1 One day, some of the elders of Israel came to me to ask the Lord for advice. This was on the tenth day of the fifth month, of the seventh year of exile. The elders sat down in front of me.

2 Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said,

3 "Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel. Tell them 'This is what the Lord God says: Have you come to ask me advice? If you have, I will not give it to you.'

4 Should you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? You must tell them about the terrible things their fathers have done.

5 You must tell them, 'This is what the Lord God says: On the day I chose Israel, I raised my hand to Jacob's family and made a promise to them in Egypt. When I let them know who I was, I raised my hand and said: "I am the Lord your God."

6 On that day, I promised to take you out of Egypt and lead you to the land I was giving to you. That was a good land filled with many good things. It was the most beautiful of all countries!"

7 "'I told the family of Israel to throw away their horrible idols. I told them not to become filthy with those filthy statues from Egypt. I said, "I am the Lord your God."

8 But they turned against me and refused to listen to me. They did not throw away their horrible idols. They did not leave their filthy statues in Egypt. So I decided to destroy them in Egypt—to let them feel the full force of my anger.

9 But I did not destroy them. I had already told the Egyptians that I would bring my people out of Egypt. I did not want to ruin my good name, so I did not destroy Israel in front of those other people.

10 I brought the family of Israel out of Egypt. I led them into the desert.

11 Then I gave them my laws and told them all my rules. Whoever obeys them will live.

12 I also told them about all the special days of rest, which were a special sign between us. They showed that I am the Lord and that I was making them special to me.

13 "'But the family of Israel turned against me in the desert. They did not follow my laws. They refused to obey my rules—even though people who obey my laws live because of them. They treated my special days of rest as if they were not important. They worked on those days many times. I decided to destroy them in the desert—to let them feel the full force of my anger.

14 But I did not destroy them. The other nations saw me bring Israel out of Egypt. I did not want to ruin my good name, so I did not destroy Israel in front of those other people.

15 I made another promise to those people in the desert. I promised that I would not bring them into the land I was giving them. That was a good land filled with many good things. It was the most beautiful of all countries!

16 "'The people of Israel refused to obey my rules or to follow my laws. They treated my days of rest as if they were not important. They did all these things because their hearts belonged to their filthy idols.

17 But I felt sorry for them, so I did not destroy them. I did not completely destroy them in the desert.

18 I spoke to their children and told them, "Don't be like your parents. Don't make yourself filthy with their filthy idols. Don't follow their laws or obey their commands.

19 I am the Lord. I am your God. Obey my laws and keep my commands. Do the things I tell you.

20 Show that my days of rest are important to you. Remember, they are a special sign between us. I am the Lord, and these days show you that I am your God."

21 "'But the children turned against me and did not obey my laws. They did not keep my commands—even though people who obey my laws live because of them. They treated my special days of rest as though they were not important. So I decided to destroy them completely in the desert, to let them feel the full force of my anger.

22 But I stopped myself. The other nations saw me bring Israel out of Egypt. I did not want to ruin my good name, so I did not destroy Israel in front of those other people.

23 So I made another promise to those people in the desert. I promised to scatter them among the nations, to send them to many different countries.

24 "'The people of Israel did not obey my commands. They refused to obey my laws. They treated my special days of rest as though they were not important, and they worshiped the filthy idols of their fathers.

25 So I gave them laws that were not good. I gave them commands that would not bring life.

26 I let them make themselves filthy with their gifts. They even began to sacrifice their own firstborn children. In this way I would destroy them. Then they would know that I am the Lord.'

27 So now, son of man, speak to the family of Israel. Tell them, 'This is what the Lord God says: The people of Israel said bad things about me and made evil plans against me.

28 But I still brought them to the land I promised to give them. They saw all the hills and green trees, so they went to all those places to worship. They took their sacrifices and anger offerings to all those places. They offered their sacrifices that made a sweet smell, and they offered their drink offerings at those places.

29 I asked the people of Israel why they were going to the high places. But that high place is still there today. '

30 "Since Israel did those things, speak to them and tell them, 'This is what the Lord God says: You people have made yourselves filthy by doing the things your ancestors did. You have acted like a prostitute. You have left me to be with the horrible gods your ancestors worshiped.

31 You are giving the same kind of gifts. You are putting your children in the fire as a gift to your false gods. You are still making yourself filthy with these filthy idols today! Do you really think that I should let you come to me and ask me for advice? I am the Lord God Lord. By my life, I swear that I will not answer your questions or give you advice!

