Exodus 20 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Then God said,
2 "I am the Lord your God. I led you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves. These are the commands I give you:
3 "You must not worship any other gods except me.
4 "You must not make any idols. Don't make any statues or pictures of anything up in the sky or of anything on the earth or of anything down in the water.
5 Don't worship or serve idols of any kind, because I, the Lord, am your God. I hate my people worshiping other gods. People who sin against me become my enemies, and I will punish them. And I will punish their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren.
6 But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations.
7 "You must not use the name of the Lord your God to make empty promises. If you do, the Lord will not let you go unpunished.
8 "You must remember to keep the Sabbath a special day.
9 You may work six days a week to do your job.
10 But the seventh day is a day of rest in honor of the Lord your God. So on that day no one should work—not you, your sons and daughters, or your men and women slaves. Even your animals and the foreigners living in your cities must not work!
11 That is because the Lord worked six days and made the sky, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. And on the seventh day, he rested. In this way the Lord blessed the Sabbath—the day of rest. He made that a very special day.
12 "You must honor and respect your father and your mother. Do this so that you will have a full life in the land that the Lord your God gives you.
13 "You must not murder anyone.
14 "You must not commit adultery.
15 "You must not steal anything.
16 "You must not tell lies about other people.
17 "You must not want to take your neighbor's house. You must not want his wife. And you must not want his men and women servants or his cattle or donkeys. You must not want to take anything that belongs to another person."
18 During all this time, the people in the valley heard the thundering and saw the lightning on the mountain. They saw smoke rising from the mountain and heard the sound of the trumpet. They were afraid and shook with fear. They stood away from the mountain and watched.
19 Then the people said to Moses, "If you want to speak to us, then we will listen. But please don't let God speak to us. If this happens, we will die."
20 Then Moses said to them, "Don't be afraid! God has come to test you. He wants you to respect him so that you will not sin."
21 The people stood far away from the mountain while Moses went to the dark cloud where God was.
22 Then the Lord told Moses to say this to the Israelites: "You people have seen that I talked with you from heaven.
23 So you must not make idols using gold or silver to compete with me. You must not make these false gods.
24 "Make a special altar for me. You should use dirt to make this altar. Offer sheep and cattle as burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on this altar. Do this in every place where I tell you to remember me. Then I will come and bless you.
25 But if you use stones to make an altar, then don't use stones that were cut with an iron tool. If you do that, it will make the altar unacceptable.
26 And you must not make steps leading up to the altar. If there are steps, when people look up to the altar, they will be able to see under your clothes."

3 Thou shalt have H1961 no H3808 ADV other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP before H5921 PREP me .
4 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV make H6213 unto thee any graven image H6459 , or any H3605 W-CMS likeness H8544 NFS of any thing that H834 RPRO is in heaven H8064 BD-NMP above H4605 , or that H834 RPRO is in the earth H776 B-NFS beneath H8478 M-CFS , or that H834 RPRO is in the water H4325 BD-NMP under H8478 M-CFS the earth H776 :
5 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV bow down thyself H7812 to them , nor H3808 W-NADV serve H5647 them : for H3588 CONJ I H595 the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS am a jealous H7067 God H410 EDS , visiting H6485 the iniquity H5771 of the fathers H1 upon H5921 PREP the children H1121 NMP unto H5921 PREP the third H8029 and fourth H7256 generation of them that hate H8130 me ;
6 And showing H6213 mercy H2617 NMS unto thousands H505 of them that love H157 me , and keep H8104 my commandments H4687 .
7 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV take H5375 VQY2MS the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS in vain H7723 ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS will not H3808 NADV hold him guiltless H5352 that H834 RPRO taketh H5375 VQY3MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS in vain H7723 .
