Joshua 21:31 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 The family rulers of the Levite tribe went to talk to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the rulers of the other tribes of Israel.

2 At Shiloh in the land of Canaan, the Levite rulers said to them, "The Lord gave Moses a command. He commanded that you give us towns to live in and that you give us fields where our animals can eat."

3 So the Israelites obeyed this command from the Lord and gave the Levites these towns and the land around them for their animals:

4 The Kohath family groups were descendants of Aaron the priest from the tribe of Levi. Part of the Kohath family was given 13 towns in the areas that belonged to Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

5 The other Kohath families were given ten towns in the areas that belonged to Ephraim, Dan, and half of Manasseh.

6 The people from the Gershon family were given 13 towns. These towns were in the areas that belonged to Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half of Manasseh that was in Bashan.

7 The people from the Merari family were given twelve towns. These twelve towns came from the areas that belonged to Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

8 So the Israelites gave the Levites these towns and the fields around them, just as the Lord had told Moses.

9 These are the names of the towns that were in the areas that belonged to Judah and Simeon.

10 The first choice of towns was given to the Levites from the Kohath family group.

11 They gave them Kiriath Arba (This is Hebron. It was named for a man named Arba. Arba was the father of Anak.) They also gave them some land near the town for their animals.

12 But the fields and the small towns around the city of Kiriath Arba belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh.

13 So they gave the city of Hebron to Aaron's descendants. (Hebron was a city of safety.) They also gave Aaron's descendants the towns of Libnah,

14 Jattir, Eshtemoa,

15 Holon, Debir,

16 Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh. They also gave them some of the land near these towns for their animals. These two tribes gave them nine towns.

17 They also gave Aaron's descendants cities that belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. These cities were Gibeon, Geba,

18 Anathoth, and Almon. They gave them these four towns and some of the land near the towns for their animals.

19 In all, they gave 13 towns to the priests. (All priests were descendants of Aaron.) They also gave them some land near each town for their animals.

20 The other people from the Kohathite family groups were given towns that were in the areas that belonged to the tribe of Ephraim. They got these towns:

21 the city of Shechem from the hill country of Ephraim (which was a city of safety), Gezer,

22 Kibzaim, and Beth Horon. In all, Ephraim gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

23 The tribe of Dan gave them Eltekeh, Gibbethon,

24 Aijalon, and Gath Rimmon. In all, Dan gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

25 Half the tribe of Manasseh gave them Taanach and Gath Rimmon. In all, this half of Manasseh gave them two towns and some land around each town for their animals.

26 In all, the rest of the people from the Kohath family groups got ten towns and some land around each town for their animals.

27 The Gershon family groups were also from the tribe of Levi. They got these towns: Half the tribe of Manasseh gave them Golan in Bashan. (Golan was a city of safety.) Manasseh also gave them Be Eshtarah. In all, this half of Manasseh gave them two towns and some land around each town for their animals.

28 The tribe of Issachar gave them Kishion, Daberath,

29 Jarmuth, and En Gannim. In all, Issachar gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

30 The tribe of Asher gave them Mishal, Abdon,

31 Helkath, and Rehob. In all, Asher gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

32 The tribe of Naphtali gave them Kedesh in Galilee. (Kedesh was a city of safety.) Naphtali also gave them Hammoth Dor and Kartan. In all, Naphtali gave them three towns and some land around each town for their animals.

33 In all, the Gershon family groups got 13 towns and some land around each town for their animals.

34 The other Levite group was the Merari family group. They were given these towns: The tribe of Zebulun gave them Jokneam, Kartah, Dimnah, and Nahalal. In all, Zebulun gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals. The tribe of Reuben gave them Bezer, Jahaz, Kedemoth, and Mephaath. In all, Reuben gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals. The tribe of Gad gave them Ramoth in Gilead. (Ramoth was a city of safety.) They also gave them Mahanaim, Heshbon, and Jazer. In all, Gad gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

40 In all, the last family of Levites, the Merari family, got twelve towns.

41 So the Levites were given a total of 48 towns and some land around each town for their animals. All these towns were in areas that belonged to the other tribes.

42 Each of these towns had some land in it for their animals. That was true for every town.

43 So the Lord kept the promise that he had made to the Israelites and gave the people all the land that he had promised. The people took the land and lived there.

44 And the Lord allowed them to have peace on all sides of their land, just as he had promised their ancestors. None of their enemies defeated them. The Lord allowed the Israelites to defeat every enemy.

45 The Lord kept every promise that he made to the Israelites. There were no promises that he failed to keep. Every promise came true.