32 You keep saying you want to be like the other nations. You live like the people in other nations. You serve pieces of wood and stone idols!'"

33 The Lord God says, "By my life, I swear that I will rule over you as king. But I will raise my powerful arm and punish you. I will show my anger against you!

34 I will bring you out of these other nations. I scattered you among these nations, but I will gather you together and bring you back from these countries. But I will raise my powerful arm and punish you. I will show my anger against you!

35 I will lead you into a desert as I did before, but this will be a place where other nations live. We will stand face to face, and I will judge you.

36 I will judge you as I judged your ancestors in the desert near Egypt." This is what the Lord God said.

37 "I will judge you guilty and punish you according to the agreement.

38 I will remove all those who turned against me and sinned against me. I will remove them from your homeland. They will never again come to the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord."

39 Now, family of Israel, this is what the Lord God says: "Whoever wants to worship their filthy idols, let them go and worship them. But later, don't think you will get any advice from me. You will not ruin my name anymore! Not when you continue to give your gifts to your filthy idols."

40 The Lord God says, "People must come to my holy mountain—the high mountain in Israel—to serve me! The whole family of Israel will be on their land—they will be there in their country. There you can come to ask me for advice, and you must come there to bring me your offerings. You must bring the first part of your crops to me there. You must bring all your holy gifts to me in that place.

41 Then I will be pleased with the sweet smell of your sacrifices. That will happen when I bring you back. I scattered you among many nations, but I will gather you together and make you my special people again, and all the nations will see it.

42 Then you will know that I am the Lord. You will know this when I bring you back to the land of Israel, the land I promised to give to your ancestors.

43 In that country you will remember all the evil things you did that made you filthy, and you will be ashamed.

44 Family of Israel, you did many evil things, and you should be destroyed because of them. But to protect my good name, I will not give you the punishment you really deserve. Then you will know that I am the Lord." This is what the Lord God said.

45 Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said,

46 "Son of man, look toward the Negev, the southern part of Judah. Speak against the Negev Forest.

47 Say to the Negev Forest, 'Listen to the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord God said: Look, I am ready to start a fire in your forest. The fire will destroy every green tree and every dry tree. The flame that burns will not be put out. All the land from south to north will be burned by the fire.

48 Then all people will see that I, the Lord, have started the fire. The fire will not be put out!'"

49 Then I said, "Oh, Lord God! If I say this, the people will say that I am only telling them stories."

3 Son ^H1121 of man ^H120 ^NMS , speak ^H1696 ^VPFC unto the elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 , and say ^H559 unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS them , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 ; Are ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS come ^H935 to inquire ^H1875 of me ? As I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS live ^H2416 ^AMS , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 , I will not ^H518 ^PART be inquired ^H1875 of by you .

4 Wilt thou judge ^H8199 them , son ^H1121 of man ^H120 ^NMS , wilt thou judge ^H8199 them ? cause them to know ^H3045 the abominations ^H8441 of their fathers ^H1 ^CMP-3MP :

5 And say ^H559 unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MP them , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 ; In the day ^H3117 ^B-NMS when I chose ^H977 Israel ^H3478 , and lifted up ^H5375 mine hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS unto the seed ^H2233 of the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Jacob ^H3290 , and made myself known ^H3045 unto them in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 , when I lifted up ^H5375 mine hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS unto them , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS your God ^H430 ;

6 In the day ^H3117 that I lifted up ^H5375 mine hand ^H3027 unto them , to bring them forth ^H3318 of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 into ^H413 a land ^H776 that ^H834 I had espied ^H8446 for them , flowing ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 and honey ^H1706 , which ^H1931 is the glory ^H6643 of all ^H3605 lands ^H776 :

7 Then said ^H559 I unto ^H413 them , Cast ye away ^H7993 every man ^H376 the abominations ^H8251 of his eyes ^H5869 , and defile not yourselves ^H2930 with the idols ^H1544 of Egypt ^H4714 : I ^H589 am the LORD ^H3068 your God ^H430 .

8 But they rebelled ^H4784 against me , and would ^H14 ^VQQ3MP not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR hearken ^H8085 unto ^H413 ^PREP-1MS me : they did not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR every man ^H376 ^NMS cast away ^H7993 the abominations ^H8251 of their eyes ^H5869 , neither ^H3808 ^W-NPAR did they forsake ^H5800 the idols ^H1544 of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS : then I said ^H559 ^W-VQY1MS , I will pour out ^H8210 my fury ^H2534 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them , to accomplish ^H3615 my anger ^H639 ^CMS-1MS against them in the midst ^H8432 ^B-NMS of the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

9 But I wrought ^H6213 for my name\'s sake ^H4616 ^L-CONJ , that it should not ^H1115 ^L-NPAR be polluted ^H2490 ^VHQ3MS before ^H5869 the heathen ^H1471 ^D-NMP , among ^H8432 whom ^H834 ^RPRO they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP were , in whose ^H834 ^RPRO sight ^H5869 I made myself known ^H3045 unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MP them , in bringing them forth ^H3318 out of the land ^H776 ^M-NFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

10 Wherefore I caused them to go ^H3318 out of the land ^H776 ^M-NFS of Egypt ^H4714 , and brought ^H935 them into ^H413 ^PREP the wilderness ^H4057 ^D-NMS .

11 And I gave ^H5414 them my statutes ^H2708 , and showed ^H3045 them my judgments ^H4941 , which ^H834 ^RPRO if a man ^H120 ^D-NMS do ^H6213 ^VQY3MS , he shall even live ^H2421 in them .

12 Moreover also ^H1571 ^W-CONJ I gave ^H5414 ^VQQ1MS them my sabbaths ^H7676 , to be ^H1961 a sign ^H226 ^L-CMS between ^H996 ^W-PREP-1MS me and them , that they might know ^H3045 ^L-VQFC that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS that sanctify ^H6942 them .

13 But the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 rebelled ^H4784 against me in the wilderness ^H4057 : they walked ^H1980 not ^H3808 ^NADV in my statutes ^H2708 , and they despised ^H3988 my judgments ^H4941 , which ^H834 ^RPRO if a man ^H120 ^D-NMS do ^H6213 ^VQY3MS , he shall even live ^H2421 in them ; and my sabbaths ^H7676 they greatly ^H3966 ^ADV polluted ^H2490 : then I said ^H559 ^W-VQY1MS , I would pour out ^H8210 my fury ^H2534 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them in the wilderness ^H4057 , to consume ^H3615 them .

14 But I wrought ^H6213 for my name\'s sake ^H4616 ^L-CONJ , that it should not ^H1115 ^L-NPAR be polluted ^H2490 ^VHQ3MS before ^H5869 the heathen ^H1471 ^D-NMP , in whose ^H834 ^RPRO sight ^H5869 ^L-CMD-3MP I brought them out ^H3318 .

15 Yet also ^H1571 ^W-CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS lifted up ^H5375 ^VQQ1MS my hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS unto them in the wilderness ^H4057 , that I would not ^H1115 ^L-NPAR bring ^H935 them into ^H413 ^PREP the land ^H776 ^D-GFS which ^H834 ^RPRO I had given ^H5414 ^VQQ1MS them , flowing ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 ^NMS and honey ^H1706 , which ^H1931 ^PPRO-3FS is the glory ^H6643 of all ^H3605 ^L-CMS lands ^H776 ;

16 Because ^H3282 ^ADV they despised ^H3988 my judgments ^H4941 , and walked ^H1980 ^VQQ3MP not ^H3808 ^NADV in my statutes ^H2708 , but polluted ^H2490 my sabbaths ^H7676 : for ^H3588 ^CONJ their heart ^H3820 ^CMS-3MP went ^H1980 ^VQPMS after ^H310 ^PREP their idols ^H1544 .

17 Nevertheless mine eye ^H5869 ^CMS-1MS spared ^H2347 them from destroying ^H7843 them , neither ^H3808 ^W-NPAR did I make ^H6213 ^VQQ1MS an end ^H3617 of them in the wilderness ^H4057 .

18 But I said ^H559 ^W-VQY1MS unto ^H413 ^PREP their children ^H1121 in the wilderness ^H4057 , Walk ^H1980 ye not ^H408 ^NPAR in the statutes ^H2706 of your fathers ^H1 , neither ^H408 ^NPAR observe ^H8104 their judgments ^H4941 , nor ^H408 ^NPAR defile yourselves ^H2930 with their idols ^H1544 :

19 I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS your God ^H430 ; walk ^H1980 in my statutes ^H2708 , and keep ^H8104 my judgments ^H4941 , and do ^H6213 them ;

20 And hallow ^H6942 my sabbaths ^H7676 ; and they shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS a sign ^H226 ^L-CMS between ^H996 ^W-PREP-1MS me and you , that ye may know ^H3045 ^L-VQFC that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS your God ^H430 .

21 Notwithstanding the children ^H1121 rebelled ^H4784 against me : they walked ^H1980 not ^H3808 ^ADV in my statutes ^H2708 , neither ^H3808 ^NADV kept ^H8104 my judgments ^H4941 to do ^H6213 ^L-VQFC them , which ^H834 ^RPRO if a man ^H120 ^D-NMS do ^H6213 ^VQY3MS , he shall even live ^H2421 in them ; they polluted ^H2490 my sabbaths ^H7676 : then I said ^H559 ^W-VQY1MS , I would pour out ^H8210 my fury ^H2534 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them , to accomplish ^H3615 my anger ^H639 ^CMS-1MS against them in the wilderness ^H4057 .

22 Nevertheless I withdrew ^H7725 mine hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS , and wrought ^H6213 for my name\'s sake ^H4616 ^L-CONJ , that it should not ^H1115 ^L-NPAR be polluted ^H2490 ^VHQ3MS in the sight ^H5869 of the heathen ^H1471 ^D-NMP , in whose ^H834 ^RPRO sight ^H5869 ^L-CMD-3MP I brought them forth .

23 I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS lifted up ^H5375 ^VQQ1MS mine hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS unto them also ^H1571 ^CONJ in the wilderness ^H4057 , that I would scatter ^H6327 them among the heathen ^H1471 , and disperse ^H2219 them through the countries ^H776 ;

24 Because ^H3282 ^ADV they had not ^H3808 ^ADV executed ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP my judgments ^H4941 , but had despised ^H3988 my statutes ^H2708 , and had polluted ^H2490 my sabbaths ^H7676 , and their eyes ^H5869 were ^H1961 ^VQQ3MP after ^H310 their fathers ^H1 ^CMP-3MP \' idols ^H1544 .

25 Wherefore I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS gave ^H5414 ^VQQ1MS them also ^H1571 ^W-CONJ statutes ^H2706 that were not ^H3808 ^NADV good ^H2896 , and judgments ^H4941 whereby they should not ^H3808 ^NADV live ^H2421 ;

26 And I polluted ^H2930 them in their own gifts ^H4979 , in that they caused to pass through ^H5674 the fire all ^H3605 ^NMS that openeth ^H6363 the womb ^H7356 , that ^H4616 ^L-CONJ I might make them desolate ^H8074 , to the end ^H4616 ^L-CONJ that ^H834 ^RPRO they might know ^H3045 that ^H834 ^RPRO I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

27 Therefore ^H3651 ^L-ADV , son ^H1121 of man ^H120 ^NMS , speak ^H1696 ^VPFC unto ^H413 ^PREP the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 , and say ^H559 unto ^H413 ^PREP them , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 ; Yet ^H5750 ^ADV in this ^H2063 ^DPRO your fathers ^H1 have blasphemed ^H1442 me , in that they have committed ^H4603 a trespass ^H4604 against me .

28 For when I had brought ^H935 them into ^H413 ^PREP the land ^H776 ^D-GFS , for the which ^H834 ^RPRO I lifted up ^H5375 ^VQQ1MS mine hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS to give ^H5414 ^L-VQFC it to them , then they saw ^H7200 ^W-VQY3MP every ^H3605 ^CMS high ^H7311 ^VQPFS hill ^H1389 , and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS the thick ^H5687 trees ^H6086 ^NMS , and they offered ^H2076 there ^H8033 ^ADV their sacrifices ^H2077 , and there ^H8033 ^ADV they presented ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MP the provocation ^H3708 of their offering ^H7133 : there ^H8033 ^ADV also they made ^H7760 ^W-VQY3MP their sweet ^H5207 savor ^H7381 ^CMS , and poured out ^H5258 there ^H8033 ^ADV their drink offerings ^H5262 .

29 Then I said ^H559 ^W-VQY1MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS them , What ^H4100 ^IGAT is the high place ^H1116 whereunto ^H834 ^RPRO ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS go ^H935 ? And the name ^H8034 ^CMS-3FS thereof is called ^H7121 Bamah ^H1117 unto ^H5704 ^PREP this ^H2088 ^D-PMS day ^H3117 ^D-AMS .

30 Wherefore ^H3651 ^L-ADV say ^H559 unto ^H413 ^PREP the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 ; Are ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS polluted ^H2930 after the manner ^H1870 of your fathers ^H1 ? and commit ye whoredom ^H2181 after ^H310 their abominations ^H8251 ?

31 For when ye offer ^H5375 your gifts ^H4979 , when ye make your sons ^H1121 to pass ^H5674 through the fire ^H784 , ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS pollute yourselves ^H2930 with all ^H3605 ^L-CMS your idols ^H1544 , even unto ^H5704 ^PREP this day ^H3117 ^D-AMS : and shall I ^H589 ^W-PPRO-1MS be inquired of ^H1875 by you , O house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 ? As I ^H589 ^W-PPRO-1MS live ^H2416 ^AMS , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 , I will not ^H518 ^PART be inquired of ^H1875 by you .

32 And that which cometh ^H5927 into ^H5921 ^PREP your mind ^H7307 shall not ^H3808 ^NADV be at all ^H1961 , that ^H834 ^RPRO ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS say ^H559 , We will be ^H1961 as the heathen ^H1471 , as the families ^H4940 of the countries ^H776 , to serve ^H8334 wood ^H6086 ^NMS and stone ^H68 .

33 As I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS live ^H2416 ^AMS , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 , surely ^H518 ^PART with a mighty ^H2389 hand ^H3027 , and with a stretched out ^H5186 arm ^H2220 , and with fury ^H2534 poured out ^H8210 , will I rule ^H4427 over ^H5921 ^PREP-2MP you :

34 And I will bring you out ^H3318 from ^H4480 ^PREP the people ^H5971 , and will gather ^H6908 you out of ^H4480 ^PREP the countries ^H776 wherein ^H834 ^RPRO ye are scattered ^H6327 , with a mighty ^H2389 hand ^H3027 , and with a stretched out ^H5186 arm ^H2220 , and with fury ^H2534 poured out ^H8210 .

35 And I will bring ^H935 you into ^H413 ^PREP the wilderness ^H4057 of the people ^H5971 , and there ^H8033 ^ADV will I plead ^H8199 with ^H854 ^PART-2MP you face ^H6440 ^NMP to ^H413 ^PREP face ^H6440 .

36 Like as ^H834 ^K-RPRO I pleaded ^H8199 with ^H854 ^PREP your fathers ^H1 in the wilderness ^H4057 of the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 , so ^H3651 ^ADV will I plead ^H8199 with ^H854 ^PART-2MP you , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 .

37 And I will cause you to pass ^H5674 under ^H8478 ^NMS the rod ^H7626 , and I will bring ^H935 you into the bond ^H4562 of the covenant ^H1285 :

38 And I will purge out ^H1305 from ^H4480 ^M-PPRO-2MS among you the rebels ^H4775 , and them that transgress ^H6586 against me : I will bring them forth out of the country ^H776 ^M-NFS where they sojourn ^H4033 , and they shall not ^H3808 ^NADV enter ^H935 ^VQY3MS into ^H413 ^W-PREP the land ^H127 of Israel ^H3478 : and ye shall know ^H3045 that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

39 As for you ^H859 ^W-PPRO-2MP , O house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 , thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 ; Go ^H1980 ^VQI2MP ye , serve ^H5647 ye every one ^H376 ^NMS his idols ^H1544 , and hereafter ^H310 ^W-ADV also , if ^H518 ^PART ye will not ^H369 hearken ^H8085 unto ^H413 me : but pollute ^H2490 ye my holy ^H6944 name ^H8034 ^CMS no ^H3808 ^NADV more ^H5750 ^ADV with your gifts ^H4979 , and with your idols ^H1544 .

48 And all ^H3605 ^NMS flesh ^H1320 ^NMS shall see ^H7200 that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS have kindled ^H1197 it : it shall not ^H3808 ^NADV be quenched ^H3518 .

49 Then said ^H559 ^W-VQY1MS I , Ah ^H162 Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 ! they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP say ^H559 of me , Doth he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS not ^H3808 ^I-NADV speak ^H4911 parables ^H4912 ?
