1 Samuel 20:36 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 David ran away from the camps at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked him, "What have I done wrong? What is my crime? Why is your father trying to kill me?"
2 Jonathan answered, "That can't be true! My father isn't trying to kill you. My father doesn't do anything without first telling me. It doesn't matter how important it is, my father always tells me. Why would my father refuse to tell me that he wants to kill you? No, it is not true!"
3 But David answered, "Your father knows very well that I am your friend. Your father said to himself, 'Jonathan must not know about it. If he knows, he will tell David.' But as surely as you and the Lord are alive, I am very close to death."
4 Jonathan said to David, "I will do anything you want me to do."
5 Then David said, "Look, tomorrow is the New Moon celebration. I am supposed to eat with the king, but let me hide in the field until the evening.
6 If your father notices I am gone, tell him, 'David wanted to go home to Bethlehem. His family is having its own feast for this monthly sacrifice. David asked me to let him run down to Bethlehem and join his family.'
7 If your father says, 'Fine,' then I am safe. But if your father becomes angry, you will know that he wants to hurt me.
8 Jonathan, be kind to me. I am your servant. You have made an agreement with me before the Lord. If I am guilty, you may kill me yourself, but don't take me to your father."
9 Jonathan answered, "No, never! If I learn that my father plans to hurt you, I will warn you."
10 David said, "Who will warn me if your father says bad things to you?"
11 Then Jonathan said, "Come, let's go out into the field." So Jonathan and David went together into the field.
12 Jonathan said to David, "I make this promise before the Lord, the God of Israel. I promise that I will learn how my father feels about you. I will learn if he feels good about you or not. Then, in three days, I will send a message to you in the field.
13 If my father wants to hurt you, I will let you know. I will let you leave in safety. May the Lord punish me if I don't do this. May the Lord be with you as he has been with my father.
14 As long as I live, show me the same kindness the Lord does. And if I die, never stop showing this kindness to my family. Be faithful to us, even when the Lord destroys all your enemies from the earth."

16 So Jonathan made this agreement with David and his family, and he asked the Lord to hold them responsible for keeping it.
17 Jonathan loved David as himself, and because of this love, he asked David to repeat this agreement for himself.
18 Jonathan said to David, "Tomorrow is the New Moon celebration. Your seat will be empty, so my father will see that you are gone.
19 On the third day go to the same place you hid when this trouble began. Wait by that hill.
20 On the third day I will go to that hill and shoot three arrows as if I am shooting at a target.
21 Then I will tell the boy to go find the arrows. If everything is fine, I will tell the boy, 'You went too far! The arrows are closer to me. Come back and get them.' If I say that, you can come out of hiding. I promise, as surely as the Lord lives, you are safe. There is no danger.
22 But if there is trouble, I will say to the boy, 'The arrows are farther away. Go get them.' If I say that, you must leave. The Lord is sending you away.
23 Remember this agreement between you and me. The Lord is our witness forever."
24 Then David hid in the field. The time for the New Moon celebration came, and the king sat down to eat.
25 He sat next to the wall where he usually sat, and Jonathan sat across from him. Abner sat next to Saul, but David's place was empty.
26 That day Saul said nothing. He thought, "Maybe something happened to David so that he is not clean. "
27 On the next day, the second day of the month, David's place was empty again. Then Saul said to his son Jonathan, "Why didn't Jesse's son come to the New Moon celebration yesterday or today?"
28 Jonathan answered, "David asked me to let him go to Bethlehem.
29 He said, 'Let me go. Our family is having a sacrifice in Bethlehem. My brother ordered me to be there. Now if I am your friend, please let me go and see my brothers.' That is why David has not come to the king's table."
30 Saul was very angry with Jonathan and said to him, "You son of a twisted, rebellious woman! I know that you have chosen to support that son of Jesse—it will bring shame to you and to your mother.
31 As long as Jesse's son lives, you will never be king and have a kingdom. Now, bring David to me! He is a dead man."
32 Jonathan asked his father, "Why should David be killed? What did he do wrong?"
33 But Saul threw his spear at Jonathan and tried to kill him. So Jonathan knew that his father wanted very much to kill David.
34 Jonathan became angry and left the table. He was so upset and angry with his father that he refused to eat any food on the second day of the festival. He was angry because Saul humiliated him and because Saul wanted to kill David.
35 The next morning Jonathan went out to the field to meet David as they had agreed. Jonathan brought a little boy with him.
36 He said to the boy, "Run. Go find the arrows I shoot." The boy began to run, and Jonathan shot the arrows over his head.
37 The boy ran to the place where the arrows fell, but Jonathan called, "The arrows are farther away."
38 Then he shouted, "Hurry! Go get them. Don't just stand there." The boy picked up the arrows and brought them back to his master.
