when

the

of
the

of
Israel
gathered
themselves
together
at
Shiloh,
to

to

against
them.

1
Now
Jephthah
the
Gileadite
was
a
mighty
man
of
valour,
and
he
was
the
son
of
an
harlot:
and
Gilead
begat
Jephthah.
2
And
Gilead’s
wife
bare
him
sons;
and
his
wife’s
sons
grew
up,
and
they
thrust
out
Jephthah,
and
said
unto
him,
Thou
shalt
not
inherit
in
our
father’s
house;
for
thou
art
the
son
of
a
strange
woman.
3
Then
Jephthah
fled
from
his
brethren,
and
dwelt
in
the
land
of
Tob:
and
there
were
gathered
vain
men
to
Jephthah,
and
went
out
with
him.
4
And
it
came
to
pass
in
process
of
time,
that
the
children
of
Ammon
made
war
against
Israel.
5
And
it
was
so,
that
when
the
children
of
Ammon
made
war
against
Israel,
the
elders
of
Gilead
went
to
fetch
Jephthah
out
of
the
land
of
Tob:
6
And
they
said
unto
Jephthah,
Come,
and
be
our
captain,
that
we
may
fight
with
the
children
of
Ammon.
7
And
Jephthah
said
unto
the
elders
of
Gilead,
Did
not
ye
hate
me,
and
expel
me
out
of
my
father’s
house?
and
why
are
ye
come
unto
me
now
when
ye
are
in
distress?
8
And
the
elders
of
Gilead
said
unto
Jephthah,
Therefore
we
turn
again
to
thee
now,
that
thou
mayest
go
with
us,
and
fight
against
the
children
of
Ammon,
and
be
our
head
over
all
the
inhabitants
of
Gilead.
9
And
Jephthah
said
unto
the
elders
of
Gilead,
If
ye
bring
me
home
again
to
fight
against
the
children
of
Ammon,
and
the
LORD
deliver
them
before
me,
shall
I
be
your
head?
10
And
the
elders
of
Gilead
said
unto
Jephthah,
The
LORD
be
witness
between
us,
if
we
do
not
so
according
to
thy
words.
11
Then
Jephthah
went
with
the
elders
of
Gilead,
and
the
people
made
him
head
and
captain
over
them:
and
Jephthah
uttered
all
his
words
before
the
LORD
in
Mizpeh.
12
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
unto
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon,
saying,
What
hast
thou
to
do
with
me,
that
thou
art
come
against
me
to
fight
in
my
land?
13
And
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
answered
unto
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
Because
Israel
took
away
my
land,
when
they
came
up
out
of
Egypt,
from
Arnon
even
unto
Jabbok,
and
unto
Jordan:
now
therefore
restore
those
lands
again
peaceably.
14
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
again
unto
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon:
15
And
said
unto
him,
Thus
saith
Jephthah,
Israel
took
not
away
the
land
of
Moab,
nor
the
land
of
the
children
of
Ammon:
16
But
when
Israel
came
up
from
Egypt,
and
walked
through
the
wilderness
unto
the
Red
sea,
and
came
to
Kadesh;
17
Then
Israel
sent
messengers
unto
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
Let
me,
I
pray
thee,
pass
through
thy
land:
but
the
king
of
Edom
would
not
hearken
thereto.
And
in
like
manner
they
sent
unto
the
king
of
Moab:
but
he
would
not
consent:
and
Israel
abode
in
Kadesh.
18
Then
they
went
along
through
the
wilderness,
and
compassed
the
land
of
Edom,
and
the
land
of
Moab,
and
came
by
the
east
side
of
the
land
of
Moab,
and
pitched
on
the
other
side
of
Arnon,
but
came
not
within
the
border
of
Moab:
for
Arnon
was
the
border
of
Moab.
19
And
Israel
sent
messengers
unto
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
the
king
of
Heshbon;
and
Israel
said
unto
him,
Let
us
pass,
we
pray
thee,
through
thy
land
into
my
place.
20
But
Sihon
trusted
not
Israel
to
pass
through
his
coast:
but
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people
together,
and
pitched
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
against
Israel.
21
And
the
LORD
God
of
Israel
delivered
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel,
and
they
smote
them:
so
Israel
possessed
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
inhabitants
of
that
country.
22
And
they
possessed
all
the
coasts
of
the
Amorites,
from
Arnon
even
unto
Jabbok,
and
from
the
wilderness
even
unto
Jordan.
23
So
now
the
LORD
God
of
Israel
hath
dispossessed
the
Amorites
from
before
his
people
Israel,
and
shouldest
thou
possess
it?
24
Wilt
not
thou
possess
that
which
Chemosh
thy
god
giveth
thee
to
possess?
So
whomsoever
the
LORD
our
God
shall
drive
out
from
before
us,
them
will
we
possess.
25
And
now
art
thou
any
thing
better
than
Balak
the
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
did
he
ever
strive
against
Israel,
or
did
he
ever
fight
against
them,
26
While
Israel
dwelt
in
Heshbon
and
her
towns,
and
in
Aroer
and
her
towns,
and
in
all
the
cities
that
be
along
by
the
coasts
of
Arnon,
three
hundred
years?
why
therefore
did
ye
not
recover
them
within
that
time?
27
Wherefore
I
have
not
sinned
against
thee,
but
thou
doest
me
wrong
to
war
against
me:
the
LORD
the
Judge
be
judge
this
day
between
the
children
of
Israel
and
the
children
of
Ammon.
28
Howbeit
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
hearkened
not
unto
the
words
of
Jephthah
which
he
sent
him.
29
Then
the
Spirit
of
the
LORD
came
upon
Jephthah,
and
he
passed
over
Gilead,
and
Manasseh,
and
passed
over
Mizpeh
of
Gilead,
and
from
Mizpeh
of
Gilead
he
passed
over
unto
the
children
of
Ammon.
30
And
Jephthah
vowed
a
vow
unto
the
LORD,
and
said,
If
thou
shalt
without
fail
deliver
the
children
of
Ammon
into
mine
hands,
31
Then
it
shall
be,
that
whatsoever
cometh
forth
of
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me,
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
children
of
Ammon,
shall
surely
be
the
LORD’S,
and
I
will
offer
it
up
for
a
burnt
offering.
32
So
Jephthah
passed
over
unto
the
children
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them;
and
the
LORD
delivered
them
into
his
hands.
33
And
he
smote
them
from
Aroer,
even
till
thou
come
to
Minnith,
even
twenty
cities,
and
unto
the
plain
of
the
vineyards,
with
a
very
great
slaughter.
Thus
the
children
of
Ammon
were
subdued
before
the
children
of
Israel.
34
And
Jephthah
came
to
Mizpeh
unto
his
house,
and,
behold,
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
timbrels
and
with
dances:
and
she
was
his
only
child;
beside
her
he
had
neither
son
nor
daughter.
35
And
it
came
to
pass,
when
he
saw
her,
that
he
rent
his
clothes,
and
said,
Alas,
my
daughter!
thou
hast
brought
me
very
low,
and
thou
art
one
of
them
that
trouble
me:
for
I
have
opened
my
mouth
unto
the
LORD,
and
I
cannot
go
back.
36
And
she
said
unto
him,
My
father,
if
thou
hast
opened
thy
mouth
unto
the
LORD,
do
to
me
according
to
that
which
hath
proceeded
out
of
thy
mouth;
forasmuch
as
the
LORD
hath
taken
vengeance
for
thee
of
thine
enemies,
even
of
the
children
of
Ammon.
37
And
she
said
unto
her
father,
Let
this
thing
be
done
for
me:
let
me
alone
two
months,
that
I
may
go
up
and
down
upon
the
mountains,
and
bewail
my
virginity,
I
and
my
fellows.
38
And
he
said,
Go.
And
he
sent
her
away
for
two
months:
and
she
went
with
her
companions,
and
bewailed
her
virginity
upon
the
mountains.
39
And
it
came
to
pass
at
the
end
of
two
months,
that
she
returned
unto
her
father,
who
did
with
her
according
to
his
vow
which
he
had
vowed:
and
she
knew
no
man.
And
it
was
a
custom
in
Israel,
40
That
the
daughters