8 Remember H2142 the sabbath H7676 day H3117 NMS , to keep it holy H6942 .
9 Six H8337 days H3117 NMP shalt thou labor H5647 , and do H6213 all H3605 NMS thy work H4399 :
10 But the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 W-NMS is the sabbath H7676 of the LORD H3068 L-EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS : in it thou shalt not H3808 ADV do H6213 any H3605 CMS work H4399 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS , nor thy son H1121 , nor thy daughter H1323 , thy manservant H5650 , nor thy maidservant H519 , nor thy cattle H929 , nor thy stranger H1616 that H834 RPRO is within thy gates H8179 :
11 For H3588 CONJ in six H8337 days H3117 NUM-MS the LORD H3068 EDS made H6213 VQQ3MS heaven H8064 D-NMD and earth H776 D-GFS , the sea H3220 D-NMS , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO in them is , and rested H5117 the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 BD-NMS : wherefore H3651 ADV the LORD H3068 EDS blessed H1288 VPQ3MS the sabbath H7676 day H3117 NMS , and hallowed H6942 it .
12 Honor H3513 thy father H1 NMS and thy mother H517 : that H4616 L-CONJ thy days H3117 CMP-2MS may be long H748 upon H5921 PREP the land H127 D-NFS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS giveth H5414 VQPMS thee .
13 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV kill H7523 .
14 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV commit adultery H5003 .
15 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV steal H1589 .
16 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV bear H6030 false H8267 witness H5707 against thy neighbor H7453 .
17 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV covet H2530 thy neighbor H7453 \'s house H1004 CMS , thou shalt not H3808 ADV covet H2530 thy neighbor H7453 \'s wife H802 CFS , nor his manservant H5650 , nor his maidservant H519 , nor his ox H7794 , nor his ass H2543 , nor any thing H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO is thy neighbor H7453 \'s .
18 And all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the thunderings H6963 , and the lightnings H3940 , and the noise H6963 CMS of the trumpet H7782 , and the mountain H2022 smoking H6226 : and when the people H5971 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS it , they removed H5128 , and stood H5975 afar off H7350 .
19 And they said H559 unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Speak H1696 VPFC thou H859 PPRO-2MS with H5973 PREP-1MP us , and we will hear H8085 : but let not H408 W-NPAR God H430 EDP speak H1696 VPY3MS with H5973 PREP-1MP us , lest H6435 CONJ we die H4191 .
20 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , Fear H3372 not H408 NPAR : for H3588 CONJ God H430 D-EDP is come H935 VQPMS to H5668 prove H5254 you , and that H5668 WB-NMS his fear H3374 may be H1961 VQY3FS before H5921 PREP your faces H6440 CMP-2MP , that ye sin H2398 not H1115 L-NPAR .
21 And the people H5971 stood H5975 W-VQY3MS afar off H7350 , and Moses H4872 drew near H5066 unto H413 PREP the thick darkness H6205 where H834 RPRO God H430 was .
22 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Thus H3541 thou shalt say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS have seen H7200 that H3588 CONJ I have talked H1696 VPQ1MS with H5973 you from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD .
23 Ye shall not H3808 NADV make H6213 with H854 PREP-1MS me gods H430 CDP of silver H3701 , neither H3808 NADV shall ye make H6213 unto you gods H430 of gold H2091 NMS .
24 An altar H4196 of earth H127 thou shalt make H6213 VQY2MS unto me , and shalt sacrifice H2076 thereon H5921 PREP-3MS thy burnt offerings H5930 , and thy peace offerings H8002 , thy sheep H6629 , and thine oxen H1241 : in all H3605 B-CMS places H4725 D-NMS where H834 RPRO I record H2142 my name H8034 I will come H935 VQI1MS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , and I will bless H1288 thee .
25 And if H518 W-PART thou wilt make H6213 VQY2MS me an altar H4196 of stone H68 NFP , thou shalt not H3808 ADV build H1129 it of hewn stone H1496 : for H3588 CONJ if thou lift up H5130 thy tool H2719 upon H5921 PREP-3FS it , thou hast polluted H2490 it .
26 Neither H3808 ADV shalt thou go up H5927 by steps H4609 unto H5921 PREP mine altar H4196 , that H834 RPRO thy nakedness H6172 be not H3808 ADV discovered H1540 thereon H5921 .