39 The boy knew nothing about what went on. Only Jonathan and David knew.
40 Jonathan gave his bow and arrows to the boy and told him to go back to town.
41 When the boy left, David came out from his hiding place on the other side of the hill. David gave a formal greeting by bowing to the ground three times to show his respect for Jonathan. But then David and Jonathan kissed each other and cried together. It was a very sad goodbye, especially for David.
42 Then Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace. We have taken an oath in the Lord's name to be friends forever. We have asked the Lord to be a witness between us and our descendants forever."

2 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , God forbid H2486 IJEC-3FS ; thou shalt not H3808 NADV die H4191 : behold H2009 IJEC , my father H1 CMS-1MS will do H6213 nothing H3808 W-NADV either great H1419 AMS or H176 CONJ small H6996 AMS , but that he will show H3808 NADV it me H241 CFS-1MS : and why H4069 should my father H1 CMS-1MS hide H5641 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 VQPMS from H4480 M-PREP-1MS me ? it H2063 is not H369 NPAR so .
3 And David H1732 MMS swore H7650 moreover H5750 ADV , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thy father H1 NMS certainly knoweth H3045 that H3588 CONJ I have found H4672 VQQ1MS grace H2580 NMS in thine eyes H5869 ; and he saith H559 W-VQY3MS , Let not H408 NPAR Jonathan H3083 know H3045 VQQ3MS this H2063 DPRO , lest H6435 CONJ he be grieved H6087 : but truly H199 W-CONJ as the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , and as thy soul H5315 liveth H2416 , there H3588 CONJ is CONJ but a step H6587 between H996 W-PREP-1MS me and death H4194 .
4 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Jonathan H3083 unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Whatsoever H4100 IPRO thy soul H5315 desireth H559 W-VQY3MS , I will even do H6213 it for thee .
5 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Jonathan H3083 , Behold H2009 , tomorrow H4279 NMS is the new moon H2320 , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS should not fail to sit H3427 with H5973 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS at meat H398 : but let me go H7971 , that I may hide myself H5641 in the field H7704 unto H5704 PREP the third H7992 day at even H6153 .
6 If H518 PART thy father H1 NMS at all miss H6485 me , then say H559 , David H1732 earnestly asked H7592 leave of H4480 M-PREP-1MS me that he might run H7323 to Bethlehem H1035 his city H5892 : for H3588 CONJ there is a yearly H3117 D-NMP sacrifice H2077 NMS there H8033 ADV for all H3605 L-CMS the family H4940 .
7 If H518 PART he say H559 VQY3MS thus H3541 , It is well H2896 AMS ; thy servant H5650 shall have peace H7965 NMS : but if H518 PART he be very wroth H2734 , then be sure H3045 that H3588 CONJ evil H7451 D-AFS is determined H3615 by him .
8 Therefore thou shalt deal H6213 kindly H2617 NMS with H5921 PREP thy servant H5650 ; for H3588 CONJ thou hast brought H935 thy servant H5650 into a covenant H1285 of the LORD H3068 EDS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee : notwithstanding , if H518 W-PART there be H3426 ADV in me iniquity H5771 NMS , slay H4191 me thyself H859 PPRO-2MS ; for H5704 W-PREP why H4100 L-IPRO shouldest thou bring H935 me to thy father H1 NMS ?
9 And Jonathan H3083 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Far be it H2486 IJEC-3FS from thee : for H3588 CONJ if H518 PART I knew certainly H3045 that H3588 CONJ evil H7451 D-AFS were determined H3615 by M-PREP my father H1 CMS-1MS to come H935 L-VQFC upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee , then would not H3808 W-NPAR I tell H5046 VHY3MS it thee ?
10 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS David H1732 MMS to H413 PREP Jonathan H3083 , Who H4310 IPRO shall tell H5046 VHY3MS me ? or H176 CONJ what H4100 IPRO if thy father H1 NMS answer H6030 thee roughly H7186 ?
11 And Jonathan H3083 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Come H1980 VQI2MS-3FS , and let us go out H3318 into the field H7704 D-NMS . And they went out H3318 W-VQY3MP both H8147 ONUM-3MP of them into the field H7704 D-NMS .
12 And Jonathan H3083 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , when H3588 CONJ I have sounded H2713 my father H1 CMS-1MS about tomorrow H4279 NMS any time H6256 KD-NMS , or the third H7992 day , and , behold H2009 IJEC , if there be good H2896 AMS toward H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , and I then H227 ADV send H7971 not H3808 W-NPAR unto H413 PREP thee , and show it thee H1540 ;
13 The LORD H3068 EDS do H6213 VQY3MS so H3541 and much H3541 more H3254 VHY3MS to Jonathan H3083 : but if H3588 CONJ it please H3190 my father H1 CMS-1MS to do thee evil H7451 D-AFS , then I will show it thee H1540 , and send thee away H7971 , that thou mayest go H1980 in peace H7965 : and the LORD H3068 EDS be H1961 W-VQI3MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee , as H834 K-RPRO he hath been H1961 VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP my father H1 .