Israel
went

lament
the

four

For
they

H1571
W-CONJ
they

18
Then
they

21
And
the

W-ADV
the

Howbeit

Then

--
a
very

and
the
Bene-Ammon
are
humbled
at

34
And
Jephthah
cometh
into
Mizpeh,
unto

and
lo,

35
And
it

--

36

she
saith

37
And
she

38
And
he

and
she
goeth,
she
and

and
she
weepeth

the

of
Gilead

And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
unto
the
king
of
the

Ammon,
saying,
What
hast
thou
to
do
with

that
thou
art

unto
me

fight
against
my
land?
13
And
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
answered
unto
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
Because
Israel
took
away
my
land,
when
he
came
up
out
of
Egypt,
from
the
Arnon
even
unto
the
Jabbok,
and
unto
the
Jordan:
now
therefore
restore
those
lands
again
peaceably.
14
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
again
unto
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon;
15
and
he
said
unto
him,
Thus
saith
Jephthah:
Israel
took
not
away
the
land
of
Moab,
nor
the
land
of
the
children
of
Ammon,
16
but
when
they
came
up
from
Egypt,
and
Israel
went
through
the
wilderness
unto
the
Red
Sea,
and
came
to
Kadesh;
17
then
Israel
sent
messengers
unto
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
Let
me,
I
pray
thee,
pass
through
thy
land;
but
the
king
of
Edom
hearkened
not.
And
in
like
manner
he
sent
unto
the
king
of
Moab;
but
he
would
not:
and
Israel
abode
in
Kadesh.
18
Then
they
went
through
the
wilderness,
and
went
around
the
land
of
Edom,
and
the
land
of
Moab,
and
came
by
the
east
side
of
the
land
of
Moab,
and
they
encamped
on
the
other
side
of
the
Arnon;
but
they
came
not
within
the
border
of
Moab,
for
the
Arnon
was
the
border
of
Moab.
19
And
Israel
sent
messengers
unto
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
the
king
of
Heshbon;
and
Israel
said
unto
him,
Let
us
pass,
we
pray
thee,
through
thy
land
unto
my
place.
20
But
Sihon
trusted
not
Israel
to
pass
through
his
border;
but
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people
together,
and
encamped
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
against
Israel.
21
And
Jehovah,
the
God
of
Israel,
delivered
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel,
and
they
smote
them:
so
Israel
possessed
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
inhabitants
of
that
country.
22
And
they
possessed
all
the
border
of
the
Amorites,
from
the
Arnon
even
unto
the
Jabbok,
and
from
the
wilderness
even
unto
the
Jordan.
23
So
now
Jehovah,
the
God
of
Israel,
hath
dispossessed
the
Amorites
from
before
his
people
Israel,
and
shouldest
thou
possess
them?
24
Wilt
not
thou
possess
that
which
Chemosh
thy
god
giveth
thee
to
possess?
So
whomsoever
Jehovah
our
God
hath
dispossessed
from
before
us,
them
will
we
possess.
25
And
now
art
thou
anything
better
than
Balak
the
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
did
he
ever
strive
against
Israel,
or
did
he
ever
fight
against
them?
26
While
Israel
dwelt
in
Heshbon
and
its
towns,
and
in
Aroer
and
its
towns,
and
in
all
the
cities
that
are
along
by
the
side
of
the
Arnon,
three
hundred
years;
wherefore
did
ye
not
recover
them
within
that
time?
27
I
therefore
have
not
sinned
against
thee,
but
thou
doest
me
wrong
to
war
against
me:
Jehovah,
the
Judge,
be
judge
this
day
between
the
children
of
Israel
and
the
children
of
Ammon.
28
Howbeit
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
hearkened
not
unto
the
words
of
Jephthah
which
he
sent
him.
29
Then
the
Spirit
of
Jehovah
came
upon
Jephthah,
and
he
passed
over
Gilead
and
Manasseh,
and
passed
over
Mizpeh
of
Gilead,
and
from
Mizpeh
of
Gilead
he
passed
over
unto
the
children
of
Ammon.
30
And
Jephthah
vowed
a
vow
unto
Jehovah,
and
said,
If
thou
wilt
indeed
deliver
the
children
of
Ammon
into
my
hand,
31
then
it
shall
be,
that
whatsoever
cometh
forth
from
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me,
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
children
of
Ammon,
it
shall
be
Jehovahs,
and
I
will
offer
it
up
for
a
burnt-offering.
32
So
Jephthah
passed
over
unto
the
children
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them;
and
Jehovah
delivered
them
into
his
hand.
33
And
he
smote
them
from
Aroer
until
thou
come
to
Minnith,
even
twenty
cities,
and
unto
Abelcheramim,
with
a
very
great
slaughter.
So
the
children
of
Ammon
were
subdued
before
the
children
of
Israel.
34
And
Jephthah
came
to
Mizpah
unto
his
house;
and,
behold,
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
timbrels
and
with
dances:
and
she
was
his
only
child;
besides
her
he
had
neither
son
nor
daughter.
35
And
it
came
to
pass,
when
he
saw
her,
that
he
rent
his
clothes,
and
said,
Alas,
my
daughter!
thou
hast
brought
me
very
low,
and
thou
art
one
of
them
that
trouble
me;
for
I
have
opened
my
mouth
unto
Jehovah,
and
I
cannot
go
back.
36
And
she
said
unto
him,
My
father,
thou
hast
opened
thy
mouth
unto
Jehovah;
do
unto
me
according
to
that
which
hath
proceeded
out
of
thy
mouth,
forasmuch
as
Jehovah
hath
taken
vengeance
for
thee
on
thine
enemies,
even
on
the
children
of
Ammon.
37
And
she
said
unto
her
father,
Let
this
thing
be
done
for
me:
let
me
alone
two
months,
that
I
may
depart
and
go
down
upon
the
mountains,
and
bewail
my
virginity,
I
and
my
companions.
38
And
he
said,
Go.
And
he
sent
her
away
for
two
months:
and
she
departed,
she
and
her
companions,
and
bewailed
her
virginity
upon
the
mountains.
39
And
it
came
to
pass
at
the
end
of
two
months,
that
she
returned
unto
her
father,
who
did
with
her
according
to
his
vow
which
he
had
vowed:
and
she
knew
not
man.
And
it
was
a
custom
in
Israel,
40
that

fought
against
Israel.
21
Yahweh,
the
God
of
Israel,
delivered
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel,
and
they
struck
them:
so
Israel
possessed
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
inhabitants
of
that
country.
22
They
possessed
all
the
border
of
the
Amorites,
from
the
Arnon
even
to
the
Jabbok,
and
from
the
wilderness
even
to
the
Jordan.
23
So
now
Yahweh,
the
God
of
Israel,
has
dispossessed
the
Amorites
from
before
his
people
Israel,
and
should
you
possess
them?
24
Won't
you
possess
that
which
Chemosh
your
god
gives
you
to
possess?
So
whoever
Yahweh
our
God
has
dispossessed
from
before
us,
them
will
we
possess.
25
Now
are
you
anything
better
than
Balak
the
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
did
he
ever
strive
against
Israel,
or
did
he
ever
fight
against
them?
26
While
Israel
lived
in
Heshbon
and
its
towns,
and
in
Aroer
and
its
towns,
and
in
all
the
cities
that
are
along
by
the
side
of
the
Arnon,
three
hundred
years;
why
didn't
you
recover
them
within
that
time?
27
I
therefore
have
not
sinned
against
you,
but
you
do
me
wrong
to
war
against
me:
Yahweh,
the
Judge,
be
judge
this
day
between
the
children
of
Israel
and
the
children
of
Ammon.
28
However
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
didn't
listen
to
the
words
of
Jephthah
which
he
sent
him.
29
Then
the
Spirit
of
Yahweh
came
on
Jephthah,
and
he
passed
over
Gilead
and
Manasseh,
and
passed
over
Mizpeh
of
Gilead,
and
from
Mizpeh
of
Gilead
he
passed
over
to
the
children
of
Ammon.
30
Jephthah
vowed
a
vow
to
Yahweh,
and
said,
If
you
will
indeed
deliver
the
children
of
Ammon
into
my
hand,
31
then
it
shall
be,
that
whatever
comes
forth
from
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me,
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
children
of
Ammon,
it
shall
be
Yahweh's,
and
I
will
offer
it
up
for
a
burnt
offering.
32
So
Jephthah
passed
over
to
the
children
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them;
and
Yahweh
delivered
them
into
his
hand.
33
He
struck
them
from
Aroer
until
you
come
to
Minnith,
even
twenty
cities,
and
to
Abelcheramim,
with
a
very
great
slaughter.
So
the
children
of
Ammon
were
subdued
before
the
children
of
Israel.
34
Jephthah
came
to
Mizpah
to
his
house;
and,
behold,
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
tambourines
and
with
dances:
and
she
was
his
only
child;
besides
her
he
had
neither
son
nor
daughter.
35
It
happened,
when
he
saw
her,
that
he
tore
his
clothes,
and
said,
Alas,
my
daughter!
you
have
brought
me
very
low,
and
you
are
one
of
those
who
trouble
me;
for
I
have
opened
my
mouth
to
Yahweh,
and
I
can't
go
back.
36
She
said
to
him,
My
father,
you
have
opened
your
mouth
to
Yahweh;
do
to
me
according
to
that
which
has
proceeded
out
of
your
mouth,
because
Yahweh
has
taken
vengeance
for
you
on
your
enemies,
even
on
the
children
of
Ammon.
37
She
said
to
her
father,
Let
this
thing
be
done
for
me:
let
me
alone
two
months,
that
I
may
depart
and
go
down
on
the
mountains,
and
bewail
my
virginity,
I
and
my
companions.
38
He
said,
Go.
He
sent
her
away
for
two
months:
and
she
departed,
she
and
her
companions,
and
mourned
her
virginity
on
the
mountains.
39
It
happened
at
the
end
of
two
months,
that
she
returned
to
her
father,
who
did
with
her
according
to
his
vow
which
he
had
vowed:
and
she
was
a
virgin.

said
unto
him,
Thou

in
our

for
thou
art
the
son
of
another
woman.
3
Then
Jephthah
fled
from
his
brethren,
and
dwelt
in

were
gathered
vain
fellows
to
Jephthah,

made
war

Israel.

And
it

so,
that
when
the
children
of
Ammon
made
war
against
Israel,
the
elders
of
Gilead
went
to
fetch
Jephthah
out
of
the

unto
Jephthah,
Come

be
our

that
we

the
children

Ammon.

And
Jephthah
said
unto
the
elders

Gilead,
Did
not

drive
me
out
of
my

house?
and
why
are
ye

Jephthah,
Therefore
are

thou

thou
shalt

If
ye

me
home
again

Ammon,

the

with
the
elders

Gilead,
and
the
people

him

them:

spake
all
his

before
the

And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
unto
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon,
saying,
What
hast
thou
to
do
with
me,
that
thou
art
come
unto
me
to
fight
against
my
land?
13
And
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
answered
unto
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
Because
Israel
took
away
my
land,
when
he
came
up
out
of
Egypt,
from
Arnon
even
unto
Jabbok,
and
unto
Jordan:
now
therefore
restore
those
{cf15i
lands}
again
peaceably.
14
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
again
unto
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon:
15
and
he
said
unto
him,
Thus
saith
Jephthah:
Israel
took
not
away
the
land
of
Moab,
nor
the
land
of
the
children
of
Ammon:
16
but
when
they
came
up
from
Egypt,
and
Israel
walked
through
the
wilderness
unto
the
Red
Sea,
and
came
to
Kadesh;
17
then
Israel
sent
messengers
unto
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
Let
me,
I
pray
thee,
pass
through
thy
land:
but
the
king
of
Edom
hearkened
not.
And
in
like
manner
he
sent
unto
the
king
of
Moab:
but
he
would
not:
and
Israel
abode
in
Kadesh.
18
Then
he
walked
through
the
wilderness,
and
compassed
the
land
of
Edom,
and
the
land
of
Moab,
and
came
by
the
east
side
of
the
land
of
Moab,
and
they
pitched
on
the
other
side
of
Arnon;
but
they
came
not
within
the
border
of
Moab,
for
Arnon
was
the
border
of
Moab.
19
And
Israel
sent
messengers
unto
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
the
king
of
Heshbon;
and
Israel
said
unto
him,
Let
us
pass,
we
pray
thee,
through
thy
land
unto
my
place.
20
But
Sihon
trusted
not
Israel
to
pass
through
his
border:
but
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people
together,
and
pitched
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
against
Israel.
21
And
the
LORD,
the
God
of
Israel,
delivered
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel,
and
they
smote
them:
so
Israel
possessed
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
inhabitants
of
that
country.
22
And
they
possessed
all
the
border
of
the
Amorites,
from
Arnon
even
unto
Jabbok,
and
from
the
wilderness
even
unto
Jordan.
23
So
now
the
LORD,
the
God
of
Israel,
hath
dispossessed
the
Amorites
from
before
his
people
Israel,
and
shouldest
thou
possess
them?
24
Wilt
not

that
which

So
whomsoever

three

wherefore
did

27
I
therefore
have
not

but
thou
doest

the
LORD,
the

and
the

of
Ammon.
28
Howbeit
the
king
of
the
children
Ammon
hearkened
not
unto
the
words
of
Jephthah
which
he
sent
him.
29
Then
the
spirit
of
the
LORD
came
upon
Jephthah,
and
he
passed
over
Gilead
and
Manasseh,
and
passed
over
Mizpeh
of
Gilead,
and
from
Mizpeh
of
Gilead
he
passed
over
unto
the
children
of
Ammon.
30
And
Jephthah
vowed
a
vow
unto
the
LORD,
and
said,
If
thou
wilt
indeed
deliver
the
children
of
Ammon
into
mine

