house G3624 N-NSM is left G863 V-PPI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP desolate G2048 A-NSM .
39 For G1063 CONJ I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Ye shall not G3364 see G1492 V-2AAS-2P me G3165 P-1AS henceforth G575 PREP , till G2193 CONJ ye shall say G2036 V-2AAS-2P , Blessed G2127 V-RPP-NSM is he that cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSM in G1722 PREP the name G3686 N-DSN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM .
