Jeremiah 36:1 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 The message from the Lord came to Jeremiah. This was during the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah. This was the message from the Lord:

2 "Jeremiah, get a scroll and write on it all the messages I have spoken to you. I have spoken to you about the nations of Israel and Judah and all the other nations. Write all the words that I have spoken to you from the time that Josiah was king, until now.

3 Maybe the people of Judah will hear what I am planning to do to them and will stop doing bad things. If they will do that, I will forgive them for the bad sins they have committed."

4 So Jeremiah called a man named Baruch son of Neriah. Jeremiah spoke the messages the Lord had given him. While he spoke, Baruch wrote the messages on the scroll.

5 Then Jeremiah said to Baruch, "I cannot go to the Lord's Temple. I am not allowed to go there.

6 So I want you to go to the Temple of the Lord. Go there on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll. Read to the people the messages from the Lord that you wrote on the scroll as I spoke them to you. Read them to all the people of Judah who come into Jerusalem from the towns where they live.

7 Perhaps they will ask the Lord to help them. Perhaps each person will stop doing bad things. The Lord has announced that he is very angry with them."

8 So Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do. Baruch read aloud the scroll that had the Lord's messages written on it. He read it in the Lord's Temple.

9 In the ninth month of the fifth year that Jehoiakim was king, a fast was announced. All those who lived in the city of Jerusalem and everyone who had come into Jerusalem from the towns of Judah were supposed to fast before the Lord.

10 At that time Baruch read the scroll that contained Jeremiah's words. He read the scroll in the Temple of the Lord to all the people who were there. Baruch was in the room of Gemariah in the upper courtyard when he read from the scroll. That room was located at the entrance of the New Gate of the Temple. Gemariah was the son of Shaphan. Gemariah was a scribe in the Temple.

11 A man named Micaiah heard all the messages from the Lord that Baruch read from the scroll. Micaiah was the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan.

12 When Micaiah heard the messages from the scroll, he went down to the secretary's room in the king's palace. All the royal officials were sitting there in the king's palace. These are the names of the officials: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Acbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah; all the other royal officials were there too.

13 Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll.

14 Then all the officials sent a man named Jehudi to Baruch. (Jehudi was the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Cushi.) Jehudi said to Baruch, "Bring the scroll that you read from and come with me." Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll and went with Jehudi to the officials.

15 Then the officials said to Baruch, "Sit down and read the scroll to us." So Baruch read the scroll to them.

16 When the royal officials heard all the messages from the scroll, they were afraid and looked at one another. They said to Baruch, "We must tell King Jehoiakim about these messages on the scroll."

17 Then the officials asked Baruch, "Tell us, Baruch, where did you get these messages that you wrote on the scroll? Did you write down what Jeremiah said to you?"

18 "Yes," Baruch answered. "Jeremiah spoke, and I wrote down all the messages with ink on this scroll."

19 Then the royal officials said to Baruch, "You and Jeremiah must go and hide. Don't tell anyone where you are hiding."

20 Then the royal officials put the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe. They went to King Jehoiakim and told him all about the scroll.

21 So King Jehoiakim sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought the scroll from the room of Elishama the scribe. Then Jehudi read the scroll to the king and all the servants who stood around the king.

22 The time this happened was in the ninth month, so King Jehoiakim was sitting in the part of the palace used for winter. There was a fire burning in a small fireplace in front of the king.

23 Jehudi began to read from the scroll. But after he would read two or three columns, King Jehoiakim would grab the scroll. Then he would cut those columns off the scroll with a small knife and throw them into the fireplace. Finally, the whole scroll was burned in the fire.

24 And, when King Jehoiakim and his servants heard the message from the scroll, they were not afraid. They did not tear their clothes to show sorrow for doing wrong.

25 Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah tried to talk King Jehoiakim out of burning the scroll, but he would not listen to them.

26 Instead King Jehoiakim commanded some men to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. These men were Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel. But they could not find Baruch and Jeremiah, because the Lord had hidden them.

27 The message from the Lord came to Jeremiah. This happened after King Jehoiakim burned the scroll that had contained all the messages from the Lord. Jeremiah had spoken to Baruch, and Baruch had written them on the scroll. This was the message from the Lord that came to Jeremiah:

28 "Get another scroll. Write all the messages on it that were on the first scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned.

29 Also tell King Jehoiakim of Judah that this is what the Lord says: 'Jehoiakim, you burned that scroll. You said, "Why did Jeremiah write that the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and kill all the people and animals in it?"

30 So this is what the Lord says about King Jehoiakim of Judah: Jehoiakim's descendants will not sit on David's throne. When Jehoiakim dies, he will not get a king's funeral, but his body will be thrown out on the ground. His body will be left out in the heat of the day and the cold frost of the night.

31 I, the Lord, will punish Jehoiakim and his children, and I will punish his officials. I will do this because they are wicked. I have promised to bring terrible disasters on them and on all those who live in Jerusalem and on the people from Judah. I will bring all the bad things on them, just as I promised, because they have not listened to me.'"

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah, the scribe. As Jeremiah spoke, Baruch wrote on the scroll the same messages that were on the scroll that King Jehoiakim had burned in the fire. And many other words like those messages were added to the second scroll.

3 It may be that ^H194 ^ADV the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Judah ^H3063 will hear ^H8085 ^VQY3MP all ^H3605 ^NMS the evil ^H7451 ^D-AFS which ^H834 ^RPRO I ^H595 ^PPRO-1MS purpose ^H2803 to do ^H6213 ^L-VQFC unto them ; that ^H4616 ^L-CONJ they may return ^H7725 every man ^H376 ^NMS from his evil ^H7451 ^D-AFS way ^H1870 ^M-CMS-3MS ; that I may forgive ^H5545 their iniquity ^H5771 and their sin ^H2403 .

4 Then Jeremiah ^H3414 called ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS Baruch ^H1263 the son ^H1121 of Neriah ^H5374 : and Baruch ^H1263 wrote ^H3789 from the mouth ^H6310 ^M-CMS of Jeremiah ^H3414 all ^H3605 ^NMS the words ^H1697 ^CMP of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , which ^H834 ^RPRO he had spoken ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , upon ^H5921 ^PREP a roll ^H4039 of a book ^H5612 .

5 And Jeremiah ^H3414 commanded ^H6680 Baruch ^H1263 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am shut up ^H6113 ; I cannot ^H3201 go ^H935 ^L-VQFC into the house ^H1004 ^CMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS :

6 Therefore go ^H935 ^W-VQQ2MS thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS , and read ^H7121 in the roll ^H4039 , which ^H834 ^RPRO thou hast written ^H3789 from my mouth ^H6310 ^M-CMS , the words ^H1697 ^CMP of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS in the ears ^H241 of the people ^H5971 in the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS upon the fasting ^H6685 ^NMS day ^H3117 ^B-NMS : and also ^H1571 ^W-CONJ thou shalt read ^H7121 them in the ears ^H241 of all ^H3605 ^CMS Judah ^H3063 that come ^H935 out of their cities ^H5892 .

7 It may be ^H194 ^ADV they will present ^H5307 their supplication ^H8467 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and will return ^H7725 ^W-VUY3MP every one ^H376 ^NMS from his evil ^H7451 ^D-AFS way ^H1870 ^M-CMS-3MS : for ^H3588 ^CONJ great ^H1419 is the anger ^H639 and the fury ^H2534 that ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS hath pronounced ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS against ^H413 ^PREP this ^H2088 ^D-PMS people ^H5971 .

8 And Baruch ^H1263 the son ^H1121 of Neriah ^H5374 did ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MS according to all ^H3605 ^K-NMS that ^H834 ^RPRO Jeremiah ^H3414 the prophet ^H5030 commanded ^H6680 ^VPQ3MS-3MS him , reading ^H7121 in the book ^H5612 the words ^H1697 ^CMP of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS in the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS .

9 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS in the fifth ^H2549 year ^H8141 of Jehoiakim ^H3079 the son ^H1121 of Josiah ^H2977 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Judah ^H3063 , in the ninth ^H8671 month ^H2320 ^BD-NMS , that they proclaimed ^H7121 a fast ^H6685 ^NMS before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS to all ^H3605 ^NMS the people ^H5971 in Jerusalem ^H3389 , and to all ^H3605 ^NMS the people ^H5971 that came ^H935 from the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 unto Jerusalem ^H3389 .

10 Then read ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS Baruch ^H1263 in the book ^H5612 ^BD-NMS the words ^H1697 ^CMP of Jeremiah ^H3414 in the house ^H1004 ^CMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , in the chamber ^H3957 of Gemariah ^H1587 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Shaphan ^H8227 the scribe ^H5608 , in the higher ^H5945 court ^H2691 , at the entry ^H6607 ^CMS of the new ^H2319 gate ^H8179 ^NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS , in the ears ^H241 of all ^H3605 ^NMS the people ^H5971 ^D-NMS .

11 When Michaiah ^H4321 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Gemariah ^H1587 , the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Shaphan ^H8227 , had heard ^H8085 out of ^M-PREP the book ^H5612 all ^H3605 ^NMS the words ^H1697 ^CMP of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS ,

12 Then he went down ^H3381 ^W-VQY3MS into ^H5921 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS , into ^H5921 ^PREP the scribe ^H5608 \'s chamber ^H3957 : and , lo ^H2009 ^IJEC , all ^H3605 ^NMS the princes ^H8269 sat ^H3427 there ^H8033 ^ADV , even Elishama ^H476 the scribe ^H5608 , and Delaiah ^H1806 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Shemaiah ^H8098 , and Elnathan ^H494 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Achbor ^H5907 , and Gemariah ^H1587 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Shaphan ^H8227 , and Zedekiah ^H6667 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Hananiah ^H2608 , and all ^H3605 ^NMS the princes ^H8269 .

13 Then Michaiah ^H4321 declared ^H5046 ^W-VHY3MS unto them all ^H3605 ^NMS the words ^H1697 ^AMP that ^H834 ^RPRO he had heard ^H8085 , when Baruch ^H1263 read ^H7121 the book ^H5612 ^BD-NMS in the ears ^H241 of the people ^H5971 ^D-NMS .

14 Therefore all ^H3605 ^CMS the princes ^H8269 sent ^H7971 Jehudi ^H3065 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Nethaniah ^H5418 , the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Shelemiah ^H8018 , the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Cushi ^H3570 , unto ^H413 ^PREP Baruch ^H1263 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Take ^H3947 in thine hand ^H3027 the roll ^H4039 wherein ^H834 ^RPRO thou hast read ^H7121 in the ears ^H241 of the people ^H5971 , and come ^H1980 . So Baruch ^H1263 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Neriah ^H5374 took ^H3947 ^W-VQY3MS the roll ^H4039 in his hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS-3MS , and came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP them .

15 And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Sit down ^H3427 now ^H4994 ^IJEC , and read ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS it in our ears ^H241 ^B-CFS-1MP . So Baruch ^H1263 read ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS it in their ears ^H241 .

16 Now it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , when they had heard ^H8085 all ^H3605 ^NMS the words ^H1697 ^AMP , they were afraid ^H6342 both ^H413 ^PREP one ^H376 ^NMS and other ^H7453 ^NMS-3MS , and said ^H559 unto ^H413 ^PREP Baruch ^H1263 , We will surely tell ^H5046 the king ^H4428 of all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 words ^H1697 ^AMP .

17 And they asked ^H7592 Baruch ^H1263 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Tell ^H5046 us now ^H4994 ^IJEC , How ^H349 didst thou write ^H3789 all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP words ^H1697 ^AMP at his mouth ^H6310 ?

18 Then Baruch ^H1263 answered ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS them , He pronounced ^H7121 ^VQY3MS all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP words ^H1697 ^AMP unto ^H413 ^PREP-1MS me with his mouth ^H6310 ^M-CMS-3MS , and I ^H589 ^W-PPRO-1MS wrote ^H3789 them with ink ^H1773 in ^H5921 ^PREP the book ^H5612 .

19 Then said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP the princes ^H8269 unto ^H413 ^PREP Baruch ^H1263 , Go ^H1980 ^VQI2MS , hide ^H5641 thee , thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS and Jeremiah ^H3414 ; and let no ^H408 ^NPAR man ^H376 ^W-NMS know ^H3045 where ^H375 ^IGAT ye be .

20 And they went in ^H935 ^W-VQY3MP to ^H413 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS into the court ^H2691 , but they laid up ^H6485 the roll ^H4039 in the chamber ^H3957 of Elishama ^H476 the scribe ^H5608 , and told ^H5046 all ^H3605 ^NMS the words ^H1697 in the ears ^H241 of the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS .

21 So the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS Jehudi ^H3065 to fetch ^H3947 ^L-VQFC the roll ^H4039 : and he took ^H3947 ^W-VQY3MS it out of Elishama ^H476 the scribe ^H5608 \'s chamber ^H3957 . And Jehudi ^H3065 read ^H7121 it in the ears ^H241 of the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS , and in the ears ^H241 of all ^H3605 ^NMS the princes ^H8269 which stood ^H5975 beside ^H5921 ^M-PREP the king ^H4428 .

22 Now the king ^H4428 sat ^H3427 ^VQPMS in the winterhouse ^H1004 ^CMS in the ninth ^H8671 month ^H2320 ^BD-NMS : and there was a fire on the hearth ^H254 burning ^H1197 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP-3MS him .

23 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , that when Jehudi ^H3065 had read ^H7121 three ^H7969 ^MFS or four ^H702 leaves ^H1817 , he cut ^H7167 it with the penknife ^H8593 , and cast ^H7993 it into ^H413 ^PREP the fire ^H784 that ^H834 ^RPRO was on ^H413 ^PREP the hearth ^H254 , until ^H5704 ^PREP all ^H3605 ^NMS the roll ^H4039 was consumed ^H8552 in ^H5921 ^PREP the fire ^H784 that ^H834 ^RPRO was on ^H5921 ^PREP the hearth ^H254 .

24 Yet they were not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR afraid ^H6342 , nor ^H3808 ^W-NPAR rent ^H7167 their garments ^H899 , neither the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS , nor any ^H3605 ^NMS of his servants ^H5650 that heard ^H8085 all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 words ^H1697 ^AMP .

25 Nevertheless ^H1571 ^W-CONJ Elnathan ^H494 and Delaiah ^H1806 and Gemariah ^H1587 had made intercession ^H6293 to the king ^H4428 that he would not ^H1115 ^L-NPAR burn ^H8313 the roll ^H4039 : but he would not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR hear ^H8085 them .

26 But the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS commanded ^H6680 Jerahmeel ^H3396 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Hammelech ^H4429 , and Seraiah ^H8304 the son ^H1121 of Azriel ^H5837 , and Shelemiah ^H8018 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Abdeel ^H5655 , to take ^H3947 ^L-VQFC Baruch ^H1263 the scribe ^H5608 and Jeremiah ^H3414 the prophet ^H5030 : but the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS hid ^H5641 them .

27 Then the word ^H1697 ^NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS came ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP Jeremiah ^H3414 , after that ^H310 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS had burned ^H8313 the roll ^H4039 , and the words ^H1697 ^AMP which ^H834 ^RPRO Baruch ^H1263 wrote ^H3789 ^CMS at the mouth ^H6310 ^M-CMS of Jeremiah ^H3414 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC ,

28 Take ^H3947 ^VQI2MS thee again ^H7725 ^VQFC another ^H312 roll ^H4039 , and write ^H3789 in ^H5921 ^PREP it all ^H3605 ^NMS the former ^H7223 words ^H1697 ^AMP that ^H834 ^RPRO were ^H1961 ^VQQ3MP in ^H5921 ^PREP the first ^H7223 roll ^H4039 , which ^H834 ^RPRO Jehoiakim ^H3079 the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Judah ^H3063 hath burned ^H8313 .

29 And thou shalt say ^H559 to ^H5921 ^W-PREP Jehoiakim ^H3079 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Judah ^H3063 , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS ; Thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS hast burned ^H8313 this ^H2063 ^D-DFS roll ^H4039 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Why ^H4069 ^IPRO hast thou written ^H3789 therein ^H5921 ^PREP-3FS , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , The king ^H4428 ^NMS of Babylon ^H894 ^LFS shall certainly come ^H935 ^VQI2MS and destroy ^H7843 this ^H2063 ^D-DFS land ^H776 ^D-GFS , and shall cause to cease ^H7673 from ^H4480 ^M-PREP-3FS thence man ^H120 ^NMS and beast ^H929 ?

30 Therefore ^H3651 ^L-ADV thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS of ^H5921 ^PREP Jehoiakim ^H3079 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Judah ^H3063 ; He shall have ^H1961 ^VQY3MS none ^H3808 ^NADV to sit ^H3427 ^VQPMS upon ^H5921 ^PREP the throne ^H3678 of David ^H1732 : and his dead body ^H5038 shall be ^H1961 ^VQY2MS cast out ^H7993 in the day ^H3117 ^B-AMS to the heat ^H2721 , and in the night ^H3915 ^BD-NMS to the frost ^H7140 .

31 And I will punish ^H6485 him and his seed ^H2233 ^NMS-3MS and his servants ^H5650 for their iniquity ^H5771 ; and I will bring ^H935 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MS them , and upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MS the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 , and upon ^H413 ^W-PREP the men ^H376 ^NMS of Judah ^H3063 , all ^H3605 ^NMS the evil ^H7451 ^D-AFS that ^H834 ^RPRO I have pronounced ^H1696 ^VPQ1MS against ^H413 ^PREP-3MP them ; but they hearkened ^H8085 not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR .

32 Then took ^H3947 ^VQQ3MS Jeremiah ^H3414 another ^H312 roll ^H4039 , and gave ^H5414 it to ^H413 ^PREP Baruch ^H1263 the scribe ^H5608 , the son ^H1121 of Neriah ^H5374 ; who wrote ^H3789 therein ^H5921 ^PREP-3FS from the mouth ^H6310 ^M-CMS of Jeremiah ^H3414 all ^H3605 ^NMS the words ^H1697 ^CMP of the book ^H5612 which ^H834 ^RPRO Jehoiakim ^H3079 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Judah ^H3063 had burned ^H8313 in the fire ^H784 : and there were added ^H3254 besides ^H5750 ^W-ADV unto ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them many ^H7227 ^AMP like ^H1992 words ^H1697 ^NMP .