31

of
Ammon,
it
shall
be
the
LORD-S,
and
I
will
offer
it
up
for
a
burnt
offering.
32
So
Jephthah
passed
over
unto
the
children
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them;
and
the
LORD
delivered
them
into
his
hand.
33
And
he
smote
them
from

unto
Abel-cheramim,
with
a
very

So
the
children
of
Ammon
were
subdued
before
the

34
And
Jephthah
came
to
Mizpah
unto
his
house,
and,
behold,
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
timbrels
and
with
dances:
and
she
was
his
only
child;
beside
her
he
had
neither
son
nor
daughter.
35
And
it
came
to
pass,
when
he
saw
her,
that
he
rent
his
clothes,
and
said,
Alas,
my
daughter!
thou
hast
brought
me
very
low,
and
thou
art
one
of
them
that
trouble
me:
for
I
have
opened
my
mouth
unto
the
LORD,
and
I
cannot
go
back.
36
And
she
said
unto
him,
My
father,
thou
hast
opened
thy
mouth
unto
the
LORD;
do
unto
me
according
to
that
which
hath
proceeded
out
of
thy
mouth;
forasmuch
as
the
LORD
hath
taken
vengeance
for
thee
of
thine
enemies,
even
of
the
children
of
Ammon.
37
And
she
said
unto
her
father,
Let
this

done

let

two

that
I

38

he
said,
Go.

he
sent
her
away
for
two

and
she
departed,
she
and

and
bewailed

cut
them

sent
them

saying,
Whosoever
cometh
not
forth
after
Saul
and
after
Samuel,
so
shall
it
be
done
unto
his
oxen.
And
the
dread
of
the

the
people,
and
they
came
out
as
one
man.

1
Now
Jephthah
the
Gileadite
was
a
mighty
man
of
valor,
and
he
was
the
son
of
an
harlot:
and
Gilead
begat
Jephthah.
2
And
Gilead's
wife
bore
him
sons;
and
his
wife's
sons
grew
up,
and
they
thrust
out
Jephthah,
and
said
to
him,
You
shall
not
inherit
in
our
father's
house;
for
you
are
the
son
of
a
strange
woman.
3
Then
Jephthah
fled
from
his
brothers,
and
dwelled
in
the
land
of
Tob:
and
there
were
gathered
vain
men
to
Jephthah,
and
went
out
with
him.
4
And
it
came
to
pass
in
process
of
time,
that
the
children
of
Ammon
made
war
against
Israel.
5
And
it
was
so,
that
when
the
children
of
Ammon
made
war
against
Israel,
the
elders
of
Gilead
went
to
fetch
Jephthah
out
of
the
land
of
Tob:
6
And
they
said
to
Jephthah,
Come,
and
be
our
captain,
that
we
may
fight
with
the
children
of
Ammon.
7
And
Jephthah
said
to
the
elders
of
Gilead,
Did
not
you
hate
me,
and
expel
me
out
of
my
father's
house?
and
why
are
you
come
to
me
now
when
you
are
in
distress?
8
And
the
elders
of
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
Therefore
we
turn
again
to
you
now,
that
you
may
go
with
us,
and
fight
against
the
children
of
Ammon,
and
be
our
head
over
all
the
inhabitants
of
Gilead.
9
And
Jephthah
said
to
the
elders
of
Gilead,
If
you
bring
me
home
again
to
fight
against
the
children
of
Ammon,
and
the
LORD
deliver
them
before
me,
shall
I
be
your
head?
10
And
the
elders
of
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
The
LORD
be
witness
between
us,
if
we
do
not
so
according
to
your
words.
11
Then
Jephthah
went
with
the
elders
of
Gilead,
and
the
people
made
him
head
and
captain
over
them:
and
Jephthah
uttered
all
his
words
before
the
LORD
in
Mizpeh.
12
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon,
saying,
What
have
you
to
do
with
me,
that
you
are
come
against
me
to
fight
in
my
land?
13
And
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
answered
to
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
Because
Israel
took
away
my
land,
when
they
came
up
out
of
Egypt,
from
Arnon
even
to
Jabbok,
and
to
Jordan:
now
therefore
restore
those
lands
again
peaceably.
14
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
again
to
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon:
15
And
said
to
him,
Thus
said
Jephthah,
Israel
took
not
away
the
land
of
Moab,
nor
the
land
of
the
children
of
Ammon:
16
But
when
Israel
came
up
from
Egypt,
and
walked
through
the
wilderness
to
the
Red
sea,
and
came
to
Kadesh;
17
Then
Israel
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
Let
me,
I
pray
you,
pass
through
your
land:
but
the
king
of
Edom
would
not
listen
thereto.
And
in
like
manner
they
sent
to
the
king
of
Moab:
but
he
would
not
consent:
and
Israel
stayed
in
Kadesh.
18
Then
they
went
along
through
the
wilderness,
and
compassed
the
land
of
Edom,
and
the
land
of
Moab,
and
came
by
the
east
side
of
the
land
of
Moab,
and
pitched
on
the
other
side
of
Arnon,
but
came
not
within
the
border
of
Moab:
for
Arnon
was
the
border
of
Moab.
19
And
Israel
sent
messengers
to
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
the
king
of
Heshbon;
and
Israel
said
to
him,
Let
us
pass,
we
pray
you,
through
your
land
into
my
place.
20
But
Sihon
trusted
not
Israel
to
pass
through
his
coast:
but
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people
together,
and
pitched
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
against
Israel.
21
And
the
LORD
God
of
Israel
delivered
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel,
and
they
smote
them:
so
Israel
possessed
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
inhabitants
of
that
country.
22
And
they
possessed
all
the
coasts
of
the
Amorites,
from
Arnon
even
to
Jabbok,
and
from
the
wilderness
even
to
Jordan.
23
So
now
the
LORD
God
of
Israel
has
dispossessed
the
Amorites
from
before
his
people
Israel,
and
should
you
possess
it?
24
Will
not
you
possess
that
which
Chemosh
your
god
gives
you
to
possess?
So
whomsoever
the
LORD
our
God
shall
drive
out
from
before
us,
them
will
we
possess.
25
And
now
are
you
any
thing
better
than
Balak
the
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
did
he
ever
strive
against
Israel,
or
did
he
ever
fight
against
them,
26
While
Israel
dwelled
in
Heshbon
and
her
towns,
and
in
Aroer
and
her
towns,
and
in
all
the
cities
that
be
along
by
the
coasts
of
Arnon,
three
hundred
years?
why
therefore
did
you
not
recover
them
within
that
time?
27
Why
I
have
not
sinned
against
you,
but
you
do
me
wrong
to
war
against
me:
the
LORD
the
Judge
be
judge
this
day
between
the
children
of
Israel
and
the
children
of
Ammon.
28
However,
the
king
of
the
children
of
Ammon
listened
not
to
the
words
of
Jephthah
which
he
sent
him.
29
Then
the
Spirit
of
the
LORD
came
on
Jephthah,
and
he
passed
over
Gilead,
and
Manasseh,
and
passed
over
Mizpeh
of
Gilead,
and
from
Mizpeh
of
Gilead
he
passed
over
to
the
children
of
Ammon.
30
And
Jephthah
vowed
a
vow
to
the
LORD,
and
said,
If
you
shall
without
fail
deliver
the
children
of
Ammon
into
my
hands,
31
Then
it
shall
be,
that
whatever
comes
forth
of
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me,
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
children
of
Ammon,
shall
surely
be
the
LORD's,
and
I
will
offer
it
up
for
a
burnt
offering.
32
So
Jephthah
passed
over
to
the
children
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them;
and
the
LORD
delivered
them
into
his
hands.
33
And
he
smote
them
from
Aroer,
even
till
you
come
to
Minnith,
even
twenty
cities,
and
to
the
plain
of
the
vineyards,
with
a
very
great
slaughter.
Thus
the
children
of
Ammon
were
subdued
before
the
children
of
Israel.
34
And
Jephthah
came
to
Mizpeh
to
his
house,
and,
behold,
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
tambourines
and
with
dances:
and
she
was
his
only
child;
beside
her
he
had
neither
son
nor
daughter.
35
And
it
came
to
pass,
when
he
saw
her,
that
he
rent
his
clothes,
and
said,
Alas,
my
daughter!
you
have
brought
me
very
low,
and
you
are
one
of
them
that
trouble
me:
for
I
have
opened
my
mouth
to
the
LORD,
and
I
cannot
go
back.
36
And
she
said
to
him,
My
father,
if
you
have
opened
your
mouth
to
the
LORD,
do
to
me
according
to
that
which
has
proceeded
out
of
your
mouth;
for
as
much
as
the
LORD
has
taken
vengeance
for
you
of
your
enemies,
even
of
the
children
of
Ammon.
37
And
she
said
to
her
father,
Let
this
thing
be
done
for
me:
let
me
alone
two
months,
that
I
may
go
up
and
down
on
the
mountains,
and
mourn
my
virginity,
I
and
my
fellows.
38
And
he
said,
Go.
And
he
sent
her
away
for
two
months:
and
she
went
with
her
companions,
and
bewailed
her
virginity
on
the
mountains.
39
And
it
came
to
pass
at
the
end
of
two
months,
that
she
returned
to
her
father,
who
did
with
her
according
to
his
vow
which
he
had
vowed:
and
she
knew
no
man.
And
it
was
a
custom
in
Israel,
40
That
the
daughters
of
Israel
went
yearly
to
lament
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
the
Gileadite
four
days
in

they

however,
the

of
the

was
Laish

the

all

the

said,
Who

all
the

to

For
they
had
made
a
great

concerning
him

came

to
Mizpeh,
saying,
He
shall
surely
be
put

Now
Jephthah
the

His
mother
was
a

but
Gilead
was
his

2
Gilead's

also
gave
him
sons.
When
his

they

So
Jephthah

and
lived
in
the
land
of
Tob.
Lawless
men
joined
Jephthah's
gang
and
traveled
with
him.
4
It
was
some
time
after
this
when
the
Ammonites
fought
with
Israel.
5
When
the
Ammonites
attacked,
the
leaders
of
Gilead
asked
Jephthah
to
come
back
from
the
land
of
Tob.
6
They
said,
"Come,
be
our
commander,
so
we

fight
with
the
Ammonites."
7
Jephthah
said
to
the
leaders
of
Gilead,
"But

made

Why

The
leaders

Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
"That
may

but
now
we
pledge
to
you
our
loyalty.
Come
with
us
and
fight
with
the
Ammonites.
Then
you
will
become
the

all
who
live
in
Gilead."
9
Jephthah
said
to
the
leaders
of
Gilead,
"All
right!
If
you
take
me
back
to
fight

the
Ammonites

The

"The

11
So
Jephthah
went
with
the
leaders
of
Gilead.
The
people
made
him
their
leader
and
commander.
Jephthah
repeated
the
terms
of
the
agreement
before
the

in
Mizpah.
12
Jephthah
sent
messengers
to
the
Ammonite
king,
saying,
"Why

13
The
Ammonite
king
said
to
Jephthah's
messengers,
"Because
Israel

my
land

they
came
up
from
Egypt—
from
the
Arnon
River

the
south
to
the
Jabbok
River
in
the
north,
and
as
far
west
as
the
Jordan.
Now
return

peaceably!"
14
Jephthah
sent
messengers
back
to
the
Ammonite
king
15
and
said
to
him,
"This
is
what
Jephthah
says,
'Israel
did
not
steal
the
land
of
Moab
and
the
land
of
the
Ammonites.
16
When
they
left
Egypt,
Israel
traveled
through
the
desert
as
far
as
the
Red

and
then
came
to
Kadesh.
17
Israel
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
"Please
allow
us

But
the
king
of
Edom
rejected
the
request.
Israel
sent
the
same
request
to
the
king
of
Moab,
but
he
was
unwilling

So
Israel
stayed
at
Kadesh.
18
Then
Israel

He
assembled
his
whole
army,
camped
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
with
Israel.
21
The
LORD
God
of
Israel
handed
Sihon
and
his
whole
army
over
to
Israel
and
they
defeated
them.
Israel
took
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites
who
lived
in
that
land.
22
They
took
all
the
Amorite
territory
from
the
Arnon
River
on
the
south
to
the
Jabbok
River
on
the
north,
from
the
desert
in
the
east
to
the
Jordan
in
the
west.
23
Since
the
LORD
God
of
Israel
has
driven
out
the
Amorites
before
his
people
Israel,
do
you
think
you
can
just
take
it
from
them?
24
You
have
the
right
to
take
what
Chemosh
your
god
gives
you,
but
we
will
take
the
land
of
all
whom
the
LORD
our
God
has
driven
out
before
us.
25
Are
you
really
better
than
Balak
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
Did
he
dare
to
quarrel
with
Israel?
Did
he
dare
to
fight
with
them?
26
Israel
has
been
living
in
Heshbon
and
its
nearby
towns,
in
Aroer
and
its
nearby
towns,
and
in
all
the
cities
along
the
Arnon
for
three
hundred
years!
Why
did
you
not
reclaim
them
during
that
time?
27
I
have
not
done
you
wrong,
but
you
are
doing
wrong
by
attacking
me.
May
the
LORD,
the
Judge,
judge
this
day
between
the
Israelites
and
the
Ammonites!'"
28
But
the
Ammonite
king
disregarded
the
message
sent
by
Jephthah.
29
The
LORD's
spirit
empowered
Jephthah.
He
passed
through
Gilead
and
Manasseh
and
went
to
Mizpah
in
Gilead.
From
there
he
approached
the
Ammonites.
30
Jephthah
made
a
vow
to
the
LORD,
saying,
"If
you
really
do
hand
the
Ammonites
over
to
me,
31
then
whoever
is
the
first
to
come
through
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me
when
I
return
safely
from
fighting
the
Ammonites—
he
will
belong
to
the
LORD
and
I
will
offer
him
up
as
a
burnt
sacrifice."
32
Jephthah
approached
the
Ammonites
to
fight
with
them,
and
the
LORD
handed
them
over
to
him.
33
He
defeated
them
from
Aroer
all
the
way
to
Minnith—
twenty
cities
in
all,
even
as
far
as
Abel
Keramim!
He
wiped
them
out!
The
Israelites
humiliated
the
Ammonites.
34
When
Jephthah
came
home
to
Mizpah,
there
was
his
daughter
hurrying
out
to
meet
him,
dancing
to
the
rhythm
of
tambourines.
She
was
his
only
child;
except
for
her
he
had
no
son
or
daughter.
35
When
he
saw
her,
he
ripped
his
clothes
and
said,
"Oh
no!
My
daughter!
You
have
completely
ruined
me!
You
have
brought
me
disaster!
I
made
an
oath
to
the
LORD,
and
I
cannot
break
it."
36
She
said
to
him,
"My
father,
since
you
made
an
oath
to
the
LORD,
do
to
me
as
you
promised.
After
all,
the
LORD
vindicated
you
before
your
enemies,
the
Ammonites."
37
She
then
said
to
her
father,
"Please
grant
me
this
one
wish.
For
two
months
allow
me
to
walk
through
the
hills
with
my
friends
and
mourn
my
virginity."
38
He
said,
"You
may
go."
He
permitted
her
to
leave
for
two
months.
She
went
with
her
friends
and
mourned
her
virginity
as
she
walked
through
the
hills.
39
After
two
months
she
returned
to
her
father,
and
he
did
to
her
as
he
had
vowed.
She
died
a
virgin.
Her
tragic
death
gave
rise
to
a
custom
in
Israel.
40
Every
year
Israelite
women
commemorate
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
the
Gileadite
for
four
days.
Judges 18:29
29
They
named
it
Dan
after
their
ancestor,
who
was
one
of
Israel's
sons.
But
the
city's
name
used
to
be
Laish.
Judges 20:11
11
So
all
the
men
of
Israel
gathered
together
at
the
city
as
allies.
Judges 21:5
5
The
Israelites
asked,
"Who
from
all
the
Israelite
tribes
has
not
assembled
before
the
LORD?"
They
had
made
a
solemn
oath
that
whoever
did
not
assemble
before
the
LORD
at
Mizpah
must
certainly
be
executed.
1 Samuel 3:20
20
All
Israel
from
Dan
to
Beer
Sheba
realized
that
Samuel
was
confirmed
as
a
prophet
of
the
LORD.
1 Samuel 7:5
5
Then
Samuel
said,
"Gather
all
Israel
to
Mizpah,
and
I
will
pray
to
the
LORD
on
your
behalf."
1 Samuel 10:17
17
Then
Samuel
called
the
people
together
before
the
LORD
at
Mizpah.
1 Samuel 11:7
7
He
took
a
pair
of
oxen
and
cut
them
up.
Then
he
sent
the
pieces
throughout
the
territory
of
Israel
by
the
hand
of
messengers,
who
said,
"Whoever
does
not
go
out
after
Saul
and
after
Samuel
should
expect
this
to
be
done
to
his
oxen!"
Then
the
terror
of
the
LORD
fell
on
the
people,
and
they
went
out
as
one
army.
2 Samuel 3:10
10
namely,
to
transfer
the
kingdom
from
the
house
of
Saul
and
to
establish
the
throne
of
David
over
Israel
and
over
Judah
all
the
way
from
Dan
to
Beer
Sheba!"
2 Samuel 24:2
2
The
king
told
Joab,
the
general
in
command
of
his
army,
"Go
through
all
the
tribes
of
Israel
from
Dan
to
Beer
Sheba
and
muster
the
army,
so
I
may
know
the
size
of
the
army."