2 And they spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MP them at Shiloh ^H7887 in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Canaan ^H3667 ^LMS , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , The LORD ^H3068 ^EDS commanded ^H6680 ^VPQ3MS by the hand ^H3027 of Moses ^H4872 to give ^H5414 us cities ^H5892 ^GFP to dwell ^H3427 in , with the suburbs ^H4054 thereof for our cattle ^H929 .

3 And the children ^H1121 ^CMP of Israel ^H3478 gave ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MP unto the Levites ^H3881 out of their inheritance ^H5159 , at ^H413 ^PREP the commandment ^H6310 of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP cities ^H5892 and their suburbs ^H4054 .

4 And the lot ^H1486 ^D-NMS came out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS for the families ^H4940 of the Kohathites ^H6956 : and the children ^H1121 ^L-CMP of Aaron ^H175 the priest ^H3548 , which were of ^H4480 ^PREP the Levites ^H3881 , had ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS by lot ^H1486 out of the tribe ^H4294 of Judah ^H3063 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Simeon ^H8099 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Benjamin ^H1144 , thirteen ^H7969 ^BFS cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

5 And the rest ^H3498 of the children ^H1121 of Kohath ^H6955 had by lot ^H1486 out of the families ^H4940 of the tribe ^H4294 of Ephraim ^H669 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Dan ^H1835 , and out of the half ^H2677 tribe ^H4294 of Manasseh ^H4519 , ten ^H6235 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

6 And the children ^H1121 of Gershon ^H1648 had by lot ^H1486 out of the families ^H4940 of the tribe ^H4294 of Issachar ^H3485 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Asher ^H836 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Naphtali ^H5321 , and out of the half ^H2677 tribe ^H4294 of Manasseh ^H4519 in Bashan ^H1316 , thirteen ^H7969 ^BFS cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

7 The children ^H1121 ^L-CMP of Merari ^H4847 by their families ^H4940 ^L-CFP-3MP had out of the tribe ^H4294 of Reuben ^H7205 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Gad ^H1410 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of Zebulun ^H2074 , twelve ^H8147 ^MFS cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

8 And the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 gave ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MP by lot ^H1486 unto the Levites ^H3881 these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP cities ^H5892 with ^H854 their suburbs ^H4054 , as ^H834 ^K-RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS commanded ^H6680 ^VPQ3MS by the hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS of Moses ^H4872 .

9 And they gave ^H5414 out of the tribe ^H4294 of the children ^H1121 of Judah ^H3063 , and out of the tribe ^H4294 of the children ^H1121 of Simeon ^H8095 , these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP cities ^H5892 which ^H834 ^RPRO are here mentioned ^H7121 ^VQY3MS by name ^H8034 ,

10 Which the children ^H1121 ^L-CMP of Aaron ^H175 , being of the families ^H4940 of the Kohathites ^H6956 , who were of the children ^H1121 of Levi ^H3878 , had ^H1961 ^W-VPY3MS : for ^H3588 ^CONJ theirs was ^H1961 ^W-VPY3MS the first ^H7223 lot ^H1486 ^D-NMS .

11 And they gave ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MP them the city ^H7151 of Arba ^H704 the father ^H1 ^CMS-1MS of Anak ^H6061 , which ^H1931 ^PPRO-3FS city is Hebron ^H2275 , in the hill ^H2022 country of Judah ^H3063 , with ^H854 ^W-PART the suburbs ^H4054 thereof round about ^H5439 it .

12 But the fields ^H7704 ^CMS of the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS , and the villages ^H2691 thereof , gave ^H5414 they to Caleb ^H3612 the son ^H1121 of Jephunneh ^H3312 for his possession ^H272 .

13 Thus they gave ^H5414 to the children ^H1121 of Aaron ^H175 the priest ^H3548 Hebron ^H2275 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , to be a city ^H5892 ^GFS of refuge ^H4733 for the slayer ^H7523 ; and Libnah ^H3841 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

14 And Jattir ^H3492 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Eshtemoa ^H851 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

17 And out of the tribe ^H4294 of Benjamin ^H1144 , Gibeon ^H1391 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , Geba ^H1387 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

18 Anathoth ^H6068 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Almon ^H5960 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ; four ^H702 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

19 All ^H3605 ^NMS the cities ^H5892 of the children ^H1121 of Aaron ^H175 , the priests ^H3548 , were thirteen ^H7969 ^BFS cities ^H5892 ^GFP with their suburbs ^H4054 .

20 And the families ^H4940 of the children ^H1121 of Kohath ^H6955 , the Levites ^H3881 which remained ^H3498 of the children ^H1121 of Kohath ^H6955 , even they had ^H1961 ^W-VPY3MS the cities ^H5892 of their lot ^H1486 out of the tribe ^H4294 of Ephraim ^H669 .

