2 Kings 17:18 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Hoshea son of Elah began to rule in Samaria over Israel. This was during the 12 year that Ahaz was king of Judah. Hoshea ruled nine years.

2 He did what the Lord said was wrong, but he was not as bad as the kings of Israel who had ruled before him.

3 King Shalmaneser of Assyria came to fight against Hoshea and defeated him. So Hoshea paid tribute to Shalmaneser.

4 Later, Hoshea sent messengers to the king of Egypt to ask for help. That king's name was So. That year Hoshea did not pay tribute to the king of Assyria as he did every other year. The king of Assyria learned that Hoshea had made plans against him. So he arrested Hoshea and put him in jail.

5 The king of Assyria attacked many places in Israel. Then he came to Samaria and fought against it for three years.

6 The king of Assyria took Samaria during the ninth year that Hoshea was king of Israel. He captured many Israelites and took them as prisoners to Assyria. He made them live in Halah by the Habor River at Gozan and in other cities of the Medes.

7 These things happened because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God. And it was the Lord who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt! He saved them from the power of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. But the Israelites began worshiping other gods.

8 They began doing the same things that other people did. And the Lord had forced those people to leave their land when the Israelites came. The Israelites also chose to be ruled by kings.

9 The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God, and those things were wrong! The Israelites built high places in all their cities—from the smallest town to the largest city.

10 They put up memorial stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

11 They burned incense there in all those places for worship. They did these things like the nations that the Lord forced out of the land before them. The Israelites did evil things that made the Lord angry.

12 They served idols, and the Lord had said to them, "You must not do this."

13 The Lord used every prophet and every seer to warn Israel and Judah. He said, "Turn away from the evil things you do. Obey my commands and laws. Follow all the law that I gave to your ancestors. I used my servants the prophets to give this law to you."

14 But the people would not listen. They were very stubborn like their ancestors. Their ancestors did not believe the Lord their God.

15 They refused the Lord's laws and the agreement that he made with their ancestors. They refused to listen to the Lord's warnings. They worshiped idols that were worth nothing and they themselves became worth nothing. They lived like the people in the nations around them. They did those bad things. And the Lord had warned the Israelites. The Lord told them not to do those bad things.

16 The people stopped following the commands of the Lord their God. They made two gold statues of calves. They made Asherah poles. They worshiped all the stars of heaven and served Baal.

17 They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They used magic and witchcraft to try to learn the future. They sold themselves to do what the Lord said was evil. They did this to make the Lord angry.

18 So the Lord became very angry with Israel and removed them from his sight. There were no Israelites left, except the tribe of Judah.

19 But even the people of Judah did not obey the commands of the Lord their God. They lived just as the Israelites had.

20 The Lord rejected all the Israelites. He brought them many troubles. He let people destroy them. Finally he threw them away and removed them from his sight.

21 The Lord tore them from the family of David, and they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king. Jeroboam pulled the Israelites away from following the Lord. He caused them to commit a great sin.

22 So the Israelites sinned in all the ways Jeroboam did. And they did not stop committing these sins

23 until the Lord took Israel away from his sight. And he said this would happen. He sent his prophets to tell the people this would happen. So the Israelites were taken out of their country into Assyria, and they have been there to this day.

24 The king of Assyria took the Israelites out of Samaria and brought in other people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim. They took over Samaria and lived in the cities around it.

25 When these people began to live in Samaria, they did not honor the Lord, so the Lord sent lions to attack them. The lions killed some of them.

26 Some people said to the king of Assyria, "The people who you took away and put in the cities of Samaria don't know the law of the god of that country. So that god sent lions to attack them. The lions killed them because they don't know the law of the god of that country."

27 So the king of Assyria gave this command: "You took some priests from Samaria. Send one of them who I captured back to Samaria. Let that priest go and live there. Then he can teach the people the law of the god of that country."

28 So one of the priests who the Assyrians had carried away from Samaria came to live in Bethel. He taught the people how they should honor the Lord.

29 But all those people made gods of their own. They put them in the temples at the high places that the people of Samaria had made. They did this wherever they lived.

30 The people of Babylon made the false god Succoth Benoth. The people of Cuthah made the false god Nergal. The people of Hamath made the false god Ashima.

31 The people of Avva made the false gods Nibhaz and Tartak. The people from Sepharvaim also burned their children in the fire to honor their false gods, Adrammelech and Anammelech.

32 But they also worshiped the Lord. They chose priests for the high places from among the people. These priests made sacrifices for the people in the temples at those places of worship.

33 They respected the Lord but also served their own gods, just as they did in their own countries.

34 Even today they live like they did in the past. They don't honor the Lord. They don't obey the rules and commands of the Israelites. They don't obey the law or the commands that the Lord gave to the children of Jacob.

35 The Lord made an agreement with the Israelites. The Lord commanded them, "You must not honor other gods. You must not worship or serve them or offer sacrifices to them.

36 But you must follow the Lord. He is the God who brought you out of Egypt. He used his great power to save you. You must worship the Lord and make sacrifices to him.

37 You must obey the rules, laws, teachings, and commands that he wrote for you. You must obey these things all the time. You must not respect other gods.

38 You must not forget the agreement that I made with you. You must not respect other gods.

39 No, you must respect only the Lord your God. Then he will save you from all your enemies."

40 But the Israelites did not listen. They kept on doing the same things they did before.

41 So now those other nations respected the Lord, but they also served their own idols. Their children and grandchildren did the same thing their ancestors did. They still do these things to this day.

3 Against ^H5921 ^PREP-3MS him came up ^H5927 Shalmaneser ^H8022 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS ; and Hoshea ^H1954 became ^H1961 ^W-VPY3MS his servant ^H5650 ^NMS , and gave ^H7725 ^W-VHY3MS him presents ^H4503 .

4 And the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS found ^H4672 ^W-VQY3MS conspiracy ^H7195 in Hoshea ^H1954 : for he had sent ^H7971 ^VQQ3MS messengers ^H4397 to ^H413 ^PREP So ^H5471 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS , and brought ^H5927 no ^H3808 ^W-NPAR present ^H4503 ^NFS to the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS , as he had done year ^H8141 by year ^H8141 : therefore the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS shut him up ^H6113 , and bound ^H631 him in prison ^H1004 ^CMS .

8 And walked ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP in the statutes ^H2708 of the heathen ^H1471 ^D-NMP , whom ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS cast out ^H3423 from before ^H6440 ^M-CMP the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 , and of the kings ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478 , which ^H834 ^RPRO they had made ^H6213 .

9 And the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 did secretly ^H2644 those things ^H1697 ^NMP that ^H834 ^RPRO were not ^H3808 ^NADV right ^H3651 ^ADV against ^H5921 ^PREP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS their God ^H430 , and they built ^H1129 them high places ^H1116 in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS their cities ^H5892 , from the tower ^H4026 of the watchmen ^H5341 to ^H5704 ^PREP the fenced ^H4013 city ^H5892 ^GFS .

10 And they set them up ^H5324 images ^H4676 and groves ^H842 in ^H5921 ^PREP every ^H3605 ^NMS high ^H1364 hill ^H1389 , and under ^H8478 every ^H3605 ^NMS green ^H7488 tree ^H6086 ^NMS :

11 And there ^H8033 ^ADV they burnt incense ^H6999 in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the high places ^H1116 , as did the heathen ^H1471 whom ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS carried away ^H1540 before ^H6440 ^M-CMP-3MP them ; and wrought ^H6213 ^W-EMS wicked ^H7451 ^AMP things ^H1697 ^NMP to provoke ^H3707 the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS to anger :

12 For they served ^H5647 idols ^H1544 , whereof ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS had said ^H559 ^VQQ3MS unto them , Ye shall not ^H3808 ^NADV do ^H6213 this ^H2088 ^D-PMS thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS .

13 Yet the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS testified ^H5749 against Israel ^H3478 , and against Judah ^H3063 , by ^H3027 ^B-CFS all ^H3605 ^NMS the prophets ^H5030 , and by all ^H3605 ^NMS the seers ^H2374 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Turn ^H7725 ye from your evil ways ^H1870 , and keep ^H8104 my commandments ^H4687 and my statutes ^H2708 , according to all ^H3605 ^NMS the law ^H8451 which ^H834 ^RPRO I commanded ^H6680 your fathers ^H1 , and which ^H834 ^RPRO I sent ^H7971 to ^H413 you by ^H3027 ^B-CFS my servants ^H5650 the prophets ^H5030 .

14 Notwithstanding they would not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR hear ^H8085 , but hardened ^H7185 their necks ^H6203 , like to the neck ^H6203 of their fathers ^H1 ^CMP-3MP , that ^H834 ^RPRO did not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR believe ^H539 in the LORD ^H3068 their God ^H430 .

15 And they rejected ^H3988 his statutes ^H2706 , and his covenant ^H1285 that ^H834 ^RPRO he made ^H3772 with ^H854 ^PREP their fathers ^H1 ^CMP-3MP , and his testimonies ^H5715 which ^H834 ^RPRO he testified ^H5749 against them ; and they followed ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP vanity ^H1892 , and became vain ^H1891 , and went after ^H310 ^PREP the heathen ^H1471 ^D-NMP that ^H834 ^RPRO were round about ^H5439 them , concerning whom ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS had charged ^H6680 ^VPQ3MS them , that they should not ^H1115 ^L-NPAR do ^H6213 ^VQFC like them .

16 And they left ^H5800 all ^H3605 ^NMS the commandments ^H4687 of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS their God ^H430 , and made ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MP them molten images ^H4541 , even two ^H8147 calves ^H5695 , and made ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MP a grove ^H842 , and worshiped ^H7812 all ^H3605 ^NMS the host ^H6635 of heaven ^H8064 ^D-NMD , and served ^H5647 Baal ^H1168 .

17 And they caused their sons ^H1121 and their daughters ^H1323 to pass through ^H5674 the fire ^H784 , and used ^H7080 divination ^H7081 and enchantments ^H5172 , and sold themselves ^H4376 to do ^H6213 ^L-VQFC evil ^H7451 in the sight ^H5869 ^B-CMP of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , to provoke him to anger ^H3707 .

18 Therefore the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS was very angry ^H599 with Israel ^H3478 , and removed ^H5493 them out of ^M-PREP his sight ^H6440 ^CMP-3MS : there was none ^H3808 ^NADV left ^H7604 ^VNQ3MS but ^H7535 ^ADV the tribe ^H7626 ^CMS of Judah ^H3063 only ^H905 .

19 Also ^H1571 ^CONJ Judah ^H3063 kept ^H8104 not ^H3808 ^NADV the commandments ^H4687 of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS their God ^H430 , but walked ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP in the statutes ^H2708 of Israel ^H3478 which ^H834 ^RPRO they made ^H6213 .

20 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS rejected ^H3988 all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the seed ^H2233 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 , and afflicted ^H6031 them , and delivered ^H5414 them into the hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS of spoilers ^H8154 , until ^H5704 ^PREP he had cast them out ^H7993 of his sight ^H6440 .

21 For ^H3588 ^CONJ he rent ^H7167 Israel ^H3478 from ^M-PREP the house ^H1004 ^CMS of David ^H1732 ^MMS ; and they made Jeroboam ^H3379 the son ^H1121 of Nebat ^H5028 king ^H4427 : and Jeroboam ^H3379 drove ^H5080 Israel ^H3478 from following ^H310 the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and made them sin ^H2398 a great ^H1419 ^AFS sin ^H2401 .

22 For the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 walked ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the sins ^H2403 of Jeroboam ^H3379 which ^H834 ^RPRO he did ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS ; they departed ^H5493 ^VQQ3MP not ^H3808 ^NADV from ^H4480 ^PREP-3FS them ;

23 Until ^H5704 ^PREP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS removed ^H5493 ^VHQ3MS Israel ^H3478 out of ^M-PREP his sight ^H6440 ^CMP-3MS , as ^H834 ^RPRO he had said ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS by ^H3027 ^B-CFS all ^H3605 ^NMS his servants ^H5650 the prophets ^H5030 . So was Israel ^H3478 carried away ^H1540 ^W-VQY3MS out of ^M-PREP their own land ^H127 to Assyria ^H804 unto ^H5704 ^PREP this ^H2088 ^D-PMS day ^H3117 ^D-AMS .

24 And the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS brought ^H935 ^W-VHY3MS men from Babylon ^H894 , and from Cuthah ^H3575 , and from Ava ^H5755 , and from Hamath ^H2574 , and from Sepharvaim ^H5617 , and placed ^H3427 them in the cities ^H5892 ^B-CFP of Samaria ^H8111 instead ^H8478 ^NMS of the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 : and they possessed ^H3423 Samaria ^H8111 , and dwelt ^H3427 in the cities ^H5892 thereof .

25 And so it was ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS at the beginning ^H8462 of their dwelling ^H3427 there ^H8033 ^ADV , that they feared ^H3372 not ^H3808 ^NADV the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS : therefore the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS sent ^H7971 ^W-VPY3MS lions ^H738 among them , which slew ^H2026 some of them .

26 Wherefore they spoke ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP to the king ^H4428 ^L-CMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , The nations ^H1471 ^D-NMP which ^H834 ^RPRO thou hast removed ^H1540 , and placed ^H3427 in the cities ^H5892 ^B-CFP of Samaria ^H8111 , know ^H3045 not ^H3808 ^NADV the manner ^H4941 ^CMS of the God ^H430 ^CDP of the land ^H776 ^D-GFS : therefore he hath sent ^H7971 ^W-VPY3MS lions ^H738 among them , and , behold ^H2009 , they slay ^H4191 them , because ^H834 ^RPRO they know ^H3045 not ^H369 the manner ^H4941 ^CMS of the God ^H430 ^CDP of the land ^H776 ^D-GFS .

27 Then the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Assyria ^H804 ^GFS commanded ^H6680 ^W-VPY3MS , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Carry ^H1980 thither ^H8033 ^ADV-3FS one ^H259 ^MMS of the priests ^H3548 whom ^H834 ^RPRO ye brought ^H1540 from thence ^H8033 ^M-ADV ; and let them go ^H1980 and dwell ^H3427 there ^H8033 ^ADV , and let him teach ^H3384 them the manner ^H4941 ^CMS of the God ^H430 ^CDP of the land ^H776 ^D-GFS .

28 Then one ^H259 ^MMS of the priests ^H3548 whom ^H834 ^RPRO they had carried away ^H1540 from Samaria ^H8111 came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS and dwelt ^H3427 ^W-VQY3MS in Bethel ^H1008 , and taught ^H3384 them how ^H349 they should fear ^H3372 the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

29 Howbeit every nation ^H1471 ^NMS made ^H6213 gods ^H430 ^CMP-3MS of their own , and put ^H5117 them in the houses ^H1004 ^B-CMS of the high places ^H1116 which ^H834 ^RPRO the Samaritans ^H8118 had made ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP , every nation ^H1471 ^NMS in their cities ^H5892 wherein ^H834 ^RPRO they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP dwelt ^H3427 .

30 And the men ^H376 ^W-CMP of Babylon ^H894 made ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP Succothbenoth ^H5524 , and the men ^H376 ^W-CMP of Cuth ^H3575 made ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP Nergal ^H5370 , and the men ^H376 ^W-CMP of Hamath ^H2574 made ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP Ashima ^H807 ,

31 And the Avites ^H5761 made ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP Nibhaz ^H5026 and Tartak ^H8662 , and the Sepharvites ^H5617 burnt ^H8313 their children ^H1121 in fire ^H784 to Adrammelech ^H152 and Anammelech ^H6048 , the gods ^H430 of Sepharvaim ^H5617 .