1
Jephthah
was
from
the
tribe
of
Gilead.
He
was
a
strong
soldier.
But
Jephthah
was
the
son
of
a
prostitute.
His
father
was
a
man
named
Gilead.
2
Gilead's
wife
had
several
sons.
When
they
grew
up,
they
did
not
like
Jephthah.
They
forced
Jephthah
to
leave
his
hometown.
They
said
to
him,
"You
will
not
get
any
of
our
father's
property.
You
are
the
son
of
another
woman."
3
So
Jephthah
went
away
because
of
his
brothers
and
lived
in
the
land
of
Tob.
In
the
land
of
Tob,
some
rough
men
began
to
follow
Jephthah.
4
After
a
time
the
Ammonites
fought
with
the
Israelites.
5
The
Ammonites
were
fighting
against
Israel,
so
the
elders
in
Gilead
went
to
Jephthah.
They
wanted
Jephthah
to
leave
the
land
of
Tob
and
come
back
to
Gilead.
6
The
elders
said
to
Jephthah,
"Come
and
be
our
leader
so
that
we
can
fight
the
Ammonites."
7
But
Jephthah
said
to
the
elders
of
the
land
of
Gilead,
"You
forced
me
to
leave
my
father's
house.
You
hate
me.
So
why
are
you
coming
to
me
now
that
you
are
having
trouble?"
8
The
elders
from
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
"That
is
the
reason
we
have
come
to
you
now.
Please
come
with
us
and
fight
against
the
Ammonites.
You
will
be
the
commander
over
all
the
people
living
in
Gilead."
9
Then
Jephthah
said
to
the
elders
from
Gilead,
"If
you
want
me
to
come
back
to
Gilead
and
fight
the
Ammonites,
that
is
fine.
But
if
the
Lord
helps
me
win,
I
will
be
your
new
leader."
10
The
elders
from
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
"The
Lord
is
listening
to
everything
we
are
saying.
And
we
promise
to
do
everything
you
tell
us
to
do."
11
So
Jephthah
went
with
the
elders
from
Gilead,
and
the
people
made
him
their
leader
and
commander.
Jephthah
repeated
all
of
his
words
in
front
of
the
Lord
at
the
city
of
Mizpah.
12
Jephthah
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
Ammonites
with
this
message:
"What
is
the
problem
between
the
Ammonites
and
the
Israelites?
Why
have
you
come
to
fight
in
our
land?"
13
The
king
of
the
Ammonites
said
to
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
"We
are
fighting
Israel
because
the
Israelites
took
our
land
when
they
came
up
from
Egypt.
They
took
our
land
from
the
Arnon
River
to
the
Jabbok
River
to
the
Jordan
River.
Now,
tell
the
Israelites
to
give
our
land
back
to
us
without
fighting
for
it."
14
So
the
messengers
of
Jephthah
took
this
message
back
to
Jephthah.
Then
Jephthah
sent
the
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
Ammonites
again.
15
They
took
this
message:
"This
is
what
Jephthah
says:
Israel
did
not
take
the
land
of
the
Moabites
or
the
land
of
the
Ammonites.
16
When
the
Israelites
came
out
of
the
land
of
Egypt,
they
went
into
the
desert.
They
went
to
the
Red
Sea.
Then
they
went
to
Kadesh.
17
The
Israelites
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Edom.
The
messengers
asked
for
a
favor.
They
said,
'Let
the
Israelites
cross
through
your
land.'
But
the
king
of
Edom
didn't
let
us
go
through
his
land.
We
also
sent
the
same
message
to
the
king
of
Moab.
But
the
king
of
Moab
would
not
let
us
go
through
his
land
either.
So
the
Israelites
stayed
at
Kadesh.
18
"Then
the
Israelites
went
through
the
desert
and
around
the
edges
of
the
land
of
Edom
and
the
land
of
Moab.
They
traveled
east
of
the
land
of
Moab.
They
made
their
camp
on
the
other
side
of
the
Arnon
River.
They
did
not
cross
the
border
of
the
land
of
Moab.
(The
Arnon
River
was
the
border
of
the
land
of
Moab.)
19
"Then
the
Israelites
sent
messengers
to
King
Sihon
of
the
Amorites.
Sihon
was
the
king
of
the
city
of
Heshbon.
The
messengers
asked
Sihon,
'Let
the
Israelites
pass
through
your
land.
We
want
to
go
to
our
land.'
20
But
King
Sihon
of
the
Amorites
would
not
let
the
Israelites
cross
his
borders.
So
Sihon
gathered
all
of
his
people
and
made
a
camp
at
Jahaz.
Then
the
Amorites
fought
with
the
Israelites.
21
But
the
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel,
helped
the
Israelites
defeat
Sihon
and
his
army.
So
the
land
of
the
Amorites
became
the
property
of
the
Israelites.
22
The
Israelites
got
all
of
the
land
of
the
Amorites
from
the
Arnon
River
to
the
Jabbok
River.
The
land
also
went
from
the
desert
to
the
Jordan
River.
23
"It
was
the
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel,
who
forced
the
Amorites
to
leave
their
land.
And
he
gave
the
land
to
the
Israelites.
Do
you
think
you
can
make
the
Israelites
leave
this
land?
24
Surely
you
can
live
in
the
land
that
your
god
Chemosh
has
given
to
you.
So
we
will
live
in
the
land
that
the
Lord
our
God
has
given
to
us.
25
Are
you
any
better
than
Balak
son
of
Zippor?
He
was
the
king
of
the
land
of
Moab.
Did
he
argue
with
the
Israelites?
Did
he
actually
fight
with
the
Israelites?
26
The
Israelites
have
lived
in
the
city
of
Heshbon
and
the
towns
around
it
for
300
years.
They
have
lived
in
the
city
of
Aroer
and
the
towns
around
it
for
300
years.
They
have
lived
in
all
the
cities
along
the
side
of
the
Arnon
River
for
300
years.
Why
have
you
not
tried
to
take
these
cities
in
all
that
time?
27
The
Israelites
have
not
sinned
against
you.
But
you
are
doing
a
very
bad
thing
against
them.
May
the
Lord,
the
true
Judge,
decide
whether
the
Israelites
or
the
Ammonites
are
right."
28
The
king
of
the
Ammonites
refused
to
listen
to
this
message
from
Jephthah.
29
Then
the
Spirit
of
the
Lord
came
on
Jephthah,
and
he
passed
through
the
area
of
Gilead
and
Manasseh.
He
went
through
the
city
of
Mizpah
in
Gilead
on
his
way
to
the
land
of
the
Ammonites.
30
Jephthah
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord.
He
said,
"If
you
will
let
me
defeat
the
Ammonites,
31
I
will
give
you
the
first
thing
that
comes
out
of
my
house
when
I
come
back
from
the
victory.
I
will
give
it
to
the
Lord
as
a
burnt
offering.
"
32
Then
Jephthah
went
to
the
land
of
the
Ammonites.
He
fought
the
Ammonites,
and
the
Lord
helped
him
defeat
them.
33
He
defeated
them
from
the
city
of
Aroer
to
the
city
of
Minnith.
Jephthah
captured
20
cities.
Then
he
fought
the
Ammonites
to
the
city
of
Abel
Keramim.
The
Israelites
defeated
them.
It
was
a
very
great
defeat
for
the
Ammonites.
34
Jephthah
went
back
to
Mizpah.
He
went
to
his
house,
and
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him.
She
was
playing
a
tambourine
and
dancing.
She
was
his
only
daughter,
and
Jephthah
loved
her
very
much.
He
did
not
have
any
other
sons
or
daughters.
35
When
Jephthah
saw
that
his
daughter
was
the
first
thing
to
come
out
of
his
house,
he
tore
his
clothes
to
show
his
sadness.
Then
he
said,
"Oh,
my
daughter!
You
have
ruined
me!
You
have
made
me
very
sad!
I
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord,
and
I
cannot
change
it!"
36
Then
his
daughter
said
to
Jephthah,
"Father,
you
have
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord,
so
keep
your
promise.
Do
what
you
said
you
would
do.
After
all,
the
Lord
did
help
you
defeat
your
enemies,
the
Ammonites."
37
Then
Jephthah's
daughter
said
to
her
father,
"But
do
this
one
thing
for
me
first.
Let
me
be
alone
for
two
months.
Let
me
go
to
the
mountains.
I
will
not
marry
and
have
children,
so
let
me
and
my
friends
go
and
cry
together."
38
Jephthah
said,
"Go."
He
sent
her
away
for
two
months.
Jephthah's
daughter
and
her
friends
stayed
in
the
mountains.
They
cried
for
her
because
she
would
not
marry
and
have
children.
39
At
the
end
of
two
months,
Jephthah's
daughter
returned
to
her
father,
and
Jephthah
did
what
he
promised
to
the
Lord.
His
daughter
never
had
sexual
relations
with
anyone.
So
this
became
a
custom
in
Israel.
40
Every
year
the
young
women
of
Israel
would
go
out
for
four
days
to
remember
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
from
Gilead
and
to
cry
for
her.
Judges 18:29
29
The
people
of
Dan
gave
the
city
a
new
name.
That
city
had
been
called
Laish,
but
they
changed
the
name
to
Dan.
They
named
the
city
after
their
ancestor
Dan,
one
of
the
sons
of
Israel.
Judges 20:11
11
So
all
the
men
of
Israel
gathered
together
at
the
city
of
Gibeah,
united
together
and
in
agreement
as
to
what
they
were
doing.
Judges 21:5
5
Then
the
Israelites
said,
"Are
there
any
tribes
of
Israel
who
did
not
come
here
to
meet
with
us
before
the
Lord?"
They
asked
this
question
because
they
had
made
a
serious
promise.
They
had
promised
that
anyone
who
did
not
come
together
with
the
other
tribes

me
when
I
return
in

children
of
Ammon,

I
will
offer
him
up

a

32
And
Jephthae
advanced
to
meet
the
sons
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them;
and
the
Lord
delivered
them
into
his
hand.
33
And
he
smote
them
from
Aroer
till
one

to
Arnon,
in
number
twenty
cities,
and
as
far
as
Ebelcharmim,
with
a
very
great
destruction:
and
the
children
of
Ammon
were
straitened
before
the
children
of
Israel.
34
And
Jephthae
came
to
Massepha
to
his
house;
and
behold,
his
daughter
came
forth
to
meet
him
with
timbrels
and
dances;
and
she
was
his
only
child,
he
had
not
another
son
or
daughter.
35
And
it
came
to
pass
when
he
saw
her,
that
he
rent
his
garments,
and
said,
Ah,
ah,
my
daughter,

and
thou
wast

my
trouble;
and
I
have
opened
my
mouth
against
thee
to
the
Lord,
and
I
shall
not
be
able
to
return
from
it.
36
And
she
said
to
him,
Father,
hast
thou
opened
thy
mouth
to
the
Lord?
Do
to
me
accordingly
as
the

out
of

mouth,
in
that
the
Lord
has
wrought
vengeance
for
thee
on
thine
enemies
of
the
children