14 And thou shalt not H3808 W-NPAR only while H518 PART yet H5750 I live H2416 AMS show H6213 me the kindness H2617 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , that I die H4191 not H3808 W-NPAR :
15 But also thou shalt not H3808 W-NPAR cut off H3772 thy kindness H2617 from M-PREP my house H1004 CMS-1MS forever H5704 PREP : no , not H3808 W-NPAR when the LORD H3068 EDS hath cut off H3772 the enemies H341 of David H1732 every one H376 NMS from the face H5921 M-PREP of the earth H127 D-NFS .
16 So Jonathan H3083 made H3772 a covenant with H5973 PREP the house H1004 CMS of David H1732 MMS , saying , Let the LORD H3068 EDS even require H1245 it at the hand H3027 M-GFS of David H1732 \'s enemies H341 .
17 And Jonathan H3083 caused David H1732 MMS to swear H7650 again H3254 , because he loved H160 him : for H3588 CONJ he loved H157 him as he loved H160 his own soul H5315 NMS-3MS .
18 Then Jonathan H3083 said H559 to David , Tomorrow H4279 NMS is the new moon H2320 : and thou shalt be missed H6485 , because H3588 CONJ thy seat H4186 will be empty H6485 .
19 And when thou hast stayed three days H8027 , then thou shalt go down H3381 quickly H3966 ADV , and come H935 W-VQQ2MS to H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS where H834 RPRO thou didst hide thyself H5641 when H8033 the business H4639 was in hand , and shalt remain H3427 by H681 the stone H68 Ezel H237 .
20 And I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will shoot H3384 VHY1MS three H7969 BMS arrows H2671 on the side H6654 thereof , as though I shot H7971 at a mark H4307 L-NFS .
21 And , behold H2009 IJEC , I will send H7971 a lad H5288 , saying , Go H1980 VQI2MS , find out H4672 the arrows H2671 . If H518 PART I expressly say H559 unto the lad H5288 , Behold H2009 IJEC , the arrows H2671 are on this side H2008 of thee , take H3947 them ; then come H935 thou : for H3588 CONJ there is peace H7965 NMS to thee , and no H369 W-NPAR hurt H1697 VQPMS ; as the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS liveth H2416 AMS .
22 But if H518 W-PART I say H559 VQY1MS thus H3541 unto the young man H5958 , Behold H2009 IJEC , the arrows H2671 are beyond H1973 thee ; go thy way H1980 VQI2MS : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hath sent thee away H7971 .
23 And as touching the matter H1697 which H834 RPRO thou H859 and I H589 PPRO-1MS have spoken H1696 of , behold H2009 IJEC , the LORD H3068 EDS be between H996 W-PREP-1MS thee and me forever H5704 PREP .
24 So David H1732 MMS hid himself H5641 in the field H7704 B-NMS : and when the new moon H2320 D-NMS was come H1961 W-VQY3MS , the king H4428 D-NMS sat him down H3427 W-VQY3MS to eat H398 meat H3899 .
25 And the king H4428 D-NMS sat H3427 W-VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP his seat H4186 , as at other times H6471 , even upon H413 PREP a seat H4186 by the wall H7023 : and Jonathan H3083 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and Abner H74 sat H3427 W-VQY3MS by Saul H7586 \'s side H6654 , and David H1732 \'s place H4725 CMS was empty H6485 .
26 Nevertheless Saul H7586 spoke H1696 not H3808 ADV any thing H3972 NMS that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS : for H3588 CONJ he thought H559 VQQ3MS , Something hath befallen H4745 him , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is not H1115 PREP clean H2889 AMS ; surely H3588 CONJ he is not H3808 NADV clean H2889 .
27 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS on the morrow H4283 , which was the second H8145 D-ONUM day of the month H2320 D-NMS , that David H1732 MMS \'s place H4725 CMS was empty H6485 : and Saul H7586 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 CMS-3MS , Wherefore H4069 IPRO cometh H935 not H3808 NADV the son H1121 CMS of Jesse H3448 to H413 PREP meat H3899 , neither H1571 CONJ yesterday H8543 , nor H1571 CONJ today H3117 D-AMS ?