21 For they gave ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MP them Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 in mount ^H2022 Ephraim ^H669 , to be a city ^H5892 ^GFS of refuge ^H4733 for the slayer ^H7523 ; and Gezer ^H1507 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

22 And Kibzaim ^H6911 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Beth ^H1032 - horon with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ; four ^H702 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

23 And out of the tribe ^H4294 of Dan ^H1835 , Eltekeh ^H514 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , Gibbethon ^H1405 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

26 All ^H3605 ^NMS the cities ^H5892 ^GFP were ten ^H6235 ^MFS with their suburbs ^H4054 for the families ^H4940 of the children ^H1121 of Kohath ^H6955 that remained ^H3498 .

27 And unto the children ^H1121 of Gershon ^H1648 , of the families ^H4940 of the Levites ^H3881 , out of the other half ^H2677 tribe ^H4294 of Manasseh ^H4519 they gave Golan ^H1474 in Bashan ^H1316 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , to be a city ^H5892 ^GFS of refuge ^H4733 for the slayer ^H7523 ; and Beesh ^H1203 - terah with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ; two ^H8147 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

32 And out of the tribe ^H4294 of Naphtali ^H5321 , Kedesh ^H6943 in Galilee ^H1551 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , to be a city ^H5892 ^GFS of refuge ^H4733 for the slayer ^H7523 ; and Hammoth ^H2576 - dor with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Kartan ^H7178 with her suburbs ^H4054 ; three ^H7969 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

33 All ^H3605 ^NMS the cities ^H5892 of the Gershonites ^H1649 according to their families ^H4940 ^L-CFP-3MP were thirteen ^H7969 ^BFS cities ^H5892 ^GFS with their suburbs ^H4054 .

34 And unto the families ^H4940 of the children ^H1121 of Merari ^H4847 , the rest ^H3498 of the Levites ^H3881 , out of the tribe ^H4294 of Zebulun ^H2074 , Jokneam ^H3362 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Kartah ^H7177 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

35 Dimnah ^H1829 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , Nahalal ^H5096 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ; four ^H702 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

36 And out of the tribe ^H4294 of Reuben ^H7205 , Bezer ^H1221 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Jahazah ^H3096 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

37 Kedemoth ^H6932 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , and Mephaath ^H4158 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ; four ^H702 cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

38 And out of the tribe ^H4294 of Gad ^H1410 , Ramoth ^H7216 in Gilead ^H1568 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , to be a city ^H5892 ^GFS of refuge ^H4733 for the slayer ^H7523 ; and Mahanaim ^H4266 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ,

39 Heshbon ^H2809 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 , Jazer ^H3270 with ^H854 her suburbs ^H4054 ; four ^H702 cities ^H5892 ^GFP in all ^H3605 ^NMS .

40 So all ^H3605 ^NMS the cities ^H5892 for the children ^H1121 ^L-CMP of Merari ^H4847 by their families ^H4940 ^L-CFP-3MP , which were remaining ^H3498 of the families ^H4940 of the Levites ^H3881 , were ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS by their lot ^H1486 twelve ^H8147 ^MFS cities ^H5892 ^GFP .

41 All ^H3605 ^NMS the cities ^H5892 of the Levites ^H3881 within ^H8432 ^B-NMS the possession ^H272 of the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 were forty ^H705 ^MMP and eight ^H8083 ^W-MFS cities ^H5892 ^GFP with their suburbs ^H4054 .

42 These ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP cities ^H5892 were ^H1961 every one ^H5892 ^GFS with their suburbs ^H4054 round about ^H5439 them : thus ^H3651 ^ADV were all ^H3605 ^L-CMS these ^H428 cities ^H5892 ^GFS .

43 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS gave ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS unto Israel ^H3478 all ^H3605 ^NMS the land ^H776 ^D-GFS which ^H834 ^RPRO he swore ^H7650 to give ^H5414 ^L-VQFC unto their fathers ^H1 ; and they possessed ^H3423 it , and dwelt ^H3427 ^W-VQY3MP therein .

44 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS gave them rest ^H5117 round about ^H5439 ^M-ADV , according to all ^H3605 ^NMS that ^H834 ^RPRO he swore ^H7650 unto their fathers ^H1 : and there stood ^H5975 not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR a man ^H376 ^NMS of all ^H3605 ^NMS their enemies ^H341 before ^H6440 them ; the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS delivered ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS all ^H3605 ^NMS their enemies ^H341 into their hand ^H3027 .

45 There failed ^H5307 not ^H3808 ^ADV aught ^H1697 ^VQPMS of any ^H3605 ^M-CMS good ^H2896 ^D-NMS thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS which ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS had spoken ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 ; all ^H3605 came to pass ^H935 .