Ammon.
37
And
she
said
to
her
father,

my

now

this
thing:
let

two
months,
and

will
go
up

Then
Israel
sent
men
to
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
"We
ask
you
to
let
us
pass
through
your
land."
But
the
king
of
Edom
would
not
listen.
They
asked
the
king
of
Moab
also.
But
he
would
not
let
them
pass
through.
So
Israel
stayed
at
Kadesh.
18
'Then
Israel
went
through
the
desert
and
around
the
lands
of
Edom
and
Moab.
They
came
to
the
east
side
of
the
land
of
Moab.
There
they
set
up
their
tents
on
the
other
side
of
the
Arnon.
But
they
did
not
go
into
the
land
of
Moab.
For
the
Arnon
flowed
along
the
side
of
Moab.
19
Israel
sent
men
to
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
the
king
of
Heshbon,
saying,
"We
ask
you
to
let
us
pass
through
your
land
to
our
place."
20
But
Sihon
did
not
trust
Israel.
He
would
not
let
them
pass
through
his
land.
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people
together.
They
set
up
their
tents
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
with
Israel.
21
The
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel,
gave
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel.
They
won
the
war
against
Sihon.
So
Israel
took
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
people
of
that
country.
22
They
took
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
from
the
Arnon
as
far
as
the
Jabbok,
and
from
the
desert
as
far
as
the
Jordan.
23
'So
the
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel,
drove
the
Amorites
away
from
His
people
Israel.
Now
are
you
to
take
the
land
for
your
own?
24
Do
you
not
keep
for
your
own
what
your
god
Chemosh
gives
you?
We
will
keep
the
land
of
the
people
the
Lord
our
God
drove
away
for
us.
25
Are
you
any
better
than
Balak
the
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
Did
he
ever
fight
with
Israel?
Did
he
ever
go
to
war
against
them?
26
While
Israel
lived
in
Heshbon
and
its
towns
and
Aroer
and
its
towns
and
in
all
the
cities
beside
the
Arnon
for
300
years,
why
did
you
not
take
them
again
during
that
time?
27
I
have
not
sinned
against
you.
But
you
are
doing
wrong
to
me
by
making
war
against
me.
The
Lord
is
the
judge.
May
He
decide
today
between
the
people
of
Israel
and
the
people
of
Ammon.'
"
28
But
the
king
of
the
people
of
Ammon
would
not
listen
to
what
Jephthah
said.
29
The
Spirit
of
the
Lord
came
upon
Jephthah.
So
he
passed
through
Gilead
and
Manasseh
and
through
Mizpah
of
Gilead.
He
went
from
Mizpah
of
Gilead
to
the
people
of
Ammon.
30
Jephthah
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord
and
said,
"You
give
the
people
of
Ammon
into
my
hand.
31
And
I
will
give
to
the
Lord
whatever
comes
out
of
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
people
of
Ammon.
I
will
give
it
to
the
Lord
as
a
burnt
gift."
32
Then
Jephthah
crossed
over
to
fight
against
the
people
of
Ammon.
And
the
Lord
gave
them
into
his
hand.
33
He
killed
many
of
them
from
Aroer
to
Minnith,
through
twenty
cities,
as
far
as
Abelkeramin.
The
people
of
Ammon
were
destroyed
in
front
of
the
people
of
Israel.
34
Then
Jephthah
came
to
his
home
at
Mizpah.
His
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
music
and
dancing.
She
was
his
one
and
only
child.
He
had
no
other
sons
or
daughters.
35
When
he
saw
her,
he
tore
his
clothes
and
said,
"It
is
bad,
my
daughter!
You
have
made
me
very
sad.
You
have
brought
much
trouble
to
me.
For
I
have
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord,
and
I
must
keep
it."
36
She
said
to
him,
"My
father,
you
have
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord.
Do
to
me
what
you
have
promised
you
would
do.
Because
the
Lord
has
punished
the
people
of
Ammon,
who
fought
against
you.
37
But
do
this
for
me.
Let
me
alone
for
two
months.
So
I
and
my
friends
may
go
to
the
mountains
and
cry
because
I
will
never
have
a
man."
38
Jephthah
said,
"Go."
He
sent
her
away
for
two
months
with
her
friends.
And
they
cried
on
the
mountains
because
she
would
never
have
a
man.
39
She
returned
to
her
father
after
two
months.
And
he
did
what
he
promised
the
Lord
and
she
died
without
having
a
man.
So
it
became
the
way
in
Israel
40
that
the
daughters
of
Israel
went
to
have
sorrow
for
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
for
four
days
each
year.
Judges 18:29
29
They
called
the
name
of
the
city
Dan,
after
the
name
of
Dan
their
father
who
was
born
in
Israel.
The
name
of
the
city
had
been
Laish
before.
Judges 20:11
11
All
the
men
of
Israel
were
gathered
against
the
city,
together
as
one
man.
Judges 21:5
5
Then
the
people
of
Israel
said,
"Who
among
all
the
family
groups
of
Israel
did
not
come
with
the
people
to
the
Lord?"
For
they
had
made
a
promise
about
the
one
who
did
not
come
to
the
Lord
at
Mizpah,
saying,
"For
sure
he
will
be
put
to
death."
1 Samuel 3:20
20
All
Israel
from
Dan
to
Beersheba
knew
that
Samuel
had
become
a
man
of
God.
1 Samuel 7:5
5
Then
Samuel
said,
"Gather
all
Israel
together
at
Mizpah,
and
I
will
pray
to
the
Lord
for
you."
1 Samuel 10:17
17
Then
Samuel
called
the
people
together
to
the
Lord
at
Mizpah.
1 Samuel 11:7
7
He
took
two
bulls
and
cut
them
in
pieces
and
sent
them
through
the
land
of
Israel
with
the
men
who
had
brought
the
news,
saying,
"This
will
be
done
to
the
bulls
of
those
who
will
not
come
out
after
Saul
and
Samuel."
The
fear
of
the
Lord
came
upon
the
people,
and
they
all
came
out
together.
2 Samuel 3:10
10
He
has
promised
to
build
the
throne
of
David
over
Israel
and
over
Judah,
from
Dan
to
Beersheba."
2 Samuel 24:2
2
So
the
king
said
to
Joab
the
captain
of
the
army
who
was
with
him,
"Go
through
all
the
families
of
Israel,
from
Dan
to
Beersheba.
Number
the
people,
so
I
may
know
how
many
there
are."

and

them.
Judges 10:17

camped
in
Gilead.

1
Jephthah
was
a
strong
soldier
from
Gilead.
His
father
was
named
Gilead,
and
his
mother
was
a
prostitute.
2
Gilead's
wife
had
several
sons.
When
they
grew
up,
they
forced
Jephthah
to
leave
his
home,
saying
to
him,
"You
will
not
get
any
of
our
father's
property,
because
you
are
the
son
of
another
woman."
3
So
Jephthah
ran
away
from
his
brothers
and
lived
in
the
land
of
Tob.
There
some
worthless
men
began
to
follow
him.
4
After
a
time
the
Ammonites
fought
against
Israel.
5
When
the
Ammonites
made
war
against
Israel,
the
older
leaders
of
Gilead
went
to
Jephthah
to
bring
him
back
from
Tob.
6
They
said
to
him,
"Come
and
lead
our
army
so
we
can
fight
the
Ammonites."
7
But
Jephthah
said
to
them,
"Didn't
you
hate
me?
You
forced
me
to
leave
my
father's
house.
Why
are
you
coming
to
me
now
that
you
are
in
trouble?"
8
The
older
leaders
of
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
"It
is
because
of
those
troubles
that
we
come
to
you
now.
Please
come
with
us
and
fight
against
the
Ammonites.
You
will
be
the
ruler
over
everyone
who
lives
in
Gilead."
9
Then
Jephthah
answered,
"If
you
take
me
back
to
Gilead
to
fight
the
Ammonites
and
the
Lord
helps
me
win,
I
will
be
your
ruler."
10
The
older
leaders
of
Gilead
said
to
him,
"The
Lord
is
listening
to
everything
we
are
saying.
We
promise
to
do
all
that
you
tell
us
to
do."
11
So
Jephthah
went
with
the
older
leaders
of
Gilead,
and
the
people
made
him
their
leader
and
commander
of
their
army.
Jephthah
repeated
all
of
his
words
in
front
of
the
Lord
at
Mizpah.
12
Jephthah
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
Ammonites,
asking,
"What
have
you
got
against
Israel?
Why
have
you
come
to
attack
our
land?"
13
The
king
of
the
Ammonites
answered
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
"We
are
fighting
Israel
because
you
took
our
land
when
you
came
up
from
Egypt.
You
took
our
land
from
the
Arnon
River
to
the
Jabbok
River
to
the
Jordan
River.
Now
give
our
land
back
to
us
peacefully."
14
Jephthah
sent
the
messengers
to
the
Ammonite
king
again.
15
They
said:
"This
is
what
Jephthah
says:
Israel
did
not
take
the
land
of
the
people
of
Moab
or
Ammon.
16
When
the
Israelites
came
out
of
Egypt,
they
went
into
the
desert
to
the
Red
Sea
and
then
to
Kadesh.
17
Israel
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
'Let
the
people
of
Israel
go
across
your
land.'
But
the
king
of
Edom
refused.
We
sent
the
same
message
to
the
king
of
Moab,
but
he
also
refused.
So
the
Israelites
stayed
at
Kadesh.
18
"Then
the
Israelites
went
into
the
desert
around
the
borders
of
the
lands
of
Edom
and
Moab.
Israel
went
east
of
the
land
of
Moab
and
camped
on
the
other
side
of
the
Arnon
River,
the
border
of
Moab.
They
did
not
cross
it
to
go
into
the
land
of
Moab.
19
"Then
Israel
sent
messengers
to
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
king
of
the
city
of
Heshbon,
asking,
'Let
the
people
of
Israel
pass
through
your
land
to
go
to
our
land.'
20
But
Sihon
did
not
trust
the
Israelites
to
cross
his
land.
So
he
gathered
all
of
his
people
and
camped
at
Jahaz
and
fought
with
Israel.
21
"But
the
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel,
handed
Sihon
and
his
army
over
to
Israel.
All
the
land
of
the
Amorites
became
the
property
of
Israel.
22
So
Israel
took
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites
from
the
Arnon
River
to
the
Jabbok
River,
from
the
desert
to
the
Jordan
River.
23
"It
was
the
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel,
who
forced
out
the
Amorites
ahead
of
the
people
of
Israel.
So
do
you
think
you
can
make
them
leave?
24
Take
the
land
that
your
god
Chemosh
has
given
you.
We
will
live
in
the
land
the
Lord
our
God
has
given
us!
25
"Are
you
any
better
than
Balak
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
Did
he
ever
quarrel
or
fight
with
the
people
of
Israel?
26
For
three
hundred
years
the
Israelites
have
lived
in
Heshbon
and
Aroer
and
the
towns
around
them
and
in
all
the
cities
along
the
Arnon
River.
Why
have
you
not
taken
these
cities
back
in
all
that
time?
27
I
have
not
sinned
against
you,
but
you
are
sinning
against
me
by
making
war
on
me.
May
the
Lord,
the
Judge,
decide
whether
the
Israelites
or
the
Ammonites
are
right."
28
But
the
king
of
the
Ammonites
ignored
this
message
from
Jephthah.
29
Then
the
Spirit
of
the
Lord
entered
Jephthah.
Jephthah
passed
through
Gilead
and
Manasseh
and
the
city
of
Mizpah
in
Gilead
to
the
land
of
the
Ammonites.
30
Jephthah
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord,
saying,
"If
you
will
hand
over
the
Ammonites
to
me,
31
I
will
give
you
as
a
burnt
offering
the
first
thing
that
comes
out
of
my
house
to
meet
me
when
I
return
from
the
victory.
It
will
be
the
Lord's."
32
Then
Jephthah
went
over
to
fight
the
Ammonites,
and
the
Lord
handed
them
over
to
him.
33
In
a
great
defeat
Jephthah
struck
them
down
from
the
city
of
Aroer
to
the
area
of
Minnith,
and
twenty
cities
as
far
as
the
city
of
Abel
Keramim.
So
the
Ammonites
were
defeated
by
the
Israelites.
34
When
Jephthah
returned
to
his
home
in
Mizpah,
his
daughter
was
the
first
one
to
come
out
to
meet
him,
playing
a
tambourine
and
dancing.
She
was
his
only
child;
he
had
no
other
sons
or
daughters.
35
When
Jephthah
saw
his
daughter,
he
tore
his
clothes
to
show
his
sorrow.
He
said,
"My
daughter!
You
have
made
me
so
sad
because
I
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord,
and
I
cannot
break
it!"
36
Then
his
daughter
said,
"Father,
you
made
a
promise
to
the
Lord.
So
do
to
me
just
what
you
promised,
because
the
Lord
helped
you
defeat
your
enemies,
the
Ammonites."
37
She
also
said,
"But
let
me
do
one
thing.
Let
me
be
alone
for
two
months
to
go
to
the
mountains.
Since
I
will
never
marry,
let
me
and
my
friends
go
and
cry
together."
38
Jephthah
said,
"Go."
So
he
sent
her
away
for
two
months.
She
and
her
friends
stayed
in
the
mountains
and
cried
for
her
because
she
would
never
marry.
39
After
two
months
she
returned
to
her
father,
and
Jephthah
did
to
her
what
he
had
promised.
Jephthah's
daughter
never
had
a
husband.
From
this
came
a
custom
in
Israel
that
40
every
year
the
young
women
of
Israel
would
go
out
for
four
days
to
remember
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
from
Gilead.
Judges 18:29
29
They
changed
the
name
of
Laish
to
Dan,
naming
it
for
their
ancestor
Dan,
one
of
the
sons
of
Israel.
Judges 20:11
11
So
all
the
men
of
Israel
were
united
and
gathered
against
the
city.
Judges 21:5
5
Then
the
Israelites
asked,
"Did
any
tribe
of
Israel
not
come
here
to
meet
with
us
in
the
presence
of
the
Lord?"
They
asked
this
question
because
they
had
sworn
that
anyone
who
did
not
meet
with
them
at
Mizpah
would
be
killed.
1 Samuel 3:20
20
Then
all
Israel,
from
Dan
to
Beersheba,
knew
Samuel
was
a
true
prophet
of
the
Lord.
1 Samuel 7:5
5
Samuel
said,
"All
Israel
must
meet
at
Mizpah,
and
I
will
pray
to
the
Lord
for
you."
1 Samuel 10:17
17
Samuel
called
all
the
people
of
Israel
to
meet
with
the
Lord
at
Mizpah.
1 Samuel 11:7
7
So
he
took
a
pair
of
oxen
and
cut
them
into
pieces.
Then
he
gave
the
pieces
of
the
oxen
to
messengers
and
ordered
them
to
carry
them
through
all
the
land
of
Israel.
The
messengers
said,
"This
is
what
will
happen
to
the
oxen
of
anyone
who
does
not
follow
Saul
and
Samuel."
So
the
people
became
very
afraid
of
the
Lord.
They
all
came
together
as
if
they
were
one
person.
2 Samuel 3:10
10
I
will
take
the
kingdom
from
the
family
of
Saul
and
make
David
king
of
Israel
and
Judah,
from
Dan
to
Beersheba!"
2 Samuel 24:2
2
So
King
David
said
to
Joab,
the
commander
of
the
army,
"Go
through
all
the
tribes
of
Israel,
from
Dan
to
Beersheba,
and
count
the
people.
Then
I
will
know
how
many
there
are."