32 So they feared ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and made ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MP unto themselves of the lowest ^H7098 of them priests ^H3548 of the high places ^H1116 , which sacrificed ^H6213 for them in the houses ^H1004 ^B-CMS of the high places ^H1116 .

33 They feared ^H1961 ^VQQ3MP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and served ^H1961 ^VQQ3MP their own gods ^H430 , after the manner ^H4941 of the nations ^H1471 ^D-NMP whom ^H834 ^RPRO they carried away ^H1540 from thence ^H8033 ^M-ADV .

34 Unto ^H5704 ^PREP this ^H2088 ^D-PMS day ^H3117 ^D-AMS they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP do ^H6213 after the former ^H7223 manners ^H4941 : they fear ^H3372 not ^H369 the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , neither ^H369 do ^H6213 they after their statutes ^H2708 , or after their ordinances ^H4941 , or after the law ^H8451 and commandment ^H4687 which ^H834 ^RPRO the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS commanded ^H6680 ^VPQ3MS the children ^H1121 of Jacob ^H3290 , whom ^H834 ^RPRO he named ^H7760 ^VQQ3MS Israel ^H3478 ^LMS ;

35 With ^H854 ^PREP-3MP whom the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS had made ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 ^NFS , and charged ^H6680 them , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Ye shall not ^H3808 ^NADV fear ^H3372 other ^H312 ^AMP gods ^H430 ^EDP , nor ^H3808 ^W-NADV bow yourselves ^H7812 to them , nor ^H3808 ^W-NADV serve ^H5647 them , nor ^H3808 ^W-NADV sacrifice ^H2076 to them :

36 But ^H518 ^PART the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , who ^H834 ^RPRO brought you up ^H5927 out of the land ^H776 ^M-NFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS with great ^H1419 ^AMS power ^H3581 ^B-NMS and a stretched out ^H5186 arm ^H2220 , him shall ye fear ^H3372 , and him shall ye worship ^H7812 , and to him shall ye do sacrifice ^H2076 .

37 And the statutes ^H2706 , and the ordinances ^H4941 , and the law ^H8451 , and the commandment ^H4687 , which ^H834 ^RPRO he wrote ^H3789 ^CMS for you , ye shall observe ^H8104 to do ^H6213 ^L-VQFC forevermore ^H3117 ^D-NMP ; and ye shall not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR fear ^H3372 other ^H312 gods ^H430 ^EDP .

38 And the covenant ^H1285 that ^H834 ^RPRO I have made ^H3772 ^VQQ1MS with ^H854 ^PART-2MP you ye shall not ^H3808 ^NADV forget ^H7911 ; neither ^H3808 ^W-NADV shall ye fear ^H3372 other ^H312 gods ^H430 ^EDP .

39 But ^H518 ^PART the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS your God ^H430 ye shall fear ^H3372 ; and he ^H1931 ^W-PPRO-3MS shall deliver ^H5337 you out of the hand ^H3027 ^M-GFS of all ^H3605 ^NMS your enemies ^H341 .

40 Howbeit they did not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR hearken ^H8085 , but ^H518 ^PART they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP did ^H6213 after their former ^H7223 manner ^H4941 .

41 So these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP nations ^H1471 ^D-NMP feared ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and served ^H5647 their graven images ^H6456 , both ^H1571 ^CONJ their children ^H1121 , and their children ^H1121 ^W-CMP \'s children ^H1121 ^CMP-3MP : as ^H834 ^K-RPRO did ^H6213 ^VQQ3MP their fathers ^H1 , so do ^H6213 they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP unto ^H5704 ^PREP this ^H2088 ^D-PMS day ^H3117 ^D-AMS .