28 And Jonathan H3083 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS Saul H7586 , David H1732 MMS earnestly asked H7592 leave of me to go to H5704 PREP Bethlehem H1035 :
29 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let me go H7971 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC ; for H3588 CONJ our family H4940 hath a sacrifice H2077 NMS in the city H5892 BD-NFS ; and my brother H251 , he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS hath commanded H6680 me to be there : and now H6258 W-ADV , if H518 PART I have found H4672 VQQ1MS favor H2580 NMS in thine eyes H5869 , let me get away H4422 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and see H7200 my brethren H251 . 30 Then Saul H7586 \'s anger H639 CMS was kindled H2734 against Jonathan H3083 , and he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Thou son H1121 of the perverse H5753 rebellious H4780 woman , do not H3808 D-NPAR I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast chosen H977 the son H1121 of Jesse H3448 to thine own confusion H1322 , and unto the confusion H1322 of thy mother H517 CFS-2MS \'s nakedness H6172 CFS ?
31 For H3588 CONJ as long H3605 CMS as H834 RPRO the son H1121 CMS of Jesse H3448 liveth H2416 upon H5921 PREP the ground H127 D-NFS , thou H859 PPRO-2MS shalt not H3808 NADV be established H3559 , nor thy kingdom H4438 . Wherefore now H6258 W-ADV send H7971 and fetch H3947 him unto H413 PREP-1MS me , for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall surely die H1121 CMS .
32 And Jonathan H3083 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS Saul H7586 his father H1 CMS-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO shall he be slain H4191 ? what H4100 L-IPRO hath he done H6213 VQQ3MS ?
33 And Saul H7586 cast H2904 a javelin H2595 at H5921 PREP-3MS him to smite H5221 him : whereby Jonathan H3083 knew H3045 W-VQY3MS that H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3FS was determined H3615 of M-PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS to slay H4191 David H1732 .
34 So Jonathan H3083 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS from M-PREP the table H7979 in fierce H2750 anger H639 NMS , and did eat H398 VQQ3MS no H3808 W-NPAR meat H3899 NMS the second H8145 D-ONUM day H3117 B-NMS of the month H2320 D-NMS : for H3588 CONJ he was grieved H6087 for H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , because H3588 CONJ his father H1 had done him shame H3637 .
35 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 , that Jonathan H3083 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS into the field H7704 D-NMS at the time appointed H4150 with David H1732 MMS , and a little H6996 AMS lad H5288 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
36 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto his lad H5288 , Run H7323 , find out H4672 now H4994 IJEC the arrows H2671 which H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS shoot H3384 . And as the lad H5288 ran H7323 VQPMS , he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shot H3384 VQQ3MS an arrow H2678 beyond H5674 him .
37 And when the lad H5288 was come H935 W-VQY3MS to H5704 PREP the place H4725 CMS of the arrow H2678 which H834 RPRO Jonathan H3083 had shot H3384 VQQ3MS , Jonathan H3083 cried H7121 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP the lad H5288 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is not H3808 D-NPAR the arrow H2678 beyond H1973 thee ?
38 And Jonathan H3083 cried H7121 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP the lad H5288 , Make speed H2363 , haste H4120 , stay H5975 not H408 ADV . And Jonathan H3083 \'s lad H5288 gathered up H3950 the arrows H2678 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP his master H113 .
39 But the lad H5288 knew H3045 VQQ3MS not H3808 ADV any thing H3972 NMS : only H389 ADV Jonathan H3083 and David H1732 knew H3045 VQQ3MP the matter H1697 .
40 And Jonathan H3083 gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS his artillery H3627 unto H413 PREP his H834 RPRO lad H5288 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Go H1980 VQI2MS , carry H935 them to the city H5892 D-GFS .
41 And as soon as the lad H5288 was gone H935 VQPMS , David H1732 arose H6965 out of a place toward H681 the south H5045 D-NMS , and fell H5307 W-VQY3MS on his face H639 to the ground H776 NFS-3FS , and bowed himself H7812 three H7969 MFS times H6471 NFP : and they kissed H5401 one H376 NMS another H7453 NMS-3MS , and wept H1058 W-VQY3MP one H376 NMS with H854 another H7453 NMS-3MS , until H5704 PREP David H1732 MMS exceeded H1431 .
42 And Jonathan H3083 said H559 W-VQY3MS to David H1732 L-NAME , Go H1980 VQI2MS in peace H7965 , forasmuch as H834 RPRO we have sworn H7650 both H8147 of us H587 PPRO-1MP in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , The LORD H3068 EDS be H1961 VQY3MS between H996 W-PREP-1MS me and thee , and between H996 W-PREP my seed H2233 and thy seed H2233 CMS-2MS forever H5704 PREP . And he arose H6965 and departed H1980 VQI2MS : and Jonathan H3083 went H935 into the city H5892 .