after
some
time,
the

fought
with
Israel.

it
happened
when
the
sons
of
Ammon
fought
with
Israel,
the
elders
of
Gilead
went
to
bring
Jephthah
from
the
land
of
Tob.

they
said
to
Jephthah,
Come,
and
you
shall
be
our
commander,
that
we
may
fight
against
the
sons
of
Ammon.

And
Jephthah
said
to
the
elders
of
Gilead,
Have
you
not
hated
me?
Yea,
you
threw
me
out
from
my
father's
house.
Why
have
you
come
to
me
when
you
are

the
elders
of
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
For
this
reason
we
have
come
back
to
you
now;
and
you
shall

the

and
Jehovah

them
up

shall
I

And
the
elders
of
Gilead
said
to

Jehovah
shall
be
witness
between
us;
surely
we
will
do
according
to
your
word.
11
And
Jephthah
went
with
the
elders
of
Gilead,
and
the
people
appointed
him
head
over
them,
and
as
commander.
And
Jephthah
spoke
all
his
words
before
Jehovah
in
Mizpeh.
12
And
Jephthah
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
sons
of
Ammon,
saying,
What
have
you
to
do
with
me,
that
you
have
come
in
to
me
to
fight
in
my
land?
13
And
the
king
of
the
sons
of
Ammon
said
to
the
messengers
of
Jephthah,
Because
Israel
took
my
land
when
he
came
up
out
of
Egypt,
from
Arnon
even
to
the
Jabbok,
and
to
the
Jordan.
And
now,
restore
them
in
peace.
14
And
Jephthah
again
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
sons
of
Ammon,
15
and
said
to
him,
So
says
Jephthah,
Israel
did
not
take
the
land
of
Moab,
and
the
land
of
the
sons
of
Ammon.
16
For
when
they
came
up
out
of
Egypt,
Israel
went
in
the
wilderness
to
the
Sea
of
Reeds,
and
came
in
at
Kadesh.
17
And
Israel
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
Please
let
me
pass
on
through
your
land,
and
the
king
of
Edom
did
not
listen.
And
Israel
sent
also
to
the
king
of
Moab,
and
he
was
not
willing.
And
Israel
remained
in
Kadesh.
18
And
he
went
through
the
wilderness,
and
went
around
the
land
of
Edom,
and
the
land
of
Moab,
and
came
in
at
the
rising
of
the
sun
to
the
land
of
Moab.
And
they
camped
beyond
Arnon,
and
did
not
come
into
the
border
of
Moab,
for
Arnon
was
the
border
of
Moab.
19
And
Israel
sent
messengers
to
Sihon,
the
king
of
the
Amorites
the
king
of
Heshbon,
and
Israel
said
to
him,
Please
let
us
pass
on
through
your
land,
to
my
place.
20
And
Sihon
did
not
trust
Israel
to
pass
on
through
his
border.
And
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people
and
they
camped
in
Jahaz,
and
fought
with
Israel.
21
And
Jehovah
the
God
of
Israel
gave
Sihon
and
all
his
people
into
the
hand
of
Israel,
and
they
struck
them.
And
Israel
took
possession
of
all
the
land
of
the
Amorites,
the
inhabitants
of
that
land.
22
And
they
took
possession
of
all
the
border
of
the
Amorites
from
Arnon
and
to
the
Jabbok,
and
from
the
wilderness,
and
to
the
Jordan.
23
And
now,
Jehovah
our
God
has
dispossessed
the
Amorite
from
before
His
people
Israel.
And
would
you
possess
it?
24
Whatever
Chemosh
your
god
causes
you
to
possess,
do
you
not
possess
it?
And
all
that
which
Jehovah
our
God
has
dispossessed
from
before
us,
we
will
possess!
25
And
now,
are
you
at
all
any
better
than
Balak
the
son
of
Zippor,
the
king
of
Moab?
And
striving,
did
he
strive
with
Israel?
Did
he
ever
fight
against
them?
26
When
Israel
lived
in
Heshbon
and
its
towns,
and
in
Aroer
and
in
its
towns,
in
all
the
cities
by
the
sides
of
Arnon
three
hundred
years,
then
why
have
you
not
delivered
them
in
that
time?
27
So
I
have
not
sinned
against
you,
and
you
are
doing
me
wrong
to
fight
against
me.
Jehovah
the
Judge
shall
judge
today
between
the
sons
of
Israel
and
the
sons
of
Ammon.
28
And
the
king
of
the
sons
of
Ammon
did
not
listen
to
the
words
of
Jephthah
which
he
sent
to
him.
29
And
the
Spirit
of
Jehovah
was
on
Jephthah.
And
he
passed
through
Gilead
and
Manasseh,
and
passed
through
Mizpeh
of
Gilead,
and
from
Mizpeh
of
Gilead
he
passed
on
to
the
sons
of
Ammon.
30
And
Jephthah
vowed
a
vow
to
Jehovah,
and
said,
If
You
will
indeed
give
the
sons
of
Ammon
into
my
hand,
31
then
it
shall
be
that
anything
which
comes
out
from
the
doors
of
my
house
to
meet
me
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
sons
of
Ammon,
it
shall
belong
to
Jehovah;
and
I
will
offer
it
instead
of
a
burnt
offering.
32
And
Jephthah
passed
over
to
the
sons
of
Ammon
to
fight
against
them.
And
Jehovah
delivered
them
into
his
hand.
33
And
he
struck
them
from
Aroer
until
you
come
to
Minnith,
even
twenty
cities,
and
to
the
Meadow
of
the
Vineyard,
a
very
great
destruction.
And
the
sons
of
Ammon
were
humbled
before
the
sons
of
Israel.
34
And
Jephthah
came
to
Mizpeh
to
his
house.
And,
behold
his
daughter
came
out
to
meet
him
with
timbrels,
and
with
choruses.
And
she
only,
she
alone;
there
was
no
other
son
or
daughter
to
him.
35
And
it
happened
when
he
saw
her,
he
tore
his
garments,
and
said,
Alas,
my
daughter!
You
have
brought
me
very
low,
and
you
are
among
those
making
me
low.
And
surely
I
have
opened
my
mouth
to
Jehovah,
and
I
am
not
able
to
take
it
back.
36
And
she
said
to
him,
My
father,
you
have
opened
your
mouth
to
Jehovah.
Do
to
me
whatever
has
gone
out
of
your
mouth,
since
Jehovah
has
taken
vengeance
for
you
on
your
enemies,
on
the
sons
of
Ammon.
37
And
she
said
to
her
father,
Let
this
thing
be
done
to
me.
Leave
me
alone
two
months,
and
let
me
go
and
descend
on
the
mountains.
And
I
will
weep
for
my
virginity,
my
friends
and
I.
38
And
he
said,
Go.
And
he
sent
her
away
two
months.
And
she
went,
she
and
her
friends.
And
she
wept
for
her
virginity
on
the
mountains.
39
And
it
happened
at
the
end
of
two
months,
she
returned
to
her
father.
And
he
did
to
her
his
vow
which
he
had
vowed.
And
she
never
knew
a
man.
And
it
is
a
fixed
custom
in
Israel,
40
from
days
to
days,
the
daughters
of
Israel
go
to
tell
again
of
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
the
Gileadite,
four
days
in
a
year.
Judges 18:29
29
And
they
called
the
name
of
the
city,
Dan,
by
the
name

who
was
born
to
Israel.
And
yet
Laish
was
the
name
of
the
city
at
first.

every

And
the
sons
of
Israel
said,
Who
is
he
that
did
not
come
up
in
the
assembly
out
of
all
the
tribes
of
Israel
to
Jehovah?
For
a
great
oath
had
been
undertaken
concerning
him
that
did
not
come
up
to
Jehovah
to
Mizpeh
saying,
Dying
he
shall
die.
1 Samuel 3:20
20
And
all
Israel
knew,
from
Dan
even
to
Beer-sheba,
that
Samuel

confirmed

be
a
prophet
to
Jehovah.
1 Samuel 7:5
5
And
Samuel
said,
Gather
all
Israel
to
Mizpah,
and
I
will
pray
to
Jehovah
for
you.
1 Samuel 10:17
17
And
Samuel
called
the
people
to
Jehovah,
to
Mizpah.
1 Samuel 11:7
7
And
he
took
the
team
of
oxen
and
cut
them
in
pieces,
and
he
sent
them
into
all
the
boundary
of
Israel,
by
the
hand
of
the
messengers,
saying,
Whoever
does
not
come
out
after
Saul
and
after
Samuel,
so
it
shall
be
done
to
his
oxen.
And
the
fear
of
Jehovah
fell
on
the
people.
And
they
came
out
as
one
man.

the

of
the
people.

1
Jephthah
the
Gileadite
was
a
great
warrior,
but
he
was
the
son
of
a
prostitute,
and
Gilead
was
his
father.
2
Gilead's
wife
bore
him
sons,
and
when
they
grew
up,
they
drove
Jephthah
out
and
said
to
him,
"You

because
you

3
So
Jephthah
fled
from
his
brothers
and
lived
in
the
land
of
Tob.
Then
some
lawless
men
joined
Jephthah
and
traveled
with
him.
4
Some
time
later,
the
Ammonites
fought
against
Israel.
5
When
the
Ammonites
made
war
with
Israel,
the
elders
of
Gilead
went
to
get
Jephthah
from
the
land
of
Tob.
6
They
said
to
him,
"Come,
be
our
commander,
and
let's
fight
against
the
Ammonites."
7
Jephthah
replied
to
the
elders
of
Gilead,
"Didn't
you
hate
me
and
drive
me
from
my
father's
house?
Why
then
have
you
come
to
me
now
when
you're
in
trouble?"
8
They
answered
Jephthah,
"Since
that's
true,
we
now
turn
to
you.
Come
with
us,
fight
the
Ammonites,
and
you
will
become
leader
of
all
the
inhabitants
of
Gilead."
9
So
Jephthah
said
to
them,
"If
you
are
bringing
me
back
to
fight
the
Ammonites
and
the
LORD
gives
them
to
me,
I
will
be
your
leader."
10
The
elders
of
Gilead
said
to
Jephthah,
"The
LORD
is
our
witness
if
we
don't
do
as
you
say."
11
So
Jephthah
went
with
the
elders
of
Gilead.
The
people
put
him
over
themselves
as
leader
and
commander,
and
Jephthah
repeated
all
his
terms
in
the
presence
of
the
LORD
at
Mizpah.
12
Jephthah
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
Ammonites,
saying,
"What
do
you
have
against
me
that
you
have
come
to
fight
against
me
in
my
land?"
13
The
king
of
the
Ammonites
said
to
Jephthah's
messengers,
"When
Israel
came
from
Egypt,
they
seized
my
land
from
the
Arnon
to
the
Jabbok
and
the
Jordan.
Now
restore
it
peaceably."
14
Jephthah
again
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
Ammonites
15
to
tell
him,
"This
is
what
Jephthah
says:
Israel
did
not
take
away
the
land
of
Moab
or
the
land
of
the
Ammonites.
16
But
when
they
came
from
Egypt,
Israel
traveled
through
the
wilderness
to
the
Red
Sea
and
came
to
Kadesh.
17
Israel
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Edom,
saying,
'Please
let
us
travel
through
your
land,'
but
the
king
of
Edom
would
not
listen.
They
also
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
Moab,
but
he
refused.
So
Israel
stayed
in
Kadesh.
18
"Then
they
traveled
through
the
wilderness
and
around
the
lands
of
Edom
and
Moab.
They
came
to
the
east
side
of
the
land
of
Moab
and
camped
on
the
other
side
of
the
Arnon
but
did
not
enter
into
the
territory
of
Moab,
for
the
Arnon
was
the

Moab.
19
"Then
Israel
sent
messengers
to
Sihon
king
of
the
Amorites,
king
of
Heshbon.
Israel
said
to
him,
'Please

us
travel
through
your
land
to
our
country,'
20
but
Sihon
did
not
trust
Israel.
Instead,
Sihon
gathered
all
his
people,
camped
at
Jahaz,
and
fought

Israel.
21
Then
the
LORD
God
of
Israel
handed
over
Sihon
and
all
his
people
to
Israel,
and
they
defeated
them.
So
Israel
took
possession
of
the
entire
land
of
the
Amorites
who
lived
in
that
country.
22
They
took
possession
of
all
the
territory
of
the
Amorites
from
the
Arnon
to
the
Jabbok
and
from
the
wilderness
to
the
Jordan.
23
"The
LORD
God
of
Israel
has
now
driven
out
the
Amorites
before
His
people
Israel,
but
will
you
drive
us
out?
24
Isn't
it
true
that
you
may
possess
whatever
your
god
Chemosh
drives
out
for
you,
and
we
may
possess
everything
the
LORD
our
God
drives
out
before
us?
25
Now
are
you
any
better
than
Balak
son
of
Zippor,
king
of
Moab?
Did
he
ever
contend
with
Israel
or
fight
against
them?
26
While
Israel
lived
300
years
in
Heshbon
and
its
villages,
in
Aroer
and
its
villages,
and
in
all
the
cities
that
are
on
the
banks
of
the
Arnon,
why
didn't
you
take
them
back
at
that
time?
27
I
have
not
sinned
against
you,
but
you
have
wronged
me
by
fighting
against
me.
Let
the
LORD
who
is
the
Judge
decide
today
between
the
Israelites
and
the
Ammonites."
28
But
the
king
of
the
Ammonites
would
not
listen
to
Jephthah's
message
that
he
sent
him.
29
The
Spirit
of
the
LORD
came
on
Jephthah,
who
traveled
through
Gilead
and
Manasseh,
and
then
through
Mizpah
of
Gilead.
He
crossed
over
to
the
Ammonites
from
Mizpah
of
Gilead.
30
Jephthah
made
this
vow
to
the
LORD:
"If
You
will
hand
over
the
Ammonites
to
me,
31
whatever
comes
out
of
the
doors
of
my
house
to
greet
me
when
I
return
in
peace
from
the
Ammonites
will
belong
to
the
LORD,
and
I
will
offer
it
as
a
burnt
offering."
32
Jephthah
crossed
over
to
the
Ammonites
to
fight
against
them,
and
the
LORD
handed
them
over
to
him.
33
He
defeated
20
of
their
cities
with
a
great
slaughter
from
Aroer
all
the
way
to
the
entrance
of
Minnith
and
to
Abel-keramim.
So
the
Ammonites
were
subdued
before
the
Israelites.
34
When
Jephthah
went
to
his
home
in
Mizpah,
there
was
his
daughter,
coming
out
to
meet
him
with
tambourines
and
dancing!
She
was
his
only
child;
he
had
no
other
son
or
daughter
besides
her.
35
When
he
saw
her,
he
tore
his
clothes
and
said,
"No!
Not
my
daughter!
You
have
devastated
me!
You
have
brought
great
misery
on
me.
I
have
given
my
word
to
the
LORD
and
cannot
take
it
back.
36
Then
she
said
to
him,
"My
father,
you
have
given
your
word
to
the
LORD.
Do
to
me
as
you
have
said,
for
the
LORD
brought
vengeance
on
your
enemies,
the
Ammonites."
37
She
also
said
to
her
father,
"Let
me
do
this
one
thing:
Let
me
wander
two
months
through
the
mountains
with
my
friends
and
mourn
my
virginity."
38
"Go,"
he
said.
And
he
sent
her
away
two
months.
So
she
left
with
her
friends
and
mourned
her
virginity
as
she
wandered
through
the
mountains.
39
At
the
end
of
two
months,
she
returned
to
her
father,
and
he
kept
the
vow
he
had
made
about
her.
And
she
had
never
been
intimate
with
a
man.
Now
it
became
a
custom
in
Israel
40
that
four
days
each
year
the
young
women
of
Israel
would
commemorate
the
daughter
of
Jephthah
the
Gileadite.
Judges 18:29
29
They
named
the
city
Dan,
after
the
name
of
their
ancestor
Dan,
who
was
born
to
Israel.
The
city
was
formerly
named
Laish.
Judges 20:11
11
So
all
the
men
of
Israel
gathered
united
against
the
city.
Judges 21:5
5
The
Israelites
asked,
"Who
of
all
the
tribes
of
Israel
didn't
come
to
the
LORD
with
the
assembly?"
For
a
great
oath
had
been
taken
that
anyone
who
had
not
come
to
the
LORD
at
Mizpah
would
certainly
be
put
to
death.
1 Samuel 3:20
20
All
Israel
from
Dan
to
Beer-sheba
knew
that
Samuel
was
a
confirmed
prophet
of
the
LORD.
1 Samuel 7:5

"Gather
all
Israel
at
Mizpah,
and
I
will
pray
to
the
LORD
on
your
behalf."
1 Samuel 10:17
17
Samuel
summoned
the
people
to
the
LORD
at
Mizpah
1 Samuel 11:7
7
He
took
a
team
of
oxen,
cut
them
in
pieces,
and
sent
them
throughout
the
land
of
Israel
by
messengers
who
said,
"This
is
what
will
be
done
to
the
ox
of
anyone
who
doesn't
march
behind
Saul
and
Samuel."As
a
result,
the
terror
of
the
LORD
fell
on
the
people,
and
they
went
out
united.
2 Samuel 3:10
10
to
transfer
the
kingdom
from
the
house
of
Saul
and
establish
the
throne
of
David
over
Israel
and
Judah
from
Dan
to
Beer-sheba."
2 Samuel 24:2
2
So
the
king
said
to
Joab,
the
commander
of
his
army,
"Go
through
all
the
tribes
of
Israel
from
Dan
to
Beer-sheba
and
register
the
troops
so
I
can
know
their
number."
